Chapter 366 -197: He’s Here, Who Can Stop Him?

Police Headquarters.

Night had fallen, cloaking the entire gray building in darkness.

The building’s exterior walls had become a blurry black shadow, but the light spilling from the windows still managed to trace its silhouette. From a distance, it looked like a great ship sailing through the night, each lit window a porthole on its side.

The sentries at the main gate had just changed shifts. The new guard on duty shifted his rifle from his right shoulder to his left, stomped his numb feet, and scanned the area in front of the entrance with a vigilant gaze.

At that moment, the lights in Zhai Jia’s office were still on, their white glare a bit harsh. He was busy arranging grilled skewers.

The skewers were wrapped in wax paper, which was already soaked through with grease.

Zhai Jia unwrapped one of the packages and began laying out the skewers one by one on a stainless steel platter on his desk. They were still steaming, and the aroma of cumin and chili powder instantly filled the office.

Zhai Jia took a sniff. “Damn, that smells amazing!”

Just as he said that, the office door was pushed open from the outside.

Zhai Yu walked in, looking travel-worn.

He wore a dark jacket, zipped only halfway up, revealing a black crewneck shirt underneath. The collar was slightly crooked, as if he had gotten out of a car and rushed over without having time to tidy himself up. There were also some grayish-white dust stains on his pant legs and shoes.

It was rare to see Zhai Yu look so exhausted.

He had just returned from out of town. His car had driven straight to the headquarters building, and he had come upstairs without even stopping for a sip of water.

Zhai Jia was bent over, arranging the skewers. He looked up at the sound of the door and smiled. “Perfect timing. You got here just in time. Sit down and have some.”

As he spoke, Zhai Jia placed the last skewer of grilled chives, straightened up, wiped the grease from his fingers with the wax paper, and gestured with his chin toward the chair opposite him.

Zhai Yu didn’t move.

He actually had no intention of sitting down and didn’t even make a move to take off his jacket. He seemed to be in a hurry, but seeing Zhai Jia’s relaxed manner, he pulled the door shut and said quickly, “I found that processing plant Xiao Yunkai mentioned, but things aren’t quite what we thought.”

Zhai Jia froze, looking at him blankly. “What do you mean?”

Zhai Yu said in a low voice, “Both he and Zhou Hai mentioned that pharmaceutical processing plant. But Zhou Hai was holding something back from us.”

“What was he holding back?” Zhai Jia asked.

Zhai Yu looked at him and paused for a second, as if weighing his words, then slowly said, “The Divine Martial Society… I think they’re secretly selling banned drugs.”

The office fell silent for a moment.

The buzz of the incandescent lights suddenly became exceptionally clear.

Zhai Jia was stunned. His voice jumped half an octave as he said in disbelief, “Holy shit! Is the Divine Martial Society insane? They dare to sell banned drugs?”

He paused.

“Then Dragon Eagle doesn’t even need to get involved. We can just file a report and raid them! Trafficking banned drugs is a felony. That alone is enough to put them in deep trouble. Who cares if they’re the Divine Martial Society or what. We submit the report, get the word from on high, and we can take down their whole operation overnight.”

As he spoke, his hand was already reaching for the communicator on the desk.

But Zhai Yu shook his head. “I already thought of that, but unfortunately, there’s no direct evidence proving the Divine Martial Society’s involvement. The processing plant’s legal representative is someone completely unrelated to them. The factory building is rented, the equipment was purchased, and the workers are temporary hires. The Divine Martial Society has no assets, no official connection, and no written documents that can link them to the banned drugs…”

“Besides, if we really do that, they’ll just sacrifice a few pawns to get themselves off the hook. All you’ll end up catching are a few small-time thugs, while the real masterminds will have already washed their hands of it completely. You file the report, it gets approved, and you raid the plant. Then what? The next day, the Divine Martial Society issues a statement saying it was the illegal act of a few individual members, that they had no knowledge of it, are deeply saddened, and are willing to cooperate with the investigation. What can you do to them then?”

After hearing this, Zhai Jia opened his mouth, then closed it again.

‘True…’

‘It wouldn’t be the first time they’d seen something like this.’ 𝑓𝑟ℯℴ𝓂

“So we’re stuck now? We know they’re behind it, but we can’t get any evidence, so we can’t touch them?”

Zhai Yu nodded. “We need more time.”

Then he changed the subject. “Let’s not talk about this. What about Ah Ze? Weren’t you saying he came in today? Did he say anything?”

“Ah Ze said to investigate Xiao Yunkai more thoroughly,” Zhai Jia said. “He suspects there’s something up with that guy.”

Zhai Yu hadn’t even sat down yet, but upon hearing this, he immediately straightened up.

“I’ll go interrogate him.”

He turned to walk toward the door, the hem of his jacket swinging with the movement and stirring up a faint breeze.

“Not so fast, not so fast.” Zhai Jia chuckled, reaching out and grabbing Zhai Yu’s arm.

Zhai Yu stopped and looked at Zhai Jia, waiting for a decent explanation.

“Eat first.” Zhai Jia let go of his arm and said with a wry smile, “It’s dinnertime. Can’t you just relax for a minute?”

Zhai Yu didn’t sit down.

“Alright, look, I have an idea,” Zhai Jia said, pushing a beer toward Zhai Yu before opening one for himself. He grinned. “We can’t use force on a guy like Xiao Yunkai. Let’s eat first. After we’re done, we’ll go over and have a sit-down with him. Bring him a bite to eat.”

Zhai Yu looked at the beer and raised an eyebrow slightly. “Playing nice?”

Zhai Jia gave a mysterious smile, picked up a lamb skewer, and took a bite. “This kid is extremely defensive. If you go in and start interrogating him right away, he’ll be better at dodging your questions than you are at asking them. His defense mechanism is a reflex. The second you ask something, his first instinct isn’t to answer, but to figure out how to answer without losing anything. You could ask him ten questions, and he’d give you eleven different answers. Which one are you going to believe?”
