I've Divorced Your Sister, Why Are You Still Here?
Chapter 79 - 78: Try Chasing Him
Chapter 79: Chapter 78: Try Chasing Him
Seeing so many exclamation points, Xiao Ran could feel her excitement.
He replied smugly, "It’s nothing. If you like it, I’ll find a way to get it for you!"
After all, being admired by a girl was a truly satisfying experience.
Staring at the reply on her phone, the girl pursed her lips as her heart melted.
The light from the screen reflected in her clear, sparkling eyes.
Scenes from the past flashed through her mind.
She stretched her long, slender legs slightly.
Her sparkling eyes stared intently at his reply, reading it again and again.
’Brother Xiao Ran is just too good to me.’
In that moment, her emotions finally overwhelmed her reason.
’She couldn’t control it anymore—she wanted to be with him!’
’When she was honest with herself, he was the person who treated her the best out of everyone she knew.’
’If I miss this chance with him, I’ll probably regret it for the rest of my life!’
’Maybe I should try to pursue him?’
At the thought, she tilted her head shyly and glanced toward the paper bag she had placed on top of the shoe cabinet. Inside was the new nightgown she’d bought.
’Maybe I should try it out tonight?’
...
Qiu Yuru had also finished eating by now and stood up to start clearing the dishes.
The rustling sounds pulled the girl, who was lost in thought, back to reality.
Seeing the older woman busying herself, the girl quickly put down her phone, stood up, and said in a clear, bright voice, "Auntie, I’ll do it, I’ll do it!"
A diligent young woman would never let her elders do the work!
Qiu Yuru smiled. "Then let’s do it together!"
By now, she and the girl were no longer so formal with each other. Without all the polite formalities, their interactions were nothing but comfortable and easygoing.
After she spoke, she carried the dishes she’d collected directly to the kitchen sink.
Just as she was about to turn on the faucet, she heard a familiar sound from the table—her phone was ringing.
The girl, who was walking behind her, heard the phone ring and quickly brought it over.
Qiu Yuru took the phone and glanced at the screen. It was her husband, Xiao Shengrong.
She casually put the phone to her ear. "What is it?"
’That old man. I told him to come, but he wouldn’t. What’s he calling me for now?’
On the other end, Xiao Shengrong chuckled. "Isn’t it because I miss you?"
Normally, it was always the two of them at home. Now that he was suddenly by himself, he felt a bit empty and out of sorts as he watched the sunset.
After all, his wife had been gone for a full day, and he hadn’t received so much as a single WeChat message from her.
Hearing this, Qiu Yuru looked smug. "Yeah, right. I don’t believe you. You just want to ask how our son is doing, don’t you?"
To be honest, Xiao Shengrong was, of course, curious.
However, being that direct wasn’t his style.
"Listen to yourself. I was just worried, since you’re in an unfamiliar place. I was afraid you’d get lost all by yourself."
Not to brag, but when it came to flattering his wife, he considered himself second to none in all of China.
Don’t think of flattering your wife as something shameful. You have to understand that when your wife is happy, she not only nags less but also does more work. And all he had to do was move his lips a little to reap the rewards of a happy and harmonious family.
It was a very clever strategy, really.
After all, men and women are fundamentally different.
Men see the world with their eyes, but women see it with their ears.
Since the two of them were standing close together, the girl could hear the voice on the phone crystal clear.
She couldn’t help but marvel to herself. ’Uncle is so good to Auntie.’
’He’s actually worried she’ll get lost.’
Marveling at this, she turned on the faucet and quietly started washing the dishes.
Qiu Yuru was very familiar with Xiao Shengrong’s playbook, but even so, she found it especially endearing.
She leaned against the side of the kitchen counter, smiling. "All right, all right. Your son is doing great over here, so you don’t need to worry. The apartment he switched to is very nice, too. He has good taste."
Her words made it clear to Xiao Shengrong that his son was fine, and everything was pretty much as he had imagined.
Xiao Ran was a grown man. The divorce had been his own choice, so he had to be prepared to bear the consequences.
If he didn’t even have that much going for him, how could he ever be a man who could stand tall?
He was an adult now; he had to take responsibility for his own choices!
Xiao Shengrong continued, "That’s good, then. I’m mainly worried about you. Go out and walk around when you have time. You love looking your best so much—the duty-free shops there have cheap makeup and lots of variety. Don’t be reluctant to spend money."
Qiu Yuru replied with a laugh, "Okay, okay, I get it. You just know I hate to splurge. You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?"
They had been married for a lifetime, and even though the family was well-off, Qiu Yuru truly had a love-hate relationship with buying makeup and clothes. It had been a lifelong internal debate.
Xiao Shengrong, on the other end of the line, cried foul. "I swear to God, I’m being sincere! My wife has worked hard her whole life; she deserves every nice thing. Just spend to your heart’s content. If you run out of money, just use my pension!"
Though he sounded very generous, he knew in his heart that Qiu Yuru would never buy anything particularly expensive. When it came to spending, she had always been a very rational consumer.
He was very reassured on that front.
Qiu Yuru glanced at the girl washing the dishes and said into the phone, "Alright, alright, I’m not talking to you anymore. I’m hanging up if there’s nothing else."
She felt too bad to let the girl do all the work by herself.
Casually placing her phone on the counter, Qiu Yuru rolled up her sleeves and picked up a dishcloth from the side of the sink.
As she began to wipe down the counter, she said casually, "That was Xiao Ran’s dad. He said he missed me, but really, he was just worried about how his son was doing."
The girl turned her head to look at Qiu Yuru, who was smiling with pure happiness, and couldn’t help but sigh in admiration.
"Auntie, Uncle is so good to you."
She meant it. Her own dad had never been this good to her mom.
Even when they were at home, they would never say such mushy things, to say nothing of over the phone.
Their conversations were basically the "state your business and hang up" type.
As plain as boiled water.
At the mention of this, Qiu Yuru’s face lit up with a happy smile.
’Undeniably, marrying Xiao Shengrong was probably the best decision she’d ever made in her life.’
"Don’t just look at how good your uncle is to me now. Back in the day, he wouldn’t even spare me a proper glance."
Saying this seemed to open the floodgates for Qiu Yuru.
"You have no idea how many people were chasing after your uncle back then. But in the end, none of them were as formidable as me!"
Her tone carried a hint of pride.
The truth was, while a young Qiu Yuru was very pretty, her grades weren’t good. Her classmate, Xiao Shengrong, on the other hand, got excellent grades. To use today’s slang, he was a total brainiac.
On top of that, he was also handsome when he was young, so plenty of girls liked him.
Hearing this, the girl washing the dishes couldn’t help but become curious.
