Chapter 347: Chapter 316: Humans Are Indeed Creatures That Fear Comparison
In truth, it wasn’t just Lloyd and the other students who were shocked by the sight before them. Even the several lecturers present wore expressions of astonishment.
It seemed a scene like this was a rare sight, even during archaeological expeditions.
This continued until Professor Fernando suddenly barked out an order:
"Quiet! Have you all forgotten the pre-departure briefing?"
Everyone finally collected themselves. Then, a Bald Mage was heard asking in a low voice:
"Is this the Miracle you were looking for?"
"Yes."
Professor Fernando nodded, then gave a simple explanation to the others:
"On the day the doomsday Calamity descended, the former dean activated the Miracle Magic—Time Freeze—in an attempt to control the spread of Spiritual Contamination within the academy. What you see before you is the result...
Unfortunately, the price of this Miracle was too heavy. Even for a Radiant Gold like the former dean, he couldn’t maintain it for long. As a result, the Miracle’s area of effect was far from large enough, only taking hold in a very localized area...
It wasn’t until now, after multiple research groups from our history department risked falling into madness, that we discovered this small Miracle from the Forbidden Knowledge we recovered. That’s what led to today’s operation."
At this point, the professor suddenly raised his voice, his tone shifting to one of rousing passion as he continued:
"Everyone! The Miracle is right before us! The future of humanity is right before us! Only by recovering the lost Miracle Magic of the past can our civilization usher in true hope! Therefore, I ask you all to lend me your strength!"
As he spoke, he looked toward the students floating in mid-air and added:
"I believe that they, frozen in the past, would also want to see us greet a new future!"
His words managed to stabilize the group’s morale and resolve, at least to some extent. The expressions on everyone’s faces eased considerably.
"Alright, let’s begin. We’ll proceed as planned. We need to find the ’Kernel’ of this Miracle and collect as much of the nearby knowledge as possible. That will be the key to deciphering the Miracle...
The three of you from the Ancient Magic System, and Toledo from the Engineering System, please come with me deeper inside. I need your experience and knowledge to help me locate the Kernel.
Lille and Randy, you two take the students and collect knowledge around here. Set up the Orbit. And remember, be extremely careful.
Lloyd of the Space System, I need you to carefully monitor any spatial fluctuations in the vicinity. If anything happens, you must notify everyone."
Professor Fernando finished giving out orders, re-emphasizing everyone’s tasks, and finally added a reminder:
"I’ll repeat this one more time: do not look at them, do not think about them, do not be curious, and do not touch them in any way!"
With that, he was the first to step out of the elevator, bathing in the bright light of the library.
The path between the elevator and the library appeared unobstructed, but as he stepped forward, a ripple-like pattern spread through the air, as if he were plunging into water.
The moment Professor Fernando landed, his expression changed slightly. He frowned and warned in a low voice:
"The Spiritual Contamination is strong. Everyone, be careful."
But since they had already come this far, no one present was about to back down. The three Bald Mages followed closely behind the professor and stepped inside.
They were followed by the other lecturers, and then the students, who all exited the elevator one after another.
Lloyd, however, acted out of character and remained behind, the last one in the elevator.
"Hm? Star student, you scared to come down?"
The student who was second to last glanced back at him, asking with amusement.
Lloyd shot him a speechless look and retorted irritably:
"Are you an idiot? Or have you just never been in a car before? Have you ever seen a driver get out before the vehicle is parked?"
"You..."
The other student was so thoroughly shut down by Lloyd’s comeback that he couldn’t say a word. He could only glare, puffing his cheeks in anger, before stepping out.
The moment he landed, his legs went weak, and he broke into a violent coughing fit, clearly unaccustomed to the sudden increase in Spiritual Contamination outside.
Lloyd, for his part, was quite eager to see just how intense the Spiritual Contamination outside really was.
But first, he dutifully adjusted the elevator’s status, ensuring it maintained its connection to the Space Pocket Watch. He then anchored it nearby, and only after confirming the elevator was ’on call’ did he eagerly step out.
[Ding! Madness Value +20]
[Ding! Madness Value +20]
’Huh? That’s it?’
’I thought it was another bonus XP event, but this is all I get?’
Lloyd couldn’t help but feel deeply disappointed.
However, he glanced at the upper-right corner of his vision and saw a string of numbers jumping back and forth between 100 and 50.
’Looks like that display isn’t accurate. I’ll trust the panel’s data instead.’
Lloyd thought to himself. He then raised the Magic Pattern Spatial Compass, scanned the surroundings, and called out a warning:
"Space is relatively stable for now, but there might be fluctuations later, so you’d better not go too far."
Professor Fernando, who was in the process of leading the three Bald Mages and the engineer deeper into the library, couldn’t help but pause. He turned and nodded at Lloyd before signaling for the three Mages to follow him as he continued toward the library’s depths.
With that, Lloyd had little else to do. He just needed to maintain his surveillance and wait to operate the elevator to take everyone back.
In contrast, the other students were fighting through the discomfort caused by the Spiritual Contamination, beginning to set up the Orbit under the guidance of the two history lecturers.
