Married To My One Night Mistake
Chapter 133: Being family for a day
The morning of the triplets’ eighth birthday had arrived. JK had flown in from Spain first thing in the morning, arriving just as the final setup was being completed in the back garden.
When Selen saw him walking across the lawn, a genuine wave of relief cut through her exhaustion. He was the one person from her past who had always offered unconditional support, long before anything.
As the caterers and entertainment vendors arrived, the physical tension between Selen and Clancy remained heavy and completely undeniable. They crossed paths near the terrace while coordinating the outdoor seating arrangements, their eyes locking for a brief, freezing second.
Clancy’s gaze was still entirely empty of hope, his posture rigid and detached as he handled his tasks with icy efficiency. He did not look at her with the raw vulnerability he had displayed in the foyer that day, and the profound feeling she still carried for him remained trapped behind a wall of absolute awkwardness.
During a quiet moment before the guests arrived, Selen sat with JK on the side veranda, away from the bustling activity.
She walked him through everything that had transpired over the past week, from the intense argument with Newton, Clancy walking in on them, her own paralyzing speechlessness in the foyer, and the sudden corporate collapse of her Spanish ministry that forced her to sign with the Vanguard International Art Group.
JK listened with absolute focus, a proud, warm expression tightening his features as she finished. He leaned back, shaking his head with immense respect.
"You have managed a chaotic situation entirely on your own, Selen. Turning in your resignation to the Madrid legal advisor and securing an independent line of defense with Vance shows exactly how far you have gone. You protected your babies from a total collapse, and I could not be prouder of your strength." he said.
He paused, looking out toward the lawn where Clancy was setting up the garden games with David and Daniel. He turned his attention back to her, his tone shifting into something deeply earnest.
"But you need to be entirely honest with yourself now, Selen. If you know who you want, you should go for him. Forget about the past, forget about the old toxic constraints, and only focus on the present before it is too late. Silence and hesitation will only leave you empty-handed." he advised.
Before Selen could find her voice to respond, the arrival of the first major guests completely shifted the atmosphere of the estate. The entire Avelino family arrived together in a formal show of unity.
Rose and Jimmy walked in first, their high society arrogance entirely discarded as they greeted the triplets with quiet humility, keeping strictly to the boundaries Selen had established.
The only one missing from the group was Katherine, who had stayed behind to protect her fragile pregnancy, but her absence was understood and respected.
Julian Avelino stepped forward first. He stopped a few paces back, his posture tight with a visible, heavy anxiety. "Selen," Julian said, his voice low and completely steady as he looked her dead in the eye.
"I wanted to make my own apology today. I know that staying silent years ago made me completely complicit in the way our family cast you out. I watched you leave when you were vulnerable, and I did absolutely nothing to stop the malice.
Seeing how remarkably you have raised my niece and nephews on your own makes the cowardice of my past completely undeniable. I am deeply sorry for my part in your pain, and I want to earn my place on their family tree under your direction." he said.
The raw sincerity of his words cut through the friction of the old family grudge. Selen evaluated his face, recognizing the authentic humility that was now running through the entire Avelino line.
"Thank you, Julian," Selen replied calmly, her tone genuine as she offered a respectful nod. "I appreciate the honesty. We are taking this step by step, but I am glad you are here for the children today." she said.
With the apologies finalized, the celebration moved fully into the back garden near the massive oak tree. The triplets were entirely happy, running through the lawn with their cousins, completely insulated from the historical adult drama.
Selen stood near the edge of the terrace, watching the vibrant scene unfold under her supervision. JK’s advice was still vibrating loudly in her mind as her gaze tracked Clancy, who was lifting Diana up to help her blow out the candles on the birthday cake.
The direction of her life had changed permanently, her career was secure, her protectors were gone, and the path forward required her to finally break her own speechlessness before the empty distance in Clancy’s eyes became a permanent fixture.
The rest of the party went by smoothly, with most of the invitees in attendance, and by the end of the party, it was safe to say that the party was a success.
The last of the birthday decorations had been gathered, and the quiet stillness of the evening settled heavily over the household. JK had headed upstairs to check on the triplets, who were completely exhausted and fast asleep after their big day.
The Avelino family had left hours ago, leaving the back terrace entirely silent.
Clancy stood near the edge of the veranda, his coat slung over his arm as he prepared to walk to his vehicle.
His posture remained rigid, his expressions cool and entirely guarded. He had spent the afternoon being a devoted father to David, Daniel, and Diana, but the cold distance in his eyes whenever he glanced at Selen had not shifted a single fraction.
Selen walked out onto the terrace, her footsteps soft against the stone floor. The advice JK had given her earlier that afternoon was still vibrating loudly in her mind.
She knew she could no longer afford to let her speechlessness dictate their future. She stepped directly into his path, her breathing shallow as she forced herself to break the awkwardness between them.
