Knotting His Rejected Breeder

Chapter 309 - 43: Under Siege

Dane pulled the heavy mahogany library door shut behind him, the soft click of the latch echoing down the corridor.

Henrik was leaning against the wood-paneled wall a few feet away, his arms folded tight across his chest. The moment Dane stepped into the hall, Henrik pushed off the wall and straightened, his boots thacking sharply against the runner rug.

"Finally," Henrik grunted, his tone laced with impatience.

Dane paused, casting a flat look at his Beta. "You were the one who insisted the council was waiting."

"I did," Henrik conceded, falling into step as Dane turned toward the grand staircase. "That was before I had to physically intercept Ramon to keep him from charging up here to drag you out himself."

"He wouldn’t have made it past the landing," Dane said, keeping his pace steady.

"He certainly claimed he was going to try."

They descended the broad marble stairs together, their shoes rhythmically tracking down to the ground floor.

"What’s the actual mood down there?" Dane asked, keeping his voice low as they reached the halfway landing.

"Bad."

"That narrows it down to every day this week."

Henrik offered a brief, sideways glance, his jaw set. "Ramon is pacing a trench into the floorboards. Blane is trying to keep everyone focused on logistics, but nobody’s listening. Sonia is spending half her energy telling both of them to stop barking at each other. Meanwhile, your mother has been asking precise, uncomfortable questions that nobody in that room has the authority or the information to answer."

They reached the main foyer, the high ceilings amplifying the muffled sounds of activity outside.

"And Hannah?" Dane asked.

"Not in the room."

Dane slowed his stride slightly, casting a sharp look sideways. "Do you know where she went?"

"No," Henrik replied cleanly. "She made herself scarce before the arguments started."

They pushed through the heavy glass doors of the main entrance, stepping out into the cool, mountain-tinged air of the central courtyard.

Despite the looming threat at the pack boundaries, the BloodMoon estate was a hive of controlled chaos. Luxury sedans and heavy SUVs belonging to visiting pack dignitaries and high-ranking members lined the curved asphalt driveway, with several more parked bumper-to-bumper along the manicured lawn near the main residence.

Across the green, grounds workers carried wooden crates and iron fixtures toward the garden where the wedding preparations were still stubbornly underway. Near the central pavilion, two men balanced on stepladders, securing a dense arrangement of white roses and dark greenery to an arched wooden frame. A woman with an iPad tucked under her arm stood at the base, sharply gesturing toward the reception canopy to direct a crew hauling folding chairs.

Dane slowed his pace, his eyes tracking an unmarked silver delivery truck as it lumbered down the service road toward the rear gates.

Henrik followed his gaze. "That one made it through the pass just before the transport advisories went out. Last one for the day."

Dane gave a silent nod and resumed his stride across the courtyard paving stones.

They passed the residential sector of the compound, where stone cottages stood behind low retaining walls and neatly edged lawns. A few pack members were out in their yards, trying to maintain a facade of normalcy. A middle-aged man was spraying down the hood of his truck with a garden hose while his young daughter sat on the front porch steps, swinging her legs over a bowl of fruit. Farther down the path, two off-duty patrol warriors were standing near a black pickup, speaking in hushed, urgent tones.

As Dane walked past, one of the warriors caught his eye and called out his name in greeting.

Dane kept his gaze fixed ahead, acknowledging the man with only a firm tilt of his chin.

The administration hub stood at the eastern edge of the estate—a rectangular, two-story structure of dark tinted glasses.

Inside, the atmosphere shifted instantly. The air was cool, filtered, and smelled faintly of floor polish. The main lobby was quiet, saved from dead silence only by the low, constant murmur of the building’s internal phone line at the reception desk.

Henrik guided him past the front desk toward the central alcove, before turning back toward the inner hallway.

They passed a smaller breakout room where the glass walls were lined with whiteboards. Inside, two Omega wolves were discussing in hushed tones.

At the far end of the quiet corridor, Henrik reached out, seized the heavy silver handle of the main conference room, and pushed the door open.

The conversation inside ceased immediately.

Every face turned toward the doorway.

Ramon was seated at the far head of the mahogany table, his dark suit jacket draped over the back of his leather chair, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows. Sonia sat directly to his left, her posture rigid, though the dark circles under her eyes betrayed her exhaustion.

Across from them, Blane had his phone turned face down at the table. Next to Sonia, the chair typically occupied by Hannah sat noticeably vacant.

Dane took in the layout instantly, his eyes lingering on the empty seat.

"Where is Hannah?"

Sonia leaned back, adjusting her watch. "She wasn’t with us when the call was made."

Ramon didn’t wait. He leaned forward, resting his forearms heavily against the table.

"Where is your wife?"

Dane met his father’s glare without flinching. "Destiny is in the main house, where she belongs."

Ramon’s expression hardened, his jaw setting tightly. "You left her isolated up there?"

"I came here to conduct a council meeting," Dane said flatly. "Not to hold court."

"You can’t shield her from the reality of this situation, Dane," Ramon snapped, his voice rising a fraction.

Dane pulled back the heavy leather chair at the foot of the table and sat down, resting his hands flat on the polished wood.

"I’m not shielding her from anything."

"She is the Alpha’s wife now," Ramon pressed, leaning farther across the table. "Whatever touches BloodMoon touches her. Whatever pressure Vance applies to our borders applies to her as well. You married her, Dane. You don’t get the luxury of siloing her away from the fallout."

Dane held his father’s gaze for three long seconds.

"She knows precisely where we stand."

"And?"

"She understands the stakes."

Ramon opened his mouth to fire back, but Sonia reached across the corner of the table and laid a firm hand over his forearm.

"Enough, Ramon. Drop it."

Ramon glared at her hand, then pulled back into his seat with a dark scowl.

"We have actual operational threats to address," Sonia said, turning her attention directly to Dane. "Brief us on the current telemetry."

Dane gave a brief nod toward Henrik, who stepped up to the wall in front of the room and began.

"Redstone Pass remains completely sealed to civilian and commercial traffic," Henrik began, his tone shifting into smooth tactical reporting. "Silvercrest light infantry units have taken up positions along the ridgeline on their side of the demarcation line. Our advance scouts haven’t confirmed any physical boundary crossings yet."

Blane looked up from his array of phones, tapping a pen against his notepad.

"Do we have a troop estimate?"

"Not a definitive one," Henrik answered. "They’re staying below the crest to obscure their numbers."

Ramon let out a harsh breath. "They’ve been sitting on that ridge for hours. Our scouts should have a body count by now."

Henrik didn’t break cadence. "We know their numbers are growing. We don’t know their total operational strength yet."

"What about heavy transport?" Ramon demanded. "Vehicles?"

"More supply trucks have staged behind their main encampment," Henrik replied. "They’re settling in."

Sonia folded her arms across her chest, her brows drawing together.

"So it’s a structural buildup."

"It is."

Dane leaned back in his chair, tapping a slow, rhythmic pattern against the armrest.

"They’re not staging for an immediate breach."

Ramon turned his sharp gaze back to his son.

"And how did you arrive at that comforting conclusion?"

"Because if Vance wanted to launch a direct assault, he wouldn’t leave his forces sitting out in the open on an exposed ridge waiting for us to target them," Dane said calmly. "He would have pushed through the pass before our forward patrols even registered their presence."

Ramon’s scowl deepened.

"Then what is he doing?"

Dane looked toward the glowing map on the screen.

"Siege. He wants us to feel trapped without him having to attack anybody."

Blane let out a quiet sigh, nodding in agreement.

"It’s working on the supply lines already."

Dane turned to him.

"What’s the status?"

"Two of our primary suppliers of foodstuffs and livestocks have been stopped from passing through the keep," Blane said, shaking his head. "By Vance’s men."

Ramon sat up straight.

"Because of a few Silvercrest scouts at Redstone?"

"Because nobody wants a multi-million-dollar cargo truck idling on a stretch of highway watched by an armed pack werewolves," Blane replied candidly.

Sonia looked between them, her tone laced with concern.

"Does Vance actually have the authority to intercept those transports?"

"He doesn’t need to intercept them," Dane said softly. "He just needs to make the road look dangerous enough that the drivers decide to turn around on their own."

Ramon turned toward the screen, staring at the red indicators.

"What about our outward shipments? The timber and livestock contracts?"

Henrik paced back and forth.

"One commercial transport was turned back at the southern boundary this afternoon by local highway authorities citing security concerns. Another convoy is sitting in the staging yard, waiting for clear orders."

Ramon swore softly under his breath, leaning back and rubbing his temples.

Blane set his pen down with a quiet snap.

"So he’s suffocating the territory’s economy without technically breaking the peace accord."

Dane nodded once.

"That is the strategy."

Suddenly, the heavy conference room door unlatched and swung inward.
