The same divine authority that allowed it to unleash devastating weapons was being used to prevent those weapons from harming the soldiers Devara had sworn to protect.
It was not simply a matter of commanding the astra to attack one side instead of another.
It was the ability to understand what the weapon could accomplish, to define its purpose precisely, and to maintain control over its power even while it performed multiple tasks across an enormous battlefield.
Vrishasena had received the knowledge of the Narayana Astra from his guru.
Devara had received it directly from Lord Vishnu, who had also trained him to understand the responsibilities accompanying divine power.
For the first time, Vrishasena began to comprehend the full significance of that difference.
His eyes widened as another volley of celestial weapons emerged from Devara’s vortex.
The blue-radiant projectiles swept through the sky, neutralising the golden weapons directed towards the allied formations before descending upon his own soldiers.
The spectacle was magnificent, but to Vrishasena, every flash of light now carried the same dreadful message.
His greatest weapon was no longer providing the decisive advantage he had expected.
Instead, it was being matched and countered by an opponent who seemed capable of using the same divine power with far greater precision.
Sweat began forming along Vrishasena’s forehead despite the wind sweeping across his chariot.
He could feel the eyes of his commanders upon him, though none dared to speak openly about what they were witnessing.
They had seen their king unleash a weapon of extraordinary power, only to discover that Devara possessed the same astra and could wield it in a manner that threatened their entire army.
"How is he controlling it like that?"
one of the commanders finally asked, his voice strained with disbelief.
"Maharaja, his astra is neutralising every attack we launch while continuing to strike our formations. We cannot gain an advantage while that continues."
Vrishasena had no answer.
He looked towards Devara, who remained standing upon the Vajravyaghra Rath with Pinakodanda in his hand.
The king of Trivenivrata was not displaying the strain Vrishasena had expected from someone controlling such an immense force.
His posture remained steady, and his attention was fixed upon the battlefield, as though he were observing the movements of his army and ensuring that the divine weapon continued to fulfil its purpose.
There was no wild release of energy, no uncontrolled torrent of destruction. Even as the heavens rained weapons upon the battlefield, Devara appeared to be exercising deliberate restraint.
That realisation frightened Vrishasena more than the sheer scale of the attack.
The enormous vortex above Devara was already several times larger than the one he had summoned, yet Drona had observed that Devara had not drawn upon even a small fraction of Pinakodanda’s full potential.
The king of Trivenivrata was accomplishing all of this while carefully controlling the power at his disposal.
Vrishasena could not help wondering what would happen if Devara decided that restraint was no longer necessary.
Across the battlefield, Bhishma watched the celestial exchange with a solemn expression.
He understood that the balance of the war had shifted once again, and this time the change had come from a source that ordinary military tactics could not easily overcome.
Drona, meanwhile, had reached a similar conclusion.
"Remember this,"
he said to the commanders gathered nearby, his eyes still fixed upon the heavens.
"The strength of an astra is not measured solely by the destruction it can cause. Its true potential depends upon the knowledge and discipline of the warrior who wields it."
"Vrishasena possesses a weapon of immense power, but Devara understands how to direct that power towards a purpose. One has unleashed a divine weapon against his enemy. The other has made that weapon both a shield for his allies and a sword against his opponents."
Karna watched another golden projectile shatter beneath the interception of a blue-radiant weapon, his expression thoughtful.
"And that is why we are still standing here, despite the power Vrishasena has unleashed. Devara did not wait for the astra to strike before deciding how to defend us. He gave it its purpose from the beginning."
Ashwatthama’s gaze shifted towards the opposing army, where the soldiers were struggling to recover their formations.
"Then Vrishasena has made a serious mistake. He believed that possessing the same weapon would place him on equal terms with Devara, but he never considered that the difference between them might lie in what they understand about the power they possess."
Above them, the two vortices continued their extraordinary exchange, the golden and ocean-blue radiance illuminating the battlefield as weapons collided in the heavens.
Vrishasena’s astra continued its assault, but its attacks were intercepted again and again, while Devara’s manifestation maintained its defence and continued striking against the enemy.
The king of Vrishabhapura could only watch as the consequences of his decision unfolded before him.
He had invoked the Narayana Astra to destroy Devara’s army and force the alliance into submission.
In doing so, he had revealed the full extent of his own limitations to a man who possessed the same weapon, a far deeper understanding of its capabilities, and a divine bow whose potential remained largely untapped.
For the first time since he had inherited the throne of Vrishabhapura, Vrishasena found himself confronting an opponent whose strength could not be overcome merely by committing more soldiers, invoking a more powerful weapon, or demanding absolute obedience from those who served him.
And as sweat trickled down his temple, the king finally understood that the difference between his Narayana Astra and Devara’s was not the power of Narayana himself.
It was the difference between a man who had been taught how to unleash a divine weapon and a man whom the deity had trusted to wield it with understanding.
The situation on Vrishabhapura’s side quickly became desperate as the celestial weapons emerging from Devara’s vortex continued their relentless assault.
The commanders who had initially believed that their king’s Narayana Astra would overwhelm the allied army were now witnessing their own formations being targeted by an equally powerful divine weapon.
The golden projectiles released by Vrishasena’s astra were being intercepted before they could reach their intended targets, while the ocean-blue weapons continued descending towards his soldiers.
Realising that they could no longer depend upon their king’s astra to protect them, several Vrishabhapura commanders decided to intervene personally.
One after another, they invoked their own astras, directing their accumulated yogic energy towards the incoming weapons.
Some raised their bows towards the sky and released powerful mantras, while others summoned divine weapons through their palms, creating barriers of blazing energy above their formations.
Vrishasena himself joined them, unwilling to watch his army suffer without attempting to defend it.
A commander invoked the Varuna Astra, summoning enormous streams of water that rose into the air and formed a protective barrier above his soldiers.
Another called upon the Vayu Astra, creating powerful currents that diverted several incoming projectiles away from his formation.
Others employed Agni, Indra, and different celestial weapons, each attempting to intercept the attacks before they could reach the ground.
For a brief period, their efforts proved successful.
The incoming weapons collided with the defensive astras, producing brilliant flashes of light that illuminated the battlefield.
Some projectiles disintegrated upon striking the barriers, while others were diverted towards empty stretches of land, where they exploded with tremendous force.
The commanders who managed to protect their respective formations received cheers from the soldiers beneath them, who believed that the danger had finally begun to recede.
Vrishasena also succeeded in blocking several incoming attacks.
He invoked another astra, directing its energy towards a cluster of ocean-blue weapons descending upon his position.
The resulting collision produced a tremendous burst of light, and the projectiles vanished before they could strike his chariot or the soldiers surrounding him.
For a moment, the king felt a measure of relief.
However, that relief did not last long.
The weapons continued coming.
No matter how many projectiles were intercepted, more emerged from the enormous vortex above Devara.
Spears, arrows, discs, swords, and countless other celestial weapons continued descending from the clouds, each carrying a portion of the Narayana Astra’s power.
Some were intercepted by the commanders’ defensive astras, while others found their way through the gaps in the barriers and struck the formations below.
The commanders began to realise that they were fighting an enemy whose supply of weapons did not appear to diminish.
One of them looked upwards, his expression changing as another enormous volley emerged from the ocean-blue vortex.
"How many weapons does that astra possess?"
he exclaimed, struggling to understand what he was witnessing.
"We have already destroyed hundreds of them, yet the number descending from the sky has not decreased!"
Another commander, who had been maintaining a protective barrier over his soldiers, gritted his teeth as the incoming projectiles struck it repeatedly.
"Continue strengthening the barrier! Do not allow the weapons to reach the men beneath us!"
But even as he spoke, the surface of his defensive formation began trembling under the continuous assault.
What none of the commanders on Vrishasena’s side fully understood was the true nature of the Narayana Astra.
It was not merely a divine weapon that released a predetermined number of projectiles before exhausting its energy.
Its manifestation contained an extraordinary arsenal of weapons and astras, an almost immeasurable collection that could continue producing attacks as long as the invocation remained active.
