Yami smiled looking at Devara who was just a moment ago was discussing seriously with others and just when he saw her, he sent them away to spend time with her.
"She sent me a little portion, and I thought I would share some with you."
"Some?"
Devara repeated, glancing at her with mock suspicion.
"That is a very interesting choice of words, Yami. Are you certain you are not concealing something from me?"
"Why would I do that?"
she asked innocently.
Devara gave her a look that clearly conveyed how little he believed that innocent expression.
Nevertheless, he reached towards the parcel and broke off a small piece of the sweet.
Popping it into his mouth, he began chewing, and within moments his expression changed dramatically.
His eyes widened, his brows rose, and he turned towards Yami with the look of a man who had just discovered a treasure far more valuable than anything lying within the royal treasury.
Yami watched his reaction with growing amusement.
"Well?" she asked, trying unsuccessfully to hide her smile.
"Is it good?"
Devara looked down at the remaining sweet, then back at her.
"Good?" he repeated.
"Yami, this is extraordinary! What exactly has your mother put into it? The texture, the flavour, the way everything comes together..."
He paused, taking another appreciative breath as though trying to identify every ingredient.
"I have eaten sweets prepared by the finest cooks in several kingdoms, but this is something else entirely."
Yami finally burst into laughter.
"Of course you would say that. You have barely swallowed the first piece, and you are already preparing to interrogate the recipe out of me."
"I am merely appreciating the work of a talented cook,"
Devara replied with great dignity.
"Surely there is nothing wrong with that."
"Nothing at all," Yami agreed, her smile widening.
"Which is why I am glad I brought only a small portion with me."
Devara’s eyes immediately shifted towards the parcel.
"Only a small portion?"
Yami nodded, looking entirely too pleased with herself.
"Yes. I left the larger portion somewhere safe before coming here."
Devara stared at her for a moment before letting out a disbelieving laugh.
"You mean to tell me that you brought me a tiny piece of this wonderful sweet while hiding the rest somewhere I cannot find it?"
"I never said I was bringing you the entire thing,"
Yami pointed out, her tone becoming playfully defensive.
"I said I would share some with you. And I have kept my promise, haven’t I?"
Devara shook his head, chuckling as he slipped an arm around her waist and gently drew her closer.
Yami settled against his side without resistance, looking up at him with the satisfied expression of someone who had successfully anticipated her husband’s behaviour.
"You know," Devara murmured,
"I have faced powerful asuras, endured years of training under my father, and spent considerable effort mastering divine techniques. Yet somehow, you and the other women in my family continue to find ways to defeat me without lifting a weapon."
"Perhaps the problem is that you are too easily distracted whenever food is involved," Yami suggested.
"That is a baseless accusation."
"Is it?" She raised an eyebrow.
"Then perhaps I should take the parcel away."
Devara immediately moved it out of her reach, prompting Yami to laugh again.
"Ah, so you admit that I am right!"
"I admit nothing,"
he replied, breaking off another tiny piece of the sweet.
"But I am beginning to suspect that your mother has deliberately created something that could bring kingdoms to their knees. If word of this reaches the wrong ears, I may have to establish a special security arrangement for her kitchen."
Yami covered her mouth, laughing at the absurdity of his suggestion.
"Please do not tell Mother that. She will either be offended that you think someone would steal her sweets or start preparing enough to feed your entire army."
Devara considered that possibility for a moment, then looked at her with renewed seriousness.
"On second thought, I may have to encourage her."
"Devara!"
He laughed, the sound carrying over the river as Yami playfully nudged his shoulder.
Then, noticing that a small piece of the sweet remained between his fingers, he turned towards her and held it out.
"Come here," he said affectionately.
"You brought this all the way here to share with me, so it would be rather unfair if I enjoyed most of it myself."
Yami smiled as she leaned forward and accepted the piece from his fingers, taking a small bite.
The sweetness lingered upon her tongue, and she looked at him with a pleased expression before resting her head against his shoulder.
For a while, neither of them spoke about Vrishasena, the Ashvamedha, or the possibility of war.
They simply sat together upon the ancient stone wall, sharing the sweet that Yami’s mother had sent and watching the sacred rivers flow beneath them.
Devara knew that the kingdom’s affairs would demand his attention again soon enough.
His ministers would return with reports, his commanders would prepare for every possibility, and the ruler of Vrishabhapura would eventually have to decide how he intended to respond to the challenge.
But for that brief moment, Devara was content to remain where he was, with his wife beside him and the taste of an extraordinary sweet lingering upon his tongue.
Then he glanced at the parcel again.
"Yami?"
"Hmm?"
"Where exactly did you hide the larger portion?"
Yami lifted her head from his shoulder and gave him a look of profound disappointment.
"Devara, you are impossible."
He grinned.
"And yet, you married me."
Mount Kailash...
Meanwhile, upon the sacred heights of Mount Kailash, where the snow-covered peaks gleamed beneath the celestial light and the divine Ganga flowed gracefully from Lord Shiva’s matted locks, three of the most powerful beings in existence had gathered for a discussion that concerned a rather unusual matter.
Lord Shiva sat upon his familiar seat, his trident resting beside him, while Lord Vishnu occupied a comfortable position nearby and Lord Brahma sat across from them, his four faces each carrying a slightly different expression of contemplation.
Ordinarily, a gathering of the Trimurtis would concern the balance of creation, the preservation of cosmic order, or some disturbance threatening the innumerable worlds under their respective jurisdictions.
This time, however, their discussion revolved around a promise made by Devara to Goddess Alakshmi.
A promise that would eventually take him beyond the boundaries of their own divine domains.
"Are we certain that the place Devara described belongs to the Egyptian pantheon?"
Brahma asked, stroking his beard thoughtfully with one hand.
"I have encountered references to several divine realms beyond our jurisdiction, but the description he gave of the Forty-Two Stars Bracelet was rather specific. An artefact associated with forty-two celestial powers, preserved within a world governed by an entirely different divine order, is hardly something one would encounter by accident."
Vishnu nodded.
"That is precisely why I believe his destination will be the realm of the Netjeru. When Devara described the artefact and the circumstances surrounding it, the details aligned with what we know of the Egyptian divine hierarchy."
"The Netjeru possess their own traditions, their own laws governing divine authority, and their own understanding of the balance between order and chaos. Their mythology is not simply another province of our creation that we can enter and manage as we please."
Shiva, who had been listening quietly, opened his eyes and regarded his companions.
"Which means that when Devara eventually travels there, he will be entering a domain where our authority does not automatically extend," he observed.
"We may possess considerable knowledge of the multiverse, but that does not give us the right to interfere with another pantheon’s affairs. If Devara intends to retrieve the bracelet for Alakshmi, he must understand the customs and circumstances of that world before making any decisions."
"That is what concerns me," Brahma replied.
"Devara is capable of extraordinary things, but his strength is not the issue here. He has a habit of involving himself in situations whenever he believes someone is being treated unfairly, and while that quality has earned him the affection of many beings, it can also lead him into unfamiliar territory without sufficient preparation."
Vishnu chuckled softly at the observation.
"Are you referring to the time he challenged an entire gathering simply because they objected to Alakshmi’s presence at his wedding?"
"I am referring to several occasions,"
Brahma corrected, giving Vishnu a pointed look.
"The wedding was merely one of the more memorable examples."
Shiva’s lips curved into a faint smile.
"You cannot blame the boy for having a conscience, Brahma. Besides, he made a promise to Alakshmi, and I know him well enough to understand that he will honour it. Once he has decided to help someone, persuading him to abandon the matter is considerably more difficult than persuading a mountain to move."
"That is precisely why we should make certain he knows what awaits him," Vishnu replied.
"We cannot simply send him into an unfamiliar divine realm and hope that his good intentions will be sufficient."
Brahma nodded in agreement.
"I have already considered that possibility. Fortunately, we are not entirely without information regarding the Netjeru. We have maintained certain channels of communication with other divine domains for a considerable time, and one of our agents is currently stationed within the Egyptian realm. He has been observing their affairs and reporting significant developments."
