Adelyn remembered Ford.

She wasn’t hearing his name for the first time. She knew he was the man who usually drove Dylan around.

But hearing Eira mention him in their conversation still confused her.

She stared at the little girl, waiting for her to explain.

Little Eira blinked her eyes at her once before slowly saying, "It was Uncle Ford who checked on your condition last night. And Eira didn’t hear him say that if Mama’s temperature went down, then her wound would heal too."

The furrow between Adelyn’s brows deepened.

For a second, she couldn’t quite understand what the little girl meant.

But when she thought about it again, something finally clicked.

"You mean it was Ford who came to check on me?"

Eira paused for a second before nodding.

"Dada asked Uncle Ford to come and look at you."

Confusion flickered through Adelyn’s eyes again.

Wasn’t Ford the driver?

Why would he come to check on her?

Just as she was thinking about it, the corner of her eye caught a familiar silhouette standing a short distance away.

Adelyn raised her gaze.

And there he was.

Dylan was standing there, watching her.

She didn’t know when he came down. But the way he was looking at her made him look like he had been there for quite a while now.

She met his gaze, and for a brief second, his gaze made her feel as though she had been caught red-handed.

But then she thought about it again.

What was she even talking about?

There had to be a crime for someone to be caught red-handed, right?

And she hadn’t done anything wrong. So what was there to feel guilty about?

Dylan walked toward them, and Adelyn looked at him, suddenly unsure how she should explain her thoughts —or, more importantly, how she should ask him about Ford.

Just when she was trying to figure out what to say—

His deep, magnetic voice reached her.

"Ford previously served in the military. And he knows medicine."

Adelyn blinked.

"He knows medicine?"

The quiet surprise in her voice lasted only a moment before she realized something.

She hadn’t even needed to ask him. He had already explained everything on his own. It only meant he had heard it all and had even read her confusion earlier.

Dylan hummed softly.

"After retiring, he came to work for me. He doesn’t just drive me around. He’s also the one who looks after my health."

"Your health?"

Adelyn immediately caught onto those words.

"Have you not been well?"

She had never actually seen him sick.

But there had been times when his complexion looked unusually pale, and for some reason, it had always made her feel as though he were silently suffering from something she couldn’t see.

And now that she had heard him mention it, she was kind of concerned. She didn’t quite realize why.

But she was.

Has he been really sick?

Is that why Ford was always accompanying him?

Her gaze lingered on Dylan.

The more she looked at him, the deeper her eyes became.

However, Dylan didn’t answer her question.

He simply stared at her for a long moment before finally saying, "I need to head to the company. If you need anything, let Mabel know."

Adelyn was curious to know more about his health. But when he clearly refused to reveal anything more, she didn’t press him.

Nodding, she replied, "Okay. I will."

Dylan gave her a brief nod and turned to leave. However, after taking only one step, he suddenly paused.

He turned his head and looked back over his shoulder.

"And yes," he began, "I have already informed your manager. You won’t have to go out today. Take your time and rest at home."

With that said, he didn’t stay another second.

He resumed walking and headed straight out.

Behind him, Adelyn remained slightly dumbfounded.

Wait ...

What did he just say?

He had informed her manager?

Her pupils dilated.

Does he mean Sister Freya?

How exactly did he inform her?

He wouldn’t have actually called her and told her himself, would he?

The thought alone made Adelyn’s expression turn strange.

Just as she was still reeling from that shock, a gentle tug on her sleeve drew her attention.

"Mama, Eira is done."

Adelyn looked down at the little girl.

She was about to say something when another voice suddenly interrupted her.

"You guys already finished breakfast?"

Karl came gliding over and stopped beside the table.

"Since when did all of you start eating so early?"

He had come all the way here hoping to have breakfast with them.

Now that they had already finished—

Did that mean he had to leave without breakfast?

Karl looked at Adelyn with a pitiful expression.

"Sister-in-law, you didn’t save anything for me?"

Adelyn stared at him before crossing her arms over her chest.

"I remember the last time you didn’t fall on your head. How come you’re still having such messy thoughts?"

"Messy thoughts?"

Karl repeated her words, scratching his head lightly.

"What are you saying, Sister-in-law? My thoughts aren’t messy at all."

"Really?" Adelyn arched her brows as though genuinely surprised.

"Then how come you’re already talking such nonsense so early in the morning? Since when did I take responsibility for saving food for you? And why would I even do that?"

"Because I’m your dearest brother-in-law. You love me, don’t you?"

Karl asked it with such shameless confidence that Adelyn was rendered speechless.

She simply stared at him.

This man ...

Did he even have a shred of shame?

"Did you really not save me anything?" Karl asked again, blinking his eyes at her like a pitiful puppy.

Adelyn couldn’t bear to look at that annoying expression any longer.

So, closing her eyes for a moment, she quickly said, "Check if there’s anything left in the bowl. Have it if you aren’t disgusted by eating leftovers."

Karl didn’t seem to find anything wrong with that arrangement.

"What do you mean, disgusted? You’re my sister-in-law, and the others are my own brother and niece. I won’t even mind eating what’s left in your bowl. This little bit of leftover food is nothing."

As he spoke, he had already served himself the remaining porridge from the large bowl.

Then, without the slightest hesitation, he sat down and began gobbling it down.

Adelyn watched him, completely at a loss for how she was supposed to react.

This guy was too ...

Brazen.

Far too brazen.

"This is a little bland," Karl commented after swallowing another mouthful.

He paused and looked toward Adelyn.

"Sister-in-law, do you like such bland flavors?"

Adelyn parted her lips.

But before she could answer, Eira spoke from beside her. A small frown appeared between the little girl’s brows.

"Mama doesn’t like bland flavors."

Karl immediately looked toward her.

Eira continued seriously, "But because Mama is sick, Mama can only have bland food."

Karl halted.

His spoon remained suspended for a moment.

Then—

He suddenly shot to his feet.

"Sister-in-law, you’re sick?"

His expression changed dramatically.

"What happened to you?"

Leaving his chair, he was about to rush to her side, but Adelyn stopped him just in time.

"Stay there if you’re not looking to get kicked out." Her finger pointed at the chair Karl had abandoned.
