Chapter 377: No Idea What He’s Guilty About

Sharon Sutton was a little surprised to see Anne Sutton. "Sis, what are you doing here?"

"Can’t I come see you?" Anne Sutton looked at her and asked, "Are you here alone?"

"Just me and the housekeeper." Sharon Sutton glanced at Nathan Fawcett, feeling a little uneasy. After all, she was still quite intimidated by him.

She asked Anne Sutton, "Mom didn’t come back with you?"

"No, something came up last minute. I have to head back soon."

"In such a hurry?" Sharon Sutton said. "I thought you just got back."

"I got back yesterday," Anne Sutton said. "I’ve finished my business, so I’m leaving today. Ian is over there, and I’m a bit worried."

Anne Sutton also felt rushed. This running back and forth was more exhausting than a full day of work, but there was nothing she could do about it.

She looked at Sharon Sutton and said, "Let’s go out for a meal. Call David Hayes and have him join us."

Sharon Sutton said, "He’s really busy with work. He probably doesn’t have time."

"How could he not have time?" Anne Sutton checked her watch. "Isn’t it almost the end of the workday? Call him now! What, am I not important enough to have a meal with him?"

No matter how busy he was, he couldn’t possibly not have time for a single meal.

Sharon Sutton thought of how David Hayes had been making himself scarce lately and said, "I’ll give him a call."

She picked up her phone and made the call.

Soon, David Hayes answered the phone. "Hello."

Sharon Sutton said, "Honey, let’s have dinner together tonight..."

Before she could add that her sister was visiting, David Hayes said, "When do I have time for that? Eat by yourself! Isn’t the housekeeper there? Have her keep you company."

With that, David Hayes hung up, acting incredibly cold and aloof.

Anne Sutton sat to the side, watching Sharon. Sharon hadn’t expected him to hang up so quickly. She turned to Anne, embarrassed, and said, "He’s probably busy right now. Let’s just go eat by ourselves. What would you like to eat, Sis? My treat. I still haven’t properly thanked you for what you did before!"

Although Sharon Sutton appeared calm, Anne Sutton could tell something wasn’t quite right.

She glanced at Nathan Fawcett and asked, "Has the company been this busy lately?"

"Not really," Nathan Fawcett said. "The company rarely has employees work overtime."

"..." Anne Sutton said, "Well, it seems my brother-in-law is just so dedicated, isn’t he."

He couldn’t even be bothered to show up for a meal and didn’t even have the time to let Sharon finish her sentence.

’Seriously...’

’Just great!’

Anne Sutton said to Sharon, "Alright, let’s go. We’ll eat by ourselves and not wait for him."

Sharon Sutton nodded. "Okay."

After leaving Sharon’s place, they found a restaurant nearby.

Sharon Sutton asked a few things about Mrs. Sutton.

Anne Sutton sat beside her, watching her. "Mom’s doing fine. What’s most important right now is you."

Although Sharon Sutton didn’t say it outright, one look at her was enough for Anne Sutton to know that she probably wasn’t very happy.

Sharon Sutton said, "I’m doing fine."

"Mom opened a shop."

"Really?" Sharon Sutton said. "That’s great! If she has something of her own to do, she won’t be sad anymore."

"Do you want to come with me to Veridia for a few days? You can visit Mom while you’re there."

Hearing Anne’s words, Sharon said, "I should probably discuss it with David Hayes!"

Anne Sutton said, "You have to discuss it with him just to leave town?"

Sharon Sutton said, "I at least have to let him know."

She had wanted to go before, but David Hayes wouldn’t let her.

Sharon Sutton picked up her phone. "I’ll ask him."

With that, she sent a message to David Hayes: "My sister’s here. She wants me to go with her for a few days."

David Hayes was at Lucy Todd’s place at that moment. Lucy was cooking. When he saw Sharon’s message, he was stunned for a moment and typed back, "When did your sister get here? How come I didn’t know?"

Sharon Sutton replied, "I called you, didn’t I? You said you were busy. We’re eating out right now."

"Where are you? I’m on my way."

"You’re done with work?" Sharon Sutton was a bit surprised, thinking he was still busy.

David Hayes replied, "Yeah."

Anne Sutton and Sharon Sutton hadn’t been sitting long before David Hayes arrived.

He arrived in a hurry. Seeing Anne Sutton and Nathan Fawcett were both there, he said, "Sis, when did you get here? You didn’t even give me a heads-up."

Anne Sutton said, "Weren’t you busy? I didn’t want to disturb you. What, are you done now?"

David Hayes said, "Yes, I just finished. I came right over when Sharon told me you were here."

After speaking, he sat down next to Sharon Sutton.

Anne Sutton looked at the man, feeling that something was off about him. He seemed incredibly fake.

She didn’t call David Hayes out on it, simply saying, "You’re so busy, you didn’t need to make a special trip. I just wanted to take Sharon to Veridia for a couple of days."

David Hayes glanced at Sharon Sutton, then said to Anne, "Let’s forget about Veridia, it’s too far. I don’t feel comfortable with her traveling."

"What’s there to not feel comfortable about?" Anne Sutton looked at David Hayes. "You don’t trust me to look after her?"

"Wouldn’t she just be a bother to you, Sis? You’re so busy, don’t you have your own things to take care of?"

’He was afraid that if Sharon went, she would tell Anne all sorts of things that might jeopardize his position.’

’He had worked so hard to get where he was today. He couldn’t let Sharon say the wrong thing!’

Anne Sutton said, "She’s my sister. I don’t find it troublesome at all. She’ll be safe with me, you can rest assured of that. It’s just a two-day trip, why are you so nervous? What’s the matter, now that she’s married to you, she can’t even leave the house?"

David Hayes forced a smile. "I know you care about Sharon, Sis. Once I’m done with the work I have on hand, I’ll go with her to Veridia to see Mom. We have a great marriage, so please don’t make things difficult for me! I can’t sleep well when she’s not by my side."

Anne Sutton looked at the man. Seeing that he wouldn’t let Sharon go, she had no choice but to turn to her sister. "Sharon, what do you say?"

Seeing that David Hayes didn’t agree, Sharon said to Anne, "Then I won’t go and bother you, Sis! Maybe next time! In a couple of days, when he’s done with his work, I’ll have him take me."

"..." Seeing that Sharon listened to whatever David Hayes said, Anne Sutton sighed. "Alright! In that case, I won’t insist. Sharon, you had a prenatal checkup recently, right? Was everything okay?"

"No problems," Sharon Sutton said. "The doctor you recommended is very responsible."

Sharon’s obstetrician had been recommended by Anne; she was a colleague of Anne’s and they were on good terms.

Anne Sutton said, "Okay, then! Just let me know whenever you want to come visit."

Sharon Sutton nodded. "Okay."

Meanwhile, Anna Linden was having dinner at the Shields family’s home.

It was Mrs. Shields’ first time meeting her, and she had prepared a huge spread of dishes to welcome Anna Linden.

Stella Shields sat next to Anna Linden and said, "Please, help yourself. Have some more."

Anna Linden said, "Thank you."

Mrs. Shields looked at Anna Linden and said warmly, "Dr. Linden, it’s truly an honor for our family to have you over for dinner today."
