Limitless Evolution As a Snake

Chapter 342: Date with Lyra

  • Next Chapter

My date with Lyra began with a ride operator explaining that couples received a discount, then looking at me as if he needed to decide whether I counted as luggage.

I let him struggle while Lyra bought two tickets. The floating garden sat above the market on slow moving platforms, each carrying benches, flower boxes, and enough railings to prevent romantic idiots from becoming a public falling hazard.

"He gets a seat," she said, accepting the tickets. "If he starts charging you for the view, you can complain afterward."

"I had been considering a premium experience, but I respected your commitment to affordable romance."

Her hand settled against my length as we boarded. I stayed at my normal size and spread along the padded bench, leaving room for her instead of making an entrance that required traffic management.

The market lights moved beneath us while the platform climbed. For once, nobody wanted a meeting, a rescue, or a sample of whatever disgusting plan Old Mate had invented during breakfast.

[System: Look at you, mate, out with a beautiful woman and not one arrest in progress. Keep this up and somebody’ll ask whether you’ve considered joining a bloody book club.]

You could take ten minutes off before I tested whether koalas enjoyed being ignored.

He looked offended, poured himself another drink, and began judging the other couples instead.

Lyra showed me the small bag she had brought. It contained lunch, a folded cloth, and a cheap wooden puzzle shaped like a snake trying to escape a basket.

"I thought you could manage one afternoon where the only trap was something I bought you," she said.

I tried the puzzle with my tail, immediately wedged it tighter, and told her the manufacturer had displayed an ugly prejudice against working reptiles.

She solved it in three movements, then handed it back without the smug expression I would absolutely have used.

"That was an indecent display of competence, sweetheart, and I needed you to know it had consequences for my concentration."

"Then I should show you what happens when I open the lunch bag."

I loved her for saying it like a threat.

We ate while she told me about a quiet morning she wanted once the casino no longer consumed every spare hour. Not a grand future with a different version of me, just breakfast outside and enough time to finish something without a visitor arriving to demand her attention.

I had given her plenty of excitement. I wasn’t sure how often I had given her an afternoon that belonged to her.

"Come to Ami with us for a while," I said. "You and Cherry could let the relief staff cover the desks, and we could make the next stupid idea a trip we actually chose together."

She asked whether I meant it before agreeing. I told her I did, then asked what she wanted to do first.

"Go somewhere new with you," she said. "I don’t want every story afterward to be something I watched through a phone."

A gust caught the corner of our cloth before I could answer. I trapped it with my tail, shifted my weight, and sent the wooden puzzle skittering toward a drain at the platform edge.

Lyra caught it with Mine Now before it disappeared, bringing it into clear space against her palm. The forty-five-second timer began on her use, and she held up the puzzle with a look that suggested she had rescued the more sensible snake.

[System: She’s saved you from a drain, mate, and she hasn’t even started the adventure. Marry the woman before somebody else notices the level of roadside assistance on offer.]

I could appreciate her without turning the afternoon into an emergency paperwork event.

The operator announced the platform would pause above the market for photographs. A nearby couple mistook us for part of an attraction and asked whether Lyra had rented me.

She looked at me, then at the woman. "No, but the maintenance costs have been surprising."

I made my fins glow softly, providing the picture they wanted while quietly stealing the attention back from the puzzle. Lyra laughed and leaned close enough for me to rest my head against her shoulder without pulling at the sore skin beneath my bandage.

She asked the nearby couple to take our picture in return, then chose the one where I was looking at her instead of the camera. I started explaining that the light had distracted me, but she kept smiling until I admitted the light had very little to do with it.

When we reached the ground, she chose a little dessert stall and fed me the first bite before taking the second for herself. I remembered the day more clearly because nothing exploded during it.

Back at the casino, Cherry and Bridget were arguing cheerfully over dinner spices. Bridget had her own place at the counter and one of Cherry’s spare aprons, which carried a warning about kissing the cook.

"That apron seemed legally ambitious," I told her, earning three different looks and no useful defense.

Lyra caught my attention before I could make the joke worse. She wanted the rest of the evening alone with me, and the simple confidence in how she asked made my thoughts considerably less useful.

We went upstairs after dinner. She put the puzzle beside the bed, told me I could stop trying to win the afternoon, and kissed me until I finally managed it.

The door closed on the noise below, leaving the night to us.

Later, I lay beside her while she traced an idle line along an uninjured patch of my body. The familiar replenishment had been needed and completed, and Old Mate quietly credited five hundred EXP without treating our evening like a paid performance.

Eighteen thousand five hundred, with three hundred ten IP unchanged, and I wanted another hour before thinking about either number.

Lyra opened Cherry’s message when her phone lit up. Our trip arrangements had been accepted, but the message included a photograph from the luggage counter downstairs.

Someone had delivered a pink riding harness addressed to me, with Hansen’s initials beside the words FIRST TEST PASSENGER.
