30: Coulson: S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Safe House Is Impregnable!
Because of the Chaos Insurgency’s attack, Coulson was forced to immediately evacuate the witness, Henry, along with the rest of his team.
After leaving behind enough personnel to hold the safe house, Coulson and the others hurriedly withdrew through a secondary evacuation route.
Not long afterward, Coulson, Natasha, Skye, and Agent May were already escorting the surviving witness in an armored Cadillac toward another S.H.I.E.L.D.
safe house.
Once they finally had a moment to breathe, Coulson asked, “Agent Romanoff, that call just now was from Ethan?” Coulson had certainly heard Ethan’s name before, but he had never actually met the man.
He had only seen the public information available on him.
This suspected high-ranking Foundation commander had already become one of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s priority targets for observation.
As the officer in charge of the S.H.I.E.L.D.
Anomalous Response Unit, Coulson naturally took Ethan very seriously.
He knew Natasha and Skye had personally encountered Ethan during the previous containment incident, so the fact that Ethan had called Natasha directly was something he couldn’t ignore.
Natasha looked thoughtful.
When she heard Coulson’s question, she raised her head.
“He warned us that our agents near Las Vegas need to evacuate immediately.” “But the defensive forces we’ve deployed there are substantial.” Coulson couldn’t help smiling.
“Isn’t Mr.
Ethan being a little overly dramatic?” “The witness near Las Vegas is being protected inside one of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s small classified installations.” “Even a heavily armed mechanized infantry regiment wouldn’t be able to simply storm that place.” He shook his head.
“Maybe he doesn’t understand S.H.I.E.L.D.’s capabilities well enough.” “As far as the anomaly we encountered last time is concerned—SCP-939, ‘With Many Voices’—even creatures like those would be wiped out if they tried to attack that facility head-on.” Sitting nearby, Grant Ward, secretly a HYDRA operative embedded within the team, gave a faint, mocking smile.
“The Foundation has been quiet for quite a while.” “Maybe that SCP-939 incident hurt them more badly than we thought.” He folded his arms.
“In the end, we’ll still have to rely on S.H.I.E.L.D.” “The Strategic Security Administration is just a declining intelligence agency.” “And Ethan probably only has access to some outdated classified information.” Ward looked toward Natasha and Skye.
“Agents Romanoff, Skye…” “I think the two of you may have exaggerated the Foundation’s strength.” “Isn’t it possible that they’re simply not as powerful as we imagined?” Skye immediately snorted.
“The Foundation contains anomalies with ordinary human lives.” “Even if you call them a declining organization, those people willingly sacrifice themselves for humanity.” “What gives you the right to insult their honor?” Ward shrugged.
“History belongs to the victors.” “If they’re declining, that simply means they no longer have the qualifications or the ability.” “In the future, aren’t anomalies going to be our responsibility anyway?” Skye glared at him.
Natasha’s expression also turned noticeably colder.
The atmosphere inside the vehicle instantly became tense.
Seeing his subordinates beginning to argue, Coulson quickly intervened.
“All right, that’s enough.” “There’s no reason to start fighting over this.” Then Coulson gave his own conclusion, putting an end to the argument.
“We’ll warn the Las Vegas team to increase their alert level.” “But I still believe the Chaos Insurgency is the greater threat here, not the anomaly itself.” “We’ve already seen what anomalies can do.” “Even SCP-939 could be killed with sufficiently powerful large-caliber weapons.” He smiled confidently.
“Our defenses in Las Vegas are practically impregnable.” “Even if this anomaly turns out to be some giant lizard straight out of a movie, we’ve got enough firepower there to blow it to pieces.” “So there’s no need to worry too much.” He then looked toward Ward.
“That said, the Foundation warned us out of goodwill.” “Grant, you shouldn’t maliciously insult the leadership of a friendly agency.” With Coulson mediating, Skye and Ward finally stopped arguing.
Skye gave Ward one last irritated snort before turning toward the window and ignoring him.
Coulson had no idea that almost immediately after he finished speaking…
The classified S.H.I.E.L.D.
installation near Las Vegas received an unexpected visitor.
Late at night.
At a remote farm outside Las Vegas, several heavily armed S.H.I.E.L.D.
security personnel were patrolling the perimeter.
This ordinary-looking property was actually one of the agency’s secret facilities.
A witness had been transferred there earlier that day for protection.
As a result, security had been raised significantly.
One of the guards suddenly stopped walking.
He stared toward the base of the perimeter wall.
Something was approaching.
Something that looked vaguely humanoid.
“Hey.” The guard frowned.
“There’s something down there.” Another guard stopped beside him.
Together, the two men carefully watched the shadow approaching the wall.
It looked like a human figure standing nearly 2.4 meters tall.
But its arms and torso were grotesquely disproportionate.
It looked almost like a person suffering from extreme malnutrition.
As the figure came closer and the guard finally saw it clearly, he muttered, “What the fuck…?” “What is that thing?” Its skin was unnaturally pale.
There was no visible pigmentation whatsoever.
Its body was so thin that it looked almost skeletal.
Its arms were abnormally long, ending in long, sharp fingernails.
Its narrow head and grotesquely elongated jaw were completely disproportionate compared with an ordinary human being.
Whatever this thing was— It wasn’t human.
Then the creature seemed to realize that the two guards had clearly seen its face.
It abruptly stopped.
For a moment, it appeared overcome with overwhelming grief.
Then it raised both hands and covered its face.
It began screaming.
Crying.
Producing a distorted, incomprehensible sound somewhere between sobbing and wailing.
Both S.H.I.E.L.D.
guards instantly felt their skin crawl.
Every instinct in their bodies screamed danger.
“Shit…” One of them stared in horror.
“Is it…” “Is it running at us?!” The next second— SCP-096, “The Shy Guy,” vanished from where it had been standing.
Then it appeared directly in front of the two armed guards at terrifying speed.
Horrific screams echoed across the compound.
And throughout S.H.I.E.L.D.’s classified Las Vegas facility— ALARMS BEGAN BLARING.
