Chapter 204: 204 | Join Our Squad

Cole suddenly set his glass down and leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table.

"Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, we should probably talk about why we’re actually here."

The table went quiet.

"The five of us have been talking," Cole continued. "Since the outbreak. We’ve been discussing the idea of forming a squad."

He looked around the table.

"A standard squad consists of six people and we currently have five people here.

Cole’s gaze moved to Dexter.

"We’d be very honored if you become our sixth member."

Dexter looked at Cole and then stated at the others who nodded and smile at him.

Bullet Spear Man was leaning back in his chair, with a neutral expression in hhs face.

Cole continued. "You saved our lives. And from what we’ve seen, you’re the kind of person who doesn’t abandon his position, no matter what comes at you."

He paused.

"That’s the kind of person we want watching our backs."

Dexter remained silent as he stared at the five people before him. Logically, joining a squad is quite useless and would simple tie him to multiple people and take his time to use to take care of his wives.

But if he could join a squad, it would be easier to hunt and clear dungeons with them when they familiarize themselves with their techniques, strengths and weaknesses.

Moroever, he wouldn’t need to respond to every single Monster outbreak nearby. As clearing one dungeon would automatically give him the month off.

Moreover, if he hopes to actually be able to get a land in this city, he would need lots of money and lots of connections that even the Ashford family can’t influence.

Surely, the incident with the housing agent would happen again so he needed all these things. But it’s a gradual process.

The others seem to hold their breathe as they waited for Dexter’s response.

"Alright."

Cole exhaled slowly.

"That’s exactly what we were hoping you’d say."

He extended his hand across the table.

"Welcome to the squad, Dexter."

Dexter looked at the hand.

He thought about his wives, about the house he didn’t have, the money he had lost, the fight he had just been in. The enemies that were circling his family like wolves around a campfire.

Dexter reached across the table and shook Cole’s hand.

"Thabk you.

"Welcome to the squad," Cole repeated, grinning.

The table broke into applause as Blitz whooped, Gridlock clapped and the others smiled.

Dexter smiled and from the corner of his eyes, he saw Aurora set down her glass and turned to look at him with a small smile.

Dexter chose to ignore it.

The conversation continued as they drank, they laughed and discussed.

Dexter found himself relaxing as the tension from the Harvest Homes confrontation and the adrenaline that had been simmering beneath his skin since the fight with the old man disappeared.

He hadn’t realized how much he had needed this.

Dexter checked his phone and saw it was 2:30 PM.

He had been here for almost two hours. The girls had been alone since morning but he had left food for them in the kitchen, so they wouldn’t go hungry. But food wasn’t the issue.

The issue was that three disabled women were sitting in a house in a neighborhood that had suffered two monster outbreaks in three weeks.

Even if he was sure nothing would happen, his mind wasn’t settled.

They might need him but here he was, drinking whiskey and having fun. A pang of guilt struck his chest and Dexter chose to ignore it as he chuckled at Gridlock’s joke.

However, the guilt strangely spread through his entire body, making him frown. He didn’t expect to have such a reaction.

Dexter sighed and he immediately stood up.

"I’m really sorry to cut this short, but I have to go. I hope you all understand where I’m coming from."

The table looked at him as the five people, each carrying a slightly different expression.

Cole smiled first. "Yes, yes. We understand. There’s no need to explain."

Blitz nodded rapidly. "We get it, man. Family first."

Gridlock inclined his head. "Of course."

The Tank nodded with a small smile while Bullet Spear Man said nothing as he simply raised his glass in a lazy salute.

Dexter smiled. "I apologize once again. You guys have fun and text me the details of when the combat training will occur. I’ll make sure to come early this time and make sure there are no unexpected incidents to delay me."

Cole laughed. "We’ll hold you to that."

Dexter smiled, raised a hand in farewell, and walked toward the door.

He opened the door and stepped into the hallway, closing it behind him.

He had taken three steps down the corridor when he heard the door open behind him again. He didn’t turn around immediately, but his Enhanced Hearing picked up the sound.

Reaching the restaurant lobby, he crossed it, stepped through the front door, and onto the sidewalk.

Halfway to his SUV, keys already in hand, he felt something.

His eyes flashed and he immediately turned around.

Aurora was there.

She hadn’t been there a second ago but she had suddenly appeared in a split second.

Ultra Realm experts possessed an ability transcending conventional movement not teleportation, exactly.

Teleportation involved instantaneous matter displacement, bypassing space but the ability Ultras possess was different.

It was a burst speed their bodies move at.

It was instantaneous repositioning. They could move from one location to another within their line of sight in a fraction of a second, their body translating through space with such speed that it looked like teleportation.

The range was roughly a hundred meters and anything within their visual field was reachable in an instant.

This was what made Ultra Realm experts so fundamentally different from Superhumans.

Dexter’s brows furrowed slightly.

"You wanted to see me," he said.

He had been waiting for this moment since he first saw her in the booth.
