Xuan slept, which surprised him, and woke clear-headed, which surprised him more, and by the time the light came up grey at the shutters he was sitting cross-legged in the middle of the locked room with the Shop open behind his eyes and Mira already awake and businesslike.

[ Good, you’re rested. Mostly. Rested enough. ] She was brisk this morning, the shopkeeper’s version of her, the one that meant business. [ Ground rules. You’ve got two hundred and fifty-one thousand points and change. We are not spending it to zero, because a man with nothing in reserve is a man who can’t answer a surprise, and you of all people know how much you hate surprises. So we spend most of it, we spend it well, and we keep a cushion. Agreed?]

’Agreed. You’re the one who taught me to always keep a card in hand.’

[ I did. One of my better lessons. Now. What do we buy first?]

’The big one,’ Xuan said. ’The reason we’re doing any of this. Show me what it costs to become a Golden Core cultivator.’

[ It doesn’t cost a thing to become one. ] Mira surfaced a listing, dense with detail. [ That part you do yourself, with a body and a will and a bottleneck that kills roughly one cultivator in three who reaches it. What this buys is the map through the bottleneck. A method. The difference between walking into the dark and walking into the dark holding a lamp somebody drew for you.]

Xuan read it. It was a breakthrough method for the leap from Foundation to Golden Core, and it was thorough in a way the cultivation of his whole life had never once been able to afford: every stage of the passage laid out, every failure point named, every warning sign a body gave before it tore itself apart trying to hold a core it wasn’t ready for.

’Eighty thousand,’ he said.

[ For a one-in-three killer turned into a checklist? Bargain. ] A beat. [ And it gets better, because I had it pull a version keyed to your particular disaster. Read the margins.]

He read the margins. Threaded all through the method were annotations he didn’t have a word for, adjustments, a whole alternate route that assumed a specific, unusual flaw in the cultivator attempting it.

’It’s built around the scar,’ he said slowly.

[ Yes. The standard method routes core-formation straight through the channel you burned out, which for you would be a very short and very fatal afternoon. This one goes around it. Treats your ruined channel as ground to build over instead of a road to drive down.] Genuine approval under the dryness. [ You said you wanted to build the man you actually are and build him well. This is the blueprint for exactly that. Buy it.]

’Buying it.’

The number ticked down, and it didn’t hurt the way he’d braced for. It felt, if anything, like the first honest thing he’d ever been able to spend on himself.

’Right,’ Xuan said, and let himself enjoy the next part, because he’d been eyeing it since the tier opened. ’Now something for me. Sword arts. Show me the beautiful ones.’

[ Oh, now we’re having fun. ] He could hear the grin in it. [ You’ve spent your whole life with a sword that eats people and a handful of grim little forms to feed it. Effective. Ugly. Very you. Let’s get you something that isn’t only a better way to open a man up. Here.]

She surfaced it, and Xuan stopped breathing for a second, because it was gorgeous.

’What is that.’

[ Plum Blossom Sword. Nineteen forms. ] Reverence now, real, under the sales pitch. [ It’s the kind of art whole legendary schools get built on top of. The strikes bloom, Xuan. Petals of sword-light, dozens of them at once, and every last one is a real edge, and the man across from you can’t tell the killing petal from the scenery until it’s already opened him. Beautiful and a lie and lethal, all in the same breath. It’s the most elegant thing on this shelf.]

’It’s showy.’ But he was already in love with it and they both knew it.

[ It is gloriously, unapologetically showy, and here’s why it’s clever and not just pretty. It’s pure technique. It leans on skill and control and reading your opponent, not on raw channel-power, which means it doesn’t touch your scar. You could throw all nineteen forms and never once ask the burned road to carry a thing.] A pause. [ You wanted options that don’t depend on the broken part of you. Here’s a hundred of them, and they look like falling flowers.]

’Price.’

[ Sixty-five thousand. Founding-a-school material for the cost of a decent estate. And I’ll be honest with you, one day, somewhere, you’re going to teach this to people, and they are going to name a mountain after it.]

’You’ve thought about this.’

[ I think about everything. Buy the flowers, Xuan.]

He bought the flowers.

’One more art,’ he said. ’And this one’s not for me, exactly. It’s for a hole in what I can do.’

[ Go on. I’m curious which hole. You’ve got a few.]

’Poison.’ He’d been turning it over since the war. ’Somebody comes at me with real toxin, corrosive qi, a blade that rots what it touches, and every grim efficient form I own is worth nothing, because you can’t out-muscle a poison. I’ve been lucky nobody serious tried it. I’d rather not keep relying on lucky.’

[ Huh. ] Mira sounded pleased, and a little caught out, the way she did on the rare occasions he got a step ahead of her. [ That’s good threat-assessment. Most people your age spend on the thing that makes them hit harder. You’re spending on the thing that stops you dying to a discipline you don’t understand. Here.]

She surfaced it, and it was as ugly as the plum blossoms had been lovely, and he liked it at once for entirely different reasons.

[ Venom Serpent Sword. Toxicology with an edge on it. Poisoned sword-qi, corrosion, blade-work built to deliver venom and to survive it both. Learn this and a poison user stops being your death and starts being a fair fight. It’ll teach you to read the stuff too, which is half of it, because most people die to poison for the simple reason that they never see it coming.]

’Fifty thousand.’

[ Cheap, for never dying to a thing you can’t punch. ] A beat, and the dry amusement crept back in. [ Also, purely as an aside, and file this wherever you file things you’ll pretend you never heard: the world is not short of dangerous women who’ve made poison their whole art. A man who understands it tends to get along with that sort a great deal better than a man who flinches at it. Just something to keep in the back of your mind. For the future. No particular reason.]

’What’s that supposed to mean.’

[ Nothing at all. Buy the serpent.]

He bought the serpent, and chose not to chase whatever she’d meant, because chasing Mira’s asides was a reliable way to lose an afternoon.

’Last thing,’ Xuan said. ’The scar. The breakthrough method handles it for the crossing, but I need it handled for every day. For fighting. I’m not walking around with a dead road in me and just praying I never reach for the wrong power at the wrong second.’

[ Good instinct, and I’ve already got the thing. Small, cheap, unglamorous, worth more to you than any of the flashy purchases combined. ] She surfaced a last listing, spare and technical. [ A circulation method. It re-teaches your qi to move around the burned channel instead of into it, at reflex level, so you don’t have to think about it mid-fight, which is exactly when you wouldn’t have the time to. It won’t hand you the ceiling back. Nothing hands you the ceiling back. But it turns the scar from a trap you could fall into under pressure into a door you keep shut without even noticing.]

’Thirty thousand.’

[ Thirty thousand to never accidentally kill yourself reaching for a power that isn’t there anymore. Frankly I’d have let you pay double.] A beat. [ Buy it, and we’re done, and then, Xuan, you are going to be broke again, and I want you to notice how good broke feels this time around.]

He bought it. The number ticked down to a figure that would have been a fortune to the man he’d been a month ago and was a modest cushion to the man he was now, and Xuan sat in the quiet of the locked room and felt the weight of what he’d just bought settle over him.

’Look at us,’ he said. ’A quarter of a million points this morning. A modest cushion by lunch.’

[ And worth every point of it. Take stock. You walked in here a Foundation cultivator with one grim sword, a battle-ender that flattens you every time you swing it, and a hole in your chest. You walk out with a map through the bottleneck built around your exact wound, a sword art beautiful enough to found a legend on, an answer to the one thing that could have killed you without a fight, and a way to carry power that doesn’t run through the ruined part of you. You didn’t buy a bigger copy of the old you. You bought a whole new one, and you bought it honest.]

’Now I just have to learn all of it.’

[ Now you just have to learn all of it. Which you’ll do in this room, quietly, while an empire assures each other the young Skyedge lord is resting. And once you’ve got the arts under your hands and the method under your skin, there’s still that pill I told you to leave alone.]

’The reward pill.’

[ Yup. ] And there it was again, that faint edge in her, the thing she still wouldn’t quite say. [ We’ll get to it. One mountain at a time. Learn the flowers and the serpent first. Get strong the ordinary way, the way you can explain to a physician with a straight face. And then we’ll open the thing I’ve got a feeling about, and find out together whether the feeling was worth having.]

Xuan settled his hands on his knees, and closed his eyes, and let the locked room and the quiet and the long work ahead fold in around a man who was, for once, precisely where he wanted to be. He had techniques to learn, and the time to learn them in, and for the first time in longer than he could name, nobody was going to die if he stopped to take a breath.

He took the breath. Then he got to work.
