Landlord in the Arctic
Chapter 713: Recruitment
In truth, Feng Mountain only had a half-baked understanding of how to run a tourism business.
But not knowing was fine, as long as he didn’t meddle.
Professional matters should be left to the professionals.
Back in China, Ouyang Xue had been navigating the tourism industry for many years.
She was well-connected and experienced. Having her communicate with Mova would cut through a lot of red tape and make things go much more smoothly.
Thinking of this, Feng Mountain immediately said to Mova, “Alright, here’s the plan. First, go to Fairbanks or Anchorage and find a suitable location to register an office. Then, hire some employees and build a team. For the specific details that follow, you’ll communicate with the travel agency in China. Here, take down this number.”
As he spoke, Feng Mountain handed Mova a slip of paper with Ouyang Xue’s phone number on it.
“Okay, I’ll get right on it.”
Mova replied as she took the slip of paper.
After asking a few simple questions about the requirements for the office, she immediately returned to her cabin, packed her things, and hurriedly left the Crown Territory to dive into her new job.
After dealing with the two groups of people, Feng Mountain felt as if all the strength had been drained from his body. He wearily rubbed his temples, his gaze a little unfocused as he stared out the window at the grayish-white sky.
Without him realizing it, the daylight hours had arrived. The gray light outside created an inexplicable sense of oppression.
He picked up his phone. The screen displayed 12:30 PM.
“You really don’t know how hard it is until you’re the boss.”
Feng Mountain sighed softly, muttering to himself.
‘I just want to be a hands-off boss, but so many things still keep landing on my plate.’
‘And time is flying by incredibly fast.’
He thought about the issues with Little Barry and Old Tom that still needed to be handled. He also had to have a proper meeting with David about the camp’s layout, start construction on the classroom soon, and till the plantation fields.
All these tasks flooded his mind at once.
Feng Mountain felt a sharp headache coming on and couldn’t help but press his forehead.
Just then, Jenny came to the table carrying a tray with his lunch.
After placing the lunch on the table, she gently settled a drowsy Little Mira into Feng Mountain’s arms.
Little Mira smelled her father’s familiar scent, and her previously drowsy eyes snapped open.
She wriggled through an opening in his animal hide coat and started squirming around inside.
Too tired to deal with Little Mira scurrying around like a mouse inside his coat, Feng Mountain looked at the lunch Jenny had prepared for him.
A serving of braised beef with rice and a glass of iced beer.
The beef was cooked to a tempting, glossy red, and the rich aroma of star anise filled the air.
Normally, Feng Mountain’s appetite would have been stirred.
But right now, he couldn’t muster any desire to eat at all.
He just kept pressing his temples, trying to relieve the throbbing pain that came in waves.
Seeing Feng Mountain just staring at the food without any intention of picking up his chopsticks, Jenny couldn’t help but worry.
She walked up behind him, gently took over the task of rubbing his temples, and placed her hands softly on them. She began to knead them slowly, asking in a low voice,
“Are you very tired?”
“More tired than I imagined.” Feng Mountain closed his eyes slightly and leaned back in his chair, relaxing into the comforting touch of Jenny’s fingertips. It was as if his fatigue had finally found an outlet. He spoke like a sulking child.
“Why don’t you find some professionals to help you?” Jenny suggested, full of concern, as she thoughtfully massaged his temples. “That way, things would be easier for you. You wouldn’t have to carry everything on your own shoulders.”
Feng Mountain knew he was short-staffed.
It wasn’t that he hadn’t thought about hiring people.
After all, a person’s energy and abilities are limited.
If he wanted to develop the Crown Territory, trying to do it all by himself would work him to death.
The problem was that capable people would reject the offer outright the moment they heard the job was in the Far North Tundra Region. They wouldn’t even consider it.
“I want to hire people to help, too, but the Crown Territory is just too remote,” Feng Mountain sighed helplessly.
“How about picking some people from the camp staff? It would be good as a temporary solution,” Jenny said thoughtfully, continuing to massage his head. “Especially a finance person. I’m about to have a breakdown from calculating the incoming and outgoing bills every day. Sometimes I’m still tallying numbers in my dreams.”
Jenny also took the opportunity to voice her own recent struggles.
Managing the restaurant was well within her abilities, but managing finances was really not her strong suit.
The Crown Territory’s businesses were growing daily and its affairs were becoming more complex. After taking care of Feng Mountain’s daily needs, she had to sit with her phone and a calculator to check every single transaction and then update the ledgers.
This was especially true every time Feng gave out cash or checks to the employees, as everything had to be clearly recorded.
You had to understand, misplacing a single decimal point could create a significant deficit. The pressure was just too much.
“I know it hasn’t been easy for you. Do you have someone in mind?”
Feng Mountain knew the pressure Jenny had been under recently.
He also knew that he really didn’t have any suitable people available at the moment.
What’s more, he needed someone skilled in financial management.
And this person had to be tight-lipped.
After all, the revenue details of some of the Crown Territory’s businesses were confidential and could absolutely not be leaked.
The moment he finished speaking, Jenny jumped in, her reaction so fast it was as if she had prepared the answer in advance.
“I do! Tessa, who helps in the kitchen, would be perfect.”
Feng Mountain couldn’t help but suck in a sharp breath. He reached into his coat, pulled out Little Mira who was busy practicing her grip, and held her firmly in his lap.
Then he turned around.
A teasing smile on his face, he looked at the slightly embarrassed Jenny and deliberately poked fun at her.
“Aha! So you had this planned all along!”
Jenny’s face instantly turned red with embarrassment. She quickly waved her hands and explained, “No, not at all! I’m really not good at accounting; I got Cs in math back in school. I just think Tessa is always so serious and responsible with her work. Plus, she worked in finance before she became a wanderer. If we let her try, it might just work out.”
