Landlord in the Arctic
Chapter 687: Whispers
Chapter 687 -440: Whispers
Nighttime.
Dark clouds hid the moon, leaving the room exceptionally quiet.
The sound of wind gusting outside tapped gently against the windowpane.
Feng Mountain, who had trouble sleeping in unfamiliar beds, lay on the wooden bed, tossing and turning until the sheets were a tangled mess.
Lying on the hard wooden bed, he tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep.
His habit of only being able to sleep in his own bed made him feel ill at ease all over on this strange mattress.
Every time he turned over, the wooden bed would protest with a CREAK.
Just as Feng Mountain was growing frustrated, a faint rustling sound suddenly came from the doorknob.
‘Who could it be at this hour?’
Feng Mountain sat up and leaned forward slightly, his eyes fixed on the door, a wary look in them.
At the same time, one hand reached for the holster in his clothes, while the other reached for the switch of the bedside lamp.
Just as his fingertips were about to touch the switch…
The dark clouds that had been obscuring the moon slowly drifted apart. Bright, clear moonlight, like liquid silver, suddenly spilled into the room, blanketing the floor in a silvery-white sheen.
By the cool moonlight,
Feng Mountain made out the silhouette of the figure at the door through the hazy light and shadows.
He guessed who it was.
And he also had a faint idea of why they were here.
As a corner of the blanket was lifted, a voluptuous figure slowly slipped inside.
The figure then emerged from under the covers near his torso, lay down on Feng Mountain’s chest, and listened quietly to his heartbeat as if it were the most beautiful melody in the world.
She was trembling slightly, and her breathing was a little ragged, a clear sign of her nervousness.
“This isn’t fair to you,” Feng Mountain said softly, his voice tinged with a hint of resignation.
“There’s no fair or unfair. I’ve said it before, I won’t marry again. Just being by your side is enough, unless you drive me away.” Her voice, like a murmur, was filled with resolute affection, reaching Feng Mountain’s ears clearly in the silent night.
Her words, spoken with such finality, moved Feng Mountain deeply.
He didn’t say anything more, just raised a hand and slowly drew the curtains.
Like a black stage curtain, the drapes instantly blocked the prying moonlight, plunging the room into darkness once more.
Under the cover of darkness, everything seemed to become safer, more secret.
Gently holding the person in his arms, Feng Mountain’s eyes filled with tenderness and compassion, wishing he could merge her into his very life.
CREAK!
CREAK!
In the darkness, the wooden bed began to play the night’s dance music.
….
The long, noisy night finally passed.
In the early morning, before the first rays of dawn had fully pierced the clouds, the crisp sound of roosters crowing rang out from the ranch’s chicken coop.
The crows rose and fell, echoing through the quiet, cold morning, breaking the silence of the night, awakening the sleeping ranch, and announcing the start of a new day.
Feng Mountain gently lifted the arm draped over his body. It was soft and warm, carrying the languor of its still-sleeping owner.
Then, he picked up the clothes he had set aside and slowly got dressed, one piece at a time.
Just as he finished buttoning his shirt and was about to get up, a slight rustle came from the blankets behind him.
“You’re awake? Sleep a little longer. I’m going to contact Petroleum to confirm our departure time,” Feng Mountain said softly, turning his head to look at the blankets, his tone full of gentleness.
“Mmm!”
A lazy reply, tinged with sleepiness, came from within the blankets.
After that, the blankets fell silent again, as if everything had returned to the tranquility of dreamland.
Watching the gentle rise and fall of the blankets, the corners of Feng Mountain’s mouth turned up unconsciously in a faint smile. He then tiptoed out of the room.
Just as he stepped out of the room,
Feng Mountain heard Erica’s loud voice coming from downstairs.
He slowly walked down the stairs to the ground floor.
In the living room, he saw several women gathered around Lady Payne, excitedly talking about what had happened at the ski resort.
Erica, in particular, was gesticulating wildly as she described the scene, while Tammy and Demi chimed in from time to time. Laughter rose and fell throughout the living room.
AHEM!
Feng Mountain coughed twice on purpose.
The sound wasn’t too loud or too soft, just enough to catch everyone’s attention and announce that he was up.
“Feng, you’re awake!” Tammy turned at the sound, her eyes instantly lighting up. A lovely smile bloomed on her face, and like a cheerful little bird, she stood up and threw herself at Feng Mountain.
Feng Mountain caught Tammy securely, his gaze unconsciously drifting to Lady Payne.
Facing this woman with a legendary background, Feng Mountain felt an inexplicable sense of guilt for some reason. He quickly greeted her politely, his tone respectful.
“Good morning, ma’am!”
“Good morning. Laura has breakfast ready. There are waffles, beef sausages, and pancakes with fruit preserves. I hope that’s to your liking.”
The older woman nodded with a smile.
Perhaps it was because she knew her eldest son, Gruus, and her daughter, Jenny, would soon be going to the Crown Territory.
Her smile today was exceptionally kind and amiable.
“I’m fine with anything!” Feng Mountain said with a gentle smile as he put Tammy down and walked over to a chair in the living room to sit.
Erica, sitting nearby, had dark circles under her eyes and looked somewhat exhausted.
Seeing Feng Mountain sit down next to her,
her previously happy expression immediately soured. She turned her head away, pretending not to see him, looking just like a pouting child.
“Erica, you didn’t sleep well last night?” Feng Mountain asked out of politeness, not noticing the change in her mood.
“Mm-hmm!” At his question, Erica’s dark circles seemed to become even more pronounced. She said irritably, “I don’t know whose room had a mouse in it last night, but it was squeaking all night long.”
As she spoke, she deliberately stressed the word “squeaking,” her eyes darting toward Feng Mountain, intentionally or not.
