Marked by the Four Beast Lords After Transmigration

Chapter 224 — When the House Is Quiet

  • Next Chapter

The house stayed quieter after the road opened, though Hearthfang never managed complete silence once morning work began.

Voices traveled through the upper passage whenever someone crossed the turn. A pair of workers carried damp gravel downhill, their baskets scraping stone when they changed hands outside. Somewhere farther along the level, wood struck wood at an uneven pace. Water continued through the drainage channel beside the path, softer than it had been before breakfast but steady enough that Nia could hear it whenever the entrance screen shifted.

Inside, Shen rinsed the last breakfast cloth while Nia stood beside the preparation surface with one hip against the edge, sorting the dry cloths from the ones that needed another stretch near the hearth. Kael had gone from the eastern edge to the lower turn after releasing the walking route. He had sent one short message back with a worker: carts remained restricted until the soft outer section dried further.

Nia folded a square cloth and added it to the clean stack. Shen lifted the one he had just rinsed, checked both sides, and wrung the water from it without twisting the weave.

“You know those survive when I wring them normally.”

“They stretch.”

“They are kitchen cloths.”

Shen spread the cloth across the drying rail and smoothed one folded edge before leaving it alone. Nia watched him, smiled, and carried the clean stack to the shelf while he emptied the wash basin.

The water had cooled enough to carry outside. Shen lifted the basin before Nia could reach for one side.

“I can help.”

“You can move the smaller vessel from the entrance.”

Nia looked toward it. “That is considerably lighter.”

“Yes.”

He carried the basin out. Nia's rabbit ears angled after him before she took the smaller vessel anyway and moved it beside the water stand.

By the time Shen returned, she had opened the grain container they had used at breakfast. Enough remained for several meals. She closed the lid and turned toward him as he washed his hands again.

The pale hair at his nape had started slipping free of its tie.

“You're coming apart.”

His fingers paused beneath the water.

“Your hair.”

Shen finished rinsing, dried his hands, and reached up. One section had loosened enough to fall over his shoulder.

“It will hold until later.”

Nia looked from the loose strand to the carefully arranged drying cloth. “Sit down.”

His mouth softened slightly.

She pointed toward the stool near the hearth. “Go.”

Shen sat, and Nia moved behind him to gather his hair with both hands. It was heavier than it looked and smooth enough that the first section began sliding through her fingers before she collected the rest.

“You make this look easier.”

“I have practice.”

“On me.”

“Among other things.”

Nia separated the loose strands at his nape and drew them into the larger section. She had watched him manage his own hair often enough to know the basic tie, though her fingers lacked his speed. Outside, someone called that the eastern marker crew had finished clearing the upper gravel. A second voice answered from below that the cart line remained closed.

Neither sound pulled Shen away from the stool.

Nia brought the tie around once. His hand settled lightly against the outside of her calf, and her fingers slowed before she finished the second loop.

“Too tight?”

“No.”

She smoothed the hair beneath the tie and found one shorter strand loose near his ear. When she tucked it back, Shen turned his head enough for his cheek to brush the inside of her wrist. His mouth followed, warm against her pulse, and Nia left her hand against his cheek when he kissed the same place again.

Shen turned on the stool until one knee faced her. His hand moved from her calf to the back of her thigh, drawing her closer.

“You finished my hair.”

“I know.”

Nia stepped between his knees and bent to kiss him. One of Shen's arms came around her back while his other hand settled at her waist. Nia caught the front of his tunic and stayed there as the kiss deepened. The faint sweetness of the dried fruit he had eaten at breakfast lingered on his mouth.

She smiled against him before drawing back. “You ate another piece after I went for the cloths.”

“I did.”

“I knew you saved some.”

“There is still one in the bowl.”

Nia glanced toward the hearth, but Shen kissed her again before she decided whether she wanted it. Her hands slid into his hair and caught the tie she had just secured. She loosened it, worked it free, and closed it inside one palm as the pale length fell over his shoulders.

Shen's breath warmed her mouth. His tail crossed the floor behind her ankles and curled loosely around one calf while Nia moved closer between his knees. When the stool shifted against the stone, Shen steadied it with one foot and rose without taking his hands from her waist.

Nia tipped her face back. His mouth touched her forehead, then the edge of one rabbit ear. The shiver that ran through her sharpened when he kissed beneath it and moved lower along her neck.

“Shen.”

Nia pulled him back to her mouth and started toward the bedroom. His hand remained at her waist as he followed.

At the bedroom entrance, Nia set his hair tie on the low shelf beside the bed. Kael's side of the bedding had been pulled straighter before he left, but the lighter fur remained folded back near the foot, and one of Nia's sleeping wraps lay twisted where she had climbed out from beneath it that morning.

She sat on the edge and drew Shen between her knees.

His hair spilled forward when he bent to kiss her. His hands moved into her gathered curls without disturbing them while Nia pulled his tunic upward. Shen lifted his arms, let her free it, and came back down as soon as the cloth cleared his shoulders.

Nia spread her palms over his chest. When Shen reached for the front of her clothing, she caught his wrist and moved his hand to her waist instead.

His eyes lifted to hers.

Nia stood and loosened the clothing herself. Shen remained where she had left him, watching while she pushed the fabric away and stepped close again.

She kissed him and walked him backward until the backs of his legs touched the bed. Nia pressed her palm to his chest until he sat on the edge, then climbed onto his lap before he could reach for her again.

Shen's hands settled at her hips as she arranged herself astride him. His tail slid over the bedding and curled around her lower leg while his loose hair spread across his shoulders and the fur behind him.

Nia ran both hands through it and found the sensitive place at the back of his neck.

Shen inhaled sharply.

She rubbed her thumb there again. His fingers pressed more firmly into her hips, and the reaction made her smile against the corner of his mouth. When she stroked the same place a third time, Shen bent his head to her shoulder. His breath heated her skin before his mouth followed, kissing the curve where her neck met her shoulder while Nia continued to work her fingers slowly along his nape.

She shifted closer on his lap. Shen raised his head, and Nia kissed him again while one of his hands moved around her back. Her hips changed angle against him, and his hold changed with her, supporting the new position without interrupting her movement.

After several more kisses, Nia wanted the fuller pressure of his body rather than his mouth alone. She reached between them and guided him where she wanted him, then lowered herself carefully.

The first stretch caught her breath. Nia stopped with both hands resting against Shen's shoulders, and his palm traveled once along her side before settling at her waist. He waited while she breathed against his cheek and relaxed around the pressure.

When the tightness eased, Nia lowered herself farther.

Shen's eyes closed, and a low, rough sound left him as she settled completely onto his lap. The sound pleased her enough that she remained still for another heartbeat, feeling his chest rise beneath her hands and the restrained tension running through his thighs.

Then Nia lifted herself and came down again.

Shen's eyes opened. She kissed him before repeating the movement, and his hands shifted naturally with her posture. When Nia sat straighter, his palms returned to her hips. When she leaned into him, one arm crossed her back and took more of her weight.

His hair slipped across one eye. Nia pushed it away, kissed the exposed corner of his mouth, and continued moving over him. Each downward motion brought a little more pressure, and she gradually deepened the rhythm until Shen's fingers tightened whenever she settled hard against his lap.

His mouth moved beneath her jaw.

The kiss there made her hips hesitate. Nia caught his nape again, and the muscles beneath her fingers tightened just before Shen moved upward to meet her.

The deeper pressure pulled a sound from her.

Shen immediately held still.

Nia looked at him, felt where the change had reached inside her, and deliberately repeated the same motion herself. The next time she lowered herself, Shen met her with the same measured lift.

Nia tipped her head back while his mouth moved along the exposed line of her throat. She continued to set the rise and fall, while Shen matched the last part of each downward motion and gave her the deeper pressure she had asked for.

Outside the room, water continued through the drainage channel. A carrying frame scraped somewhere in the upper passage, followed by a complaint about wet cord and an answer too distant for Nia to understand. The voices receded while she kept moving.

Her thighs began to ache, but the sensation building low in her body made her unwilling to stop yet. Shen steadied her hips whenever her balance shifted. His mouth traveled from her throat toward her chest, and his hair brushed across her skin until Nia caught a pale handful and held it away from them.

She increased her pace. Shen's breathing changed with hers, losing some of its measured depth as he watched her face. One of his hands left her hip and slipped between their bodies.

His fingers touched her exactly where she needed them.

Nia's next downward movement shortened sharply.

A faint curve appeared at the corner of Shen's mouth.

She caught his chin and turned his face toward hers. “You look far too pleased with yourself.”

The curve remained, so Nia kissed him until she could no longer see it.

Shen kept his hand between them. His fingers moved with small, precise adjustments while Nia continued riding him, and the combination made it difficult to maintain the longer rise of her earlier rhythm. As her legs tired, she stayed closer to his lap and used shorter movements, taking him deep each time while Shen's arm held securely around her back.

Nia's fingers tightened in his hair. Her breathing became uneven against his mouth, and Shen followed the change through her body, altering the pressure of his fingers whenever her hips shifted.

Pleasure gathered tighter with each movement. Nia pressed her face against his neck and closed her legs more firmly around him, using his shoulders to steady herself while her pace became rougher and less even.

“Nia.”

His voice came low beside her ear.

She answered by moving against him again.

The next downward stroke brought his body deep against hers at the same moment his fingers found the pressure that had been building beneath every movement. Nia's body tightened abruptly around him.

Her breath broke against his neck.

She clung to Shen as the pleasure moved through her in hard pulses, leaving her thighs trembling around his hips. He held her securely at the waist and kept still enough for her to ride out the contractions without fighting his movement.

Nia remained folded over him until her breathing began to settle. Shen kissed her temple and then her cheek, his mouth slow now, though the tension still held through his body beneath her.

When she finally lifted her head, she could feel how much restraint remained in the set of his abdomen and the uneven breath he tried to quiet whenever she shifted.

Nia kissed him and began moving again.

Shen's silver eyes narrowed slightly.

She smiled against his mouth and slowed the rhythm, taking more time with each rise and return. Her thighs were tired now, and Shen's hands supported more of her weight at her hips. Nia used the strength of his shoulders and the steadiness of his grip to continue.

Her fingers returned to the back of his neck.

Shen shuddered beneath her.

Nia stroked the same place again, slower this time, and felt the reaction travel through his body where they were joined. His head tipped back, exposing his throat, and she kissed the newly bared skin before returning to his mouth when he raised his face again.

His breathing roughened over the next several movements. Nia kept the pace slow, watching his jaw tighten whenever she lowered herself fully and then easing back just enough to make him wait for the next one.

Shen's hands closed more firmly around her hips.

Nia kissed the side of his mouth and moved once more.

His body tightened beneath her. His arms came around her as the tension broke through him, holding her close while his face pressed into the curve of her neck.

Nia wrapped both arms around his shoulders and stayed there, feeling the shudder pass through his chest and abdomen before his hold gradually loosened.

Shen's tail curled around her ankle again. Nia rested against his chest, listening to his breathing settle beneath her ear while her fingers wandered through the loose hair at his shoulder. One section had become trapped beneath her forearm, and she freed it carefully before smoothing it back into the rest.

“You're going to have to redo this.”

Shen looked at the hair in her hand. “You removed the tie.”

“You let me.”

“Yes.”

Nia smiled and kissed his cheek.

They separated slowly and shifted farther onto the bed. Nia lay against Shen with one leg across his while he pulled part of the lighter fur over her hip. His fingers brushed a loose curl away from her temple, and neither of them spoke for a while.

Outside, someone called for a carrying hook. Another person answered that Selvan had taken the long one below. Footsteps crossed the upper passage, slowed near the turn, and continued.

The smell from the main room eventually reached Nia.

She lifted her head. “The broth.”

Shen turned toward the doorway. “It is on the cooler stone.”

“So it isn't ruined?”

“No.”

“Good.” Nia pushed herself upright. “I'm hungry.”

They dressed without hurrying. Shen found Nia's sleeve where it had folded beneath the edge of the fur and handed it to her before pulling on his own tunic. His pale hair remained loose down his back.

When they returned to the main room, the passage outside had grown busier. Someone carried a bundle past the entrance while a worker farther down called that the lower walking line was fully open. Another voice reminded him that carts were still waiting until tomorrow.

Nia and Shen washed at the basin before returning to the hearth.

Shen uncovered the broth and checked it while Nia dried her hands.

“The greens first?” she asked.

“Yes. The softer ones from yesterday.”

Nia brought them from the cool storage side while Shen cut a small portion of root. She passed him the greens, then sat near the hearth as he added both to the broth.

His loose hair slid over one shoulder when he bent to stir. Shen pushed it back with the outside of his wrist and continued working.

Nia watched him for a moment before looking toward the bedroom.

His hair tie remained on the low shelf beside the bed.

She decided he could find it later.
