Chapter 734: Chapter 463: Slipping Away (Part 2)
"I definitely won’t get a spanking, but I’m not so sure about you. You sent the Prince and Princess away, and you left Xiong Da and Xiong Er behind in the Moonlight Forest. Auntie Jenny will be super mad when she finds out."
With that, she spun around and darted out of the office like a nimble rabbit, her bright laughter echoing from outside the door.
In truth, the moment Feng Shan heard that Xiong Da and Xiong Er had returned, he completely panicked.
He thought back to yesterday.
He had coaxed the Prince and Princess into taking the Wolf Pack to explore the Tundra. After that, he had gotten so tied up with a mountain of tasks—logging, building houses, buying vegetables—that he was completely overwhelmed.
The fact that he’d left Xiong Da and Xiong Er behind at the White Wolf Family’s nest had slipped his mind entirely.
He figured the two little ones must not have been able to find the Wolf Pack and had run back to the camp on their own out of desperation.
At this thought, Feng Shan’s heart sank.
’Now I’m in trouble!’
Don’t let Jenny’s gentle nature fool you; she usually seemed so soft and delicate.
But when she got angry, it was worse than taking a beating.
Her usual tactic was a kind of passive aggression: she wouldn’t let him sleep in their bed.
The mere thought of it was enough to give him a headache.
Feng Shan’s anxiety flared. His mind raced as he tried to figure out how to explain things to Jenny and calm her anger, but for the moment, he was completely clueless.
DRING DRING DRING!!
Just then, the sharp ring of a cell phone echoed through the office.
As if clutching a lifeline, Feng Shan frantically pulled out his phone. He took a closer look and saw that it was Old Zhao calling. A flicker of confusion crossed his eyes before he answered.
The moment the call connected, a torrent of curses came pouring through the phone.
"Feng Shan, you son of a bitch! Us four old-timers are out here building a road for you in the middle of this godforsaken Tundra, while you’re at home living the high life."
"We’ve been at this for over half a fucking month, and you haven’t even come to check on us once."
"Do you have any conscience at all, you brat?"
In the past, if anyone had dared to curse him out like this, Feng Shan would have flown into a rage and, at the very least, slapped them across the face a few times.
But now, the yelling was like music to his ears.
Feng Shan’s brow gradually unfurrowed, and a faint smile even appeared on his face.
He was thankful that Old Zhao’s call had come just in time, giving him a chance to escape the Crown Territory.
Holding the phone, Feng Shan nodded and bowed, apologizing profusely.
He looked as if Old Zhao were standing right in front of him.
He kept apologizing.
He explained that a lot had been happening at the camp recently, that he’d been swamped with work, and that he had regrettably neglected them.
He promised he would head to the construction site right away to properly thank the four hardworking, vigorous old gentlemen who were still fighting on the front lines.
His apology was as sincere as could be.
Finally, he hurriedly hung up, afraid that Old Zhao might say something else.
Then, without a backward glance, he bolted out of the office.
He found Nash in the workshop.
As soon as he walked into the workshop, he saw Nash surrounded by tools and several bizarrely shaped pieces of furniture.
Some of the furniture was crooked, some had parts of uneven lengths, and it was clear none of it was finished.
Feng Shan instantly understood who had made the desks and chairs in his office.
He couldn’t help but rub his forehead and give a wry smile.
"Khilla!" Seeing Feng Shan, Nash turned off the sander in his hand and greeted him.
Feng Shan got straight to the point. "Are you busy? Come with me for a bit."
"Okay!" Nash didn’t even ask what it was about, immediately putting down his tools and nodding in agreement.
"Let’s go quietly. Don’t let Jenny see us!" Feng Shan whispered, adding a special instruction as he glanced warily at the workshop door.
The two of them then snuck across the wooden bridge, hopped on a snowmobile, and zipped away from the camp.
The snowmobile sped across the Mossy Tundra, leaving a long trail in the grass.
Upon reaching the runway,
Feng Shan rushed toward the hangar as if his feet were on fire, practically breaking into a run.
Pushing open the hangar doors, the two of them worked together to push the Carnation, which hadn’t been flown in a while, onto the runway.
He then eagerly scrambled into the cockpit and skillfully activated the various systems.
As the engine roared to life, the Carnation slowly ascended, flying off into the night sky.
Nash, sitting in the back, gazed at the brightly lit camp on the Mossy Tundra, his heart filled with confusion.
’In his experience, whenever Khilla was leaving the Crown Territory, no matter how rushed he was, he would always inform Sister Jenny and make sure camp affairs were in order.’
’But today’s situation... we’re sneaking around like thieves, terrified of being discovered.’
Nash gripped the armrests of his seat, his body swaying slightly with the plane’s turbulence.
He silently looked up at Khilla.
He guessed to himself.
’Could it be that Khilla did something wrong again and angered Sister Jenny?’
Meanwhile, on the grassy area outside the camp’s classroom, seven or eight children were curiously gathered around Xiong Da and Xiong Er.
Seeing the two little guys looking so wretched and pitiful, the children’s hearts ached for them. They quickly offered their snacks to the two little Polar Bears, who began to wolf them down.
When Xiong Da and Xiong Er were wandering homeless in Kaktovik Town,
their lives had been incredibly miserable.
They could only rummage through trash heaps for food, often going from one meal to the next with nothing in between, and were starved to skin and bones.
Later, they were luckily rescued by Feng Shan.
At the time, due to severe malnutrition, they were pitifully light, weighing only a few kilograms.
After coming to the Crown Territory, Jenny cared for them meticulously, doting on them.
She fed them fresh milk and meat every day, treating them as if they were her own children.
Later, Xiong Da and Xiong Er went to the Moonlight Forest with the Prince and Princess.
There, they enjoyed the treatment of young princes.
Every time the Wolf Pack caught prey, they would give the two of them the first share.
In just over two short months, the two little ones blew up like balloons. Their weight shot up from just a few kilograms to several dozen, and in a flash, they transformed into two roly-poly, chubby white bears.
Originally,
Xiong Da and Xiong Er had been living a happy and carefree life with the Wolf Pack in the Moonlight Forest.
They had long since grown accustomed to the rhythm of life in the forest and got along harmoniously with the members of the Wolf Pack.
Just yesterday,
a wolf patrolling the territory had let out a cry, signaling an intruder.
The alarm call spread throughout the entire Wolf Pack.
Upon hearing the call, the Prince and Princess led the entire pack out of their den to defend their territory.
Hearing the commotion, Xiong Da and Xiong Er excitedly followed behind.
However, after running for some distance, they were too heavy and gradually fell behind the pack’s pace.
Xiong Da was panting heavily, while Xiong Er was so tired his tongue was lolling out, and their steps grew slower and slower.
In the end, they simply couldn’t run anymore. They dejectedly returned to the Wolf’s Nest, dove into the warm den, and fell fast asleep.
In the Moonlight Forest, intrusions were actually a common occurrence.
Sometimes it was a migrating moose or reindeer that accidentally wandered in; other times it was uninvited guests like brown bears or bobcats from the outside.
But to Xiong Da and Xiong Er, it didn’t matter what came.
Nothing was more important than sleeping soundly in their warm den.
Xiong Da and Xiong Er lay in their warm den, sleeping ever so soundly, completely unaware of what was happening outside.
They slept straight through to the next day.
It wasn’t until their stomachs started rumbling in protest that they groggily crawled out of the den.
Usually, when they were hungry, the Prince and Princess would have buried food for them in the snow next to the den’s entrance.
But when they woke up this morning, they were surprised to find that not only was there no food by the entrance, but there wasn’t even a shadow of the Wolf Pack.
At first, the two bear cubs thought the Wolf Pack had just gone out to hunt as usual and would be back soon.
So they didn’t think much of it and started playing and roughhousing near the Wolf’s Nest.
As time went on, their stomachs grew emptier and emptier, but there was still no sign of the Wolf Pack, nor were there any howls in the forest.
At this, Xiong Da and Xiong Er finally panicked.
They searched around the Wolf’s Nest for a long time, but not only did they fail to find any trace of the pack, they also fell into mud pits several times.
Finally, so hungry they didn’t know what else to do, they thought of the Crown Camp.
Although they only had a vague memory of the direction to the camp, their hunger now drove them to leave the Moonlight Forest.
Following the route from their faint memories, they passed through the Melting Ice River Valley.
They stumbled all the way to the Mossy Tundra.
Coincidentally, they happened to run into the children, who were outside for their plant class.
And that’s what led to the later scene in the office, where Fiona reported to Jenny, and a terrified Feng Shan fled in panic.
