Knight: Becoming King of the World

Chapter 421 - 285: The Missing Pursuit

  • Next Chapter

Only through decades of war could enough land and space be cleared to ennoble new lords with military merit.

The core logic was simple: there were only so many positions to fill, but the number of aspirants was always growing.

Every reshuffling meant a collision of countless ambitions and desires. Old noble houses were weakened, while new powers rose to seize the opportunity, filling the newly empty positions.

And those nobles who failed to secure their footing during the reshuffling could only watch as their family's glory and status waned, eventually becoming sacrifices in others' scrambles for power.

Altan knew the cruelty of it all. What he sought was merely to secure a stable foothold for himself and his family in this endless game of power.

The Battania Bay region, that stretch of largely undeveloped land, was the new opportunity he saw.

It was far from the central empire's vortex of power, with enough space for him to build his own strength and establish a domain of his own.

"My lord, how much farther to the Battania Bay region?" one of the knights couldn't help but ask, his voice tinged with exhaustion and anxiety.

Altan frowned slightly, estimating the distance. "At our current pace, we should arrive in another seventeen days. But we absolutely cannot let our guard down on this final leg of the journey."

Altan's brow knitted together, a flicker of suspicion and vigilance in his eyes.

He rode at a slow pace at the head of the column, glancing back from time to time in the direction they had come, as if searching for some sign.

But there was nothing besides the rising dust and the hoof-trodden earth.

'Strange, why haven't Alvin's forces caught up yet?' Altan muttered to himself, a hint of undeniable confusion in his voice.

Though his voice was soft, the knights beside him heard him, and they too grew visibly confused.

"My lord, do you think Count Alvin is up to something?" a knight asked cautiously, his tone laced with worry.

Altan shook his head, his gaze deep and complex. "I don't think Alvin would let me off the hook so easily. He's always been a cautious and ruthless man. If he really wanted me dead, he would never give me a moment's respite."

He paused for a moment, as if deep in thought, then continued, "Perhaps he is waiting for a better opportunity, or for the support of other families.

Alvin knows full well that if he moves against me now, he might alert the other nobles, and even provoke unnecessary conflicts."

A cold smile touched Altan's lips. "He's a master of political maneuvering; he won't reveal his hand so easily. Perhaps he's waiting for an opportunity for me to walk right into his trap, or maybe he's plotting something even bigger."

He raised his head and looked toward the distant horizon, as if he could see that unknown land of the Battania Bay region.

While it was filled with opportunity, it was equally filled with the unknown and with danger. Altan knew he had to remain vigilant at all times; he couldn't afford to lower his guard because of a momentary stroke of luck.

"Whatever Alvin is planning, we can't give him any openings," Altan said, his voice low and resolute.

"We must reach the Battania Bay region as quickly as possible and establish our stronghold. Only there will we have enough power to counter his schemes."

The knights nodded in agreement. They knew Altan was right. In this imperial heartland, a place rife with plots and intrigue, the slightest oversight could have fatal consequences.

"My lord, what should we do now?" another knight asked, a trace of urgency in his voice.

Altan smiled faintly, a flicker of resolve in his eyes. "We press on, but with greater caution. Just because Alvin's forces haven't caught up doesn't mean we're safe.

He could be watching us from the shadows, waiting for us to make a mistake."

He paused, then continued, "From now on, we must choose our routes more carefully, avoiding places where we might be observed. At the same time, we need to heighten our security and be ready for a potential ambush at any moment."

Altan's gaze swept over each knight, his tone grave. "Remember, we have no path of retreat. Only by establishing our own power base in the Battania Bay region can we truly control our own destinies. Until then, we cannot relax for even a moment."

The knights were bolstered by Altan's words, and the fighting spirit in their eyes was rekindled.

Although they didn't know why Alvin's forces hadn't pursued them, they knew that Altan was their leader, and as long as they followed him, they had a chance to survive this cruel game of power.

"My lord, we swear to protect you until we reach the Battania Bay region!" one of the knights declared, his voice filled with confidence.

Altan smiled faintly and nodded. "I have faith in you. We've all faced life and death together. There's nothing we can't overcome. As long as we stand united, there's no obstacle we can't surmount."

The sound of hooves rang out once more as Altan and his knights continued to ride hard.

Before them lay the unknown Battania Bay region, a land full of opportunity, but also full of challenges.

But Altan was prepared. No matter how many difficulties and obstacles lay ahead, he would lead his knights to forge a path of their own.
