Chapter 38: Chapter 38: Battle of wills

The world didn’t go dark.

It went red.

Jason’s fingers were still on the shell when his mind tore loose from his body, consciousness dragged down through something that felt less like falling and more like drowning in warm, molten light.

His last physical thought was purely instinct, not strategy.

He hurled his spear sideways, blind, toward the nearest coiled shape in the darkness behind him.

Thunk.

A low, furious hiss answered, one of the sleeping wyrms jerking awake, and somewhere beyond that, faint and distant, he heard Kane’s voice snap out a curse.

Then his body stopped being his problem.

---

He stood in a place that had no floor, no sky, only a vast, churning sea of gold and crimson light stretching in every direction, his own essence given shape and weight around him.

And across that sea, something vast opened a single burning eye.

*MINE.*

The word wasn’t spoken. It simply existed, pressed directly into his skull.

The dragon’s presence surged forward, not a creature so much as an instinct given form, ancient and starving, reaching not for his mind but for the bloodline threaded through every part of him.

Jason felt it the moment the pull turned into a grip.

Fire tore through his chest, not the comfortable warmth of his own affinity but something older, hungrier, trying to unravel the Azure Dragon’s essence out of his veins one strand at a time.

’It’s trying to eat me.’

He understood, with sudden, horrifying clarity, exactly what would happen if it succeeded.

The bloodline wasn’t separate from him anymore. It hadn’t been for a long time. Ripping it free wouldn’t just weaken him.

It would kill him.

---

He fought back the only way he knew how.

Essence flooded outward from his own Core, Fire and Lightning both, slamming against the golden tide like a wall thrown up against a flood.

It wasn’t enough.

The tide simply flowed around him, patient, endless, grinding down his defenses one wave at a time, and Jason felt pieces of himself starting to blur at the edges, thoughts scattering like smoke.

*SUBMIT.*

’No.’

He planted himself, essence roaring, and screamed the word back with everything he had left.

"No!"

The tide didn’t care.

It surged again, heavier, and this time it found purchase, dragging at something fundamental, something that felt like his own name starting to slip through his fingers.

Panic clawed up his throat.

Then, underneath the panic, something steadier surfaced.

Novaria’s face.

Something closer to an anchor

’She’s waiting for me.’

’I promised her I’d get stronger. I promised I’d help her recover’

He thought of her hands, the way they trembled now when she tried to hold too much weight. He thought of every night he’d sat beside her bed, cultivating past exhaustion, chasing exactly this kind of strength so he could give her back a fraction of what the world had taken from her.

’I’m not losing myself here. Not like this. Not when she’s still waiting for me to come home.’

The thought anchored him.

He planted his feet against a sea that had no floor and simply refused to move.

---

"This is my body," he said, and this time the words came out steady, absolute. "My Soul Core. My power."

The golden eye flared, furious, another wave crashing against him.

He held.

"You don’t get to take it."

The tide screamed, wordless and enormous, and crashed against him a final time, every ounce of its hunger thrown into one last effort to sweep him under entirely.

Jason poured everything he had left into the wall, Fire and Lightning fused at the edges, the memory of Novaria’s hand in his the only thing keeping the wall from cracking.

For one endless, suspended moment, neither side gave an inch.

Then the golden tide broke.

Not defeated. Not destroyed.

Submitted.

The vast presence folded inward, its hunger unwinding into something quieter, resigned, its essence pouring into him, threading itself deeper into the bloodline already living in his blood.

---

Back in the physical chamber, Kane was fighting for his life.

Three wyrms, fully awake now, circled him with the sharp, coordinated fury of creatures denied an easy kill, and Kane moved through them like a man determined not to give them the satisfaction of a second chance.

Lightning coiled around his blade in tight, controlled arcs, each strike precise, economical, nothing wasted.

Crackle-snap!

One wyrm lunged. His sword met its throat mid-air, current arcing through the wound and locking every muscle in its body rigid before it hit the ground.

A second came from the side. He pivoted, blade tracing a bright silver line through the air, lightning threading along the edge in a technique that split into three separate strikes from a single motion, carving deep gouges through scale that should have been impossible to breach so cleanly.

"Move," he snarled, more to himself than the beasts, driving forward against the third.

It refused to yield ground, snapping and clawing, forcing him back a full step before he found an opening and drove his sword clean through its skull, current discharging the moment steel met bone.

He staggered back, breathing hard, chamber finally quiet.

"Stop it!" he shouted, already moving toward the collapsed rock, toward the boy who’d gone completely still with his hand still pressed against a fiery red egg.

He didn’t reach him in time to stop what happened next.

---

Jason’s eyes snapped open.

Power flooded through him in a single overwhelming surge, essence swelling far past anything his Core had ever held, the Intermediate Stage of First Level shattering outward and simply skipping past the entire Late Stage in one uninterrupted breath.

[Breakthrough: Second Level, Initial Stage]

The egg in front of him crumbled into fine golden dust, its essence already fully absorbed, and Jason staggered, gasping, every nerve in his body lit up with the aftershock of a change too large to fully process yet.

Somewhere behind him, the last wyrm that had lunged for his exposed back met its end against his own spine-deep instinct, his body reacting on bloodline reflex alone, catching the strike and shattering the creature’s skull without his mind ever fully rejoining the moment.

By the time his vision cleared properly, the chamber had gone silent again.

Kane stood a short distance away, sword still dripping faint traces of lightning, chest heaving from his own fight, staring at Jason with an expression that had shifted from confusion into something far sharper.
