Chapter 3965: Chapter 3965: In His Words, Nie Qingru Became a Good Person

"Also, Tattoo Arm and the others rushed back an hour ago. He asked me to tell you we didn’t catch Di Xicheng. That guy slipped away again."

Qiao Nian’s eyes grew darker at that, she kept feeling that this information on Di Xicheng had come a little too ’coincidentally’. Even though she still hadn’t grasped any evidence to prove that this coincidence was man‑made, Qiao Nian’s sixth sense was screaming at her that there was probably something fishy behind it.

"Right, which hospital are you and Young Master Ye at?" Guan Yan paused and said, "Ji Lin and Qin Si both want to come over to see you."

"Mm."

Qiao Nian gave her a hospital address.

After Guan Yan received it, she immediately said, "I’ll hand over the clean‑up work with Tattoo Arm, then I’ll come over later."

"Okay."

Qiao Nian hung up, walked to the window and glanced at the dawn breaking outside. Lowering her eyes, she thought for a while, then called back the number that had stubbornly rung her dozens of times without being answered.

...

On the other side.

Shadow had waited all night, and Qiao Nian hadn’t picked up his call once.

With a jittery, uneasy heart, he first tried to get in touch with what was left of the reclusive family’s forces in the illegal zone, and had a doctor briefly treat his rib injury.

Then he didn’t even spare himself a minute’s rest, rushing people out nonstop to inquire about the situation at the manor, while trying to get in contact with Lu Zhi to ask him for help.

On Tian Chen’s end, Lu Zhi ignored him, but Lu Zhi’s aide Jian Jin found a moment in between to take his call, and her tone was downright arrogant and rude.

Jian Jin clearly stated that Tian Chen would no longer involve itself in this matter, and that Shadow and the reclusive family would have to handle it themselves.

Shadow hung up the phone, seething at how she’d turned her face and refused to recognize him, but they were the ones under someone else’s roof, they had no choice but to bow their heads.

No matter how angry he was that Lu Zhi would only do half the job and then just pull out.

Shadow also knew very well that in the illegal zone’s territory, Lu Zhi was basically heaven’s law and king’s decree. Aside from condemning him for being irresponsible, Shadow had absolutely no way to deal with Lu Zhi and Tian Chen!

He could only pin his hopes on Old Xue, who was far away on Continent M...

Just as he was anxiously waiting for news from Old Xue, the phone that hadn’t received a single call all night suddenly lit up.

"Thump, thump!"

Shadow’s heartbeat sped up; he lunged forward, grabbed the phone and answered it immediately. He didn’t even see the incoming number clearly before he was already certain who it was.

"Miss Qiao."

This time his tone was much more polite, the former aloofness gone, his attitude sincere and humble: "You finally called back."

He figured that Qiao Nian was willing to return this call mostly because she still held some lingering affection for the empress, it was just that with Ji Qing’s matter between them, Qiao Nian refused to bow her head to the empress.

So before the girl could speak, he rushed to take the initiative and said to Qiao Nian, "The empress has actually always felt guilty toward the young lady. It’s just that her nature has been tough her whole life, it’s hard for her to lower her head and reflect on things that have already happened. But from the way she’s spared you time and time again, you can see she isn’t as disgusted with you as she seems on the surface, she just can’t bring herself to reconcile with you."

The other end didn’t interrupt him.

Shadow took a deep breath, feeling more confident, and his voice grew increasingly calm and smooth: "Maybe from your point of view, the empress has been too cold‑blooded and ruthless toward the young lady, that she’s a purely self‑serving person who could even sacrifice her own daughter for profit. But that’s not the truth, she had no choice! From the very beginning she was just like you—she never thought about getting involved in the reclusive family’s interests, much less about climbing higher."
