Xuan found himself a room with a very good door, because when Mira asked twice for a thing like that, you gave it to her without arguing.

It sat deeper in the guest wing, a meditation chamber with stone walls thick enough to keep a war out, and once he’d barred it he settled in the middle of the floor and finally let her open the last thing the coronation had handed him.

The pill lay in his palm, small and unremarkable, the way the most dangerous things usually are.

’All right. You’ve been sitting on this since it dropped, and you wanted the good door. So tell me. What did I actually win?’

[ Give me a moment. I’m reading it properly, now that we’re somewhere I don’t mind you convulsing on the floor.] A pause, and he felt her attention narrow down onto the thing in his hand, careful and thorough, and then he felt her go very still. [ ...Oh. Oh, that’s what it is.]

’That is not a reassuring noise.’

[ It’s a good noise. I promise it’s a good noise, I just need a second to appreciate the joke the universe is telling.] When she came back, her voice held something he rarely heard from her, something close to wonder. [ Xuan. This is a physique enhancer. A real one, a proper one, the kind that doesn’t fine-tune a body so much as rewrite what it fundamentally is. And it isn’t keyed to just any physique. It’s keyed to yours. To the Sword Absolute Physique.]

Xuan went still himself, then.

He knew that name. He’d carried it his whole life and never once gotten to use it. It was the thing buried under the ruin the Fourth Prince had made of him. It was the reason for all of it.

’That’s the thing he cursed,’ he said slowly. ’When I was a child. That’s why he did it. The Withered Meridian Curse, the crippled years, the whole of it. He looked at a baby with the Sword Absolute Physique and decided to strangle it in the cradle before it grew into whatever it was that scared him.’

[ That’s the thing he cursed, ] Mira agreed, quietly. [ He spent a piece of twenty years and a curse most people never survive making certain this exact physique never woke up. And it turns out the reward for surviving him, for beating him, for putting him in a box he’s going to sit in for a very long time, is a pill that does the one thing he was most afraid of in all the world.] A beat. [ It wakes it up. All the way up. The thing he tried to kill in you is about to bloom, Xuan, and he’s sealed under a hill where he can’t do a single thing but feel it happen.]

Xuan looked at the small, plain pill in his palm for a long moment.

’He’s going to hate this,’ he said. ’Wherever the sealed part of him can still think, he’s going to feel the exact thing he spent his life preventing happening anyway, because of a war he lost.’ A slow, grim smile pulled at him. ’I’ve had a lot of reasons to want to get stronger. This one might be my favorite.’

[ Then stop admiring it and eat it. Lie down first. This is going to be a lot.]

He lay back on the cold stone, put the pill on his tongue, and swallowed the thing the Fourth Prince had feared more than anything in the world.

For a moment, nothing.

Then his whole body caught fire from the inside.

It wasn’t the tearing agony of the scar. That had been wrong, a body breaking. This was almost the opposite, and somehow that made it harder to bear, because it was a body being remade, every fiber of him lit up and rebuilt at once, and there is no comfortable way to feel your own flesh being told it was made incorrectly, and here, this is the corrected version, hold still.

His bones, his blood, the deep architecture of his muscle, all of it burned and reformed, denser, truer, more itself, as the physique that had lain dormant and half-strangled under a lifetime of damage finally got the fuel it had been starved of and did what it had always been meant to do.

He didn’t scream. It was close, but he didn’t, partly because his jaw had locked and partly out of pure stubbornness, and Mira stayed with him through all of it, a steady presence at the edge of the fire, not saying much, only there, the way you stay beside someone through a thing you can’t take off them.

When it finally ebbed, and he could feel his own edges again, Xuan lay on the stone and took stock of a body that was not the one he’d lain down in.

He was stronger. That was the crude word for it, and it was true, and it undersold the thing badly. It wasn’t that he could lift more, though he could. It was that his whole body had become, somehow, more of a sword. Every part of him hummed with an affinity for the blade that had always been there in flashes and was now simply what he was made from, bone-deep and permanent, a swordsman’s body in the most literal sense the words would carry. When he thought of Marrow Dragon in its sheath across the room, he could feel the pull of it, closer and cleaner than it had ever been.

And under all of that, something else was moving, something Mira caught before he did.

[ Xuan. ] Her voice had gone bright with interest. [ It’s not only your body. Look at your foundation. Look at your cultivation.]

He looked inward, and understood what she meant, and it stole his breath a second time.

His cultivation was surging. The enhanced physique hadn’t just remade his flesh, it had hauled his whole foundation up behind it, as though a body this fine simply refused to let his realm lag so far below it. The Foundation ground he hadn’t yet crossed was falling away under him, stage giving up after stage without a fight, his base scrambling to catch a body that had abruptly become far too good for it. He could feel himself rising toward the peak of the realm, toward the very threshold of the great transformation, faster than any orthodox cultivation could ever have dragged him.

’It’s pulling me up,’ he said, dazed. ’The physique. It’s pulling my whole realm up with it.’

[ Because a sword this good doesn’t sit in a cheap sheath. Your body just became a peak cultivator’s and then some, and your foundation is falling over itself trying not to embarrass it.] He could hear the grin come back into her. [ You wanted to be ready for the crossing. Xuan, you didn’t just get ready. You got launched at it.]

But the part that made him laugh out loud, alone on the floor of a locked stone room, was smaller than any of that, and better.

He stood. His legs took his weight like they’d been waiting all his life to be asked. And on an impulse he couldn’t have explained, he called Marrow Dragon across the room into his hand and stepped up onto the flat of the blade the way he’d watched cultivators do it since he was a boy, the way that had always sat a stage or two out of his reach.

The sword held him.

It lifted, qi streaming off it in a steady pour, and Xuan rose off the floor of the chamber on the flat of his own blade, hovering, unsteady, grinning like a fool.

’I’m flying,’ he said. ’Mira. I’m actually flying. I shouldn’t be able to do this yet. This is a whole stage above where I’ve got any business being.’

[ You’ve got the body of a cultivator well past the flight threshold now, and it’s the body that does the flying, not the paperwork of your realm. ] Fondness, unhidden, under the dry delivery. [ Enjoy it. You spent your entire childhood watching other people lift off and set down while you were stuck in the mud coughing up a curse. Go on. Get some height. You earned the sky.]

Xuan flew a slow, wobbling circle around the inside of the sealed chamber, low and careful and completely delighted, a man who’d been told his whole life he would never leave the ground, doing precisely the thing he’d been told he would never do, in a locked room, where no one could see, with the only witness a voice nobody else knew was there.

It was, he thought, a strange kind of private triumph. But it was his.

When he finally set down, breathing hard, his body still ringing with the new strength of it, he could feel the truth of what Mira had said sitting under everything. He was at the threshold now. The peak of Foundation, the edge of the great transformation, close enough to reach out and put a hand on, a body remade and a foundation hauled up to match it and a road to Golden Core already studied and mapped and routed clean around his scar.

’One more step,’ he said quietly, turning the sword in his hand. ’That’s all that’s left. One more step, and I stop being a Foundation cultivator for good.’

[ And this one’s the big one, Xuan. The realm change. The heavens send three bolts down to decide whether you’re worthy of a core, and you don’t get to buy your way past that part, or route around it, or out-think it. You stand under the lightning and you take it, and either your core forms or it doesn’t.] A beat, and the warmth held under the seriousness. [ But if there was ever a body built to stand under that particular sky and not break, it’s the one you’re sitting in right now. Rest. Recover. And when you’re ready, we go up and meet the lightning.]
