Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 150 Zilch Speaks

  • Next Chapter

The rehearsal vault on floor three was a room lined with tiers of empty seats, built for demonstrations nobody attended. Ganzo booked it for the afternoon under the name Hammer Appreciation Society, fooling absolutely nobody at the Bureau front desk.

"Floor three is ours until six, kids, Thursday’s hearing needs us sharp, so let the diva sing," he rumbled from the top tier.

Kevin Two followed them down the corridor on a squeaky cart, printing the Council schedule in a tiny font. Gerald the fish rode on top in a mop bucket, wearing an expression of profound legal skepticism, as always.

Zinnia unfolded a schedule across her knee, "The Council meets Thursday at noon, my father’s return dinner is pending, he has not forgotten, he never forgets."

"I intend to practice standing and glaring, I am told it is half of any hearing," Bruno said, flexing his fingers.

"Chat, the Council is a courtroom of angry uncles, everyone please wear clean socks," Pipa murmured.

Nilo stood alone on the empty stage with the opera mask raised, the squad scattered across the tiers. Cadenza demanded this moment daily for three weeks, her patience finally running thinner than her very highest notes.

"Darling, an audience at last, seventeen tiers of potential applause, I could weep," she sighed from the rack.

Gold-trimmed feathers erupted across his coat as the mask settled, long crimson waves tumbling down his back. A tuning fork spear dropped into his gloved hand, humming a perfect note that rattled the rafters.

"A spear in my hand, a cape on my back, I rhyme every word like a song on a track."

Clangor huffed from the rack, "Young man, I shall not rhyme for any cause, I would sooner be melted into a doorstop."

Jingles squeaked, "I could rhyme, it is easy, breezy, cheesy... oh no, I have started, somebody stop me."

"Chat, he is rhyming on purpose, it is the funniest curse in the entire Bureau," she whispered, hugging her knees.

Bruno stepped onto the stage and tapped his chest plate twice, daring the diva to do her worst. Toro’s horns flared along his brow, glinting in the vault lights as his feet dug into the boards.

"Strike me with your finest note, Madame, a Steelhorn stands unmoved by mere sound."

"A boast so bold deserves reply, so brace yourself, here comes the sky," he sang, grinning.

The first note struck Bruno like a falling door, hurling the Brass Bull backward into the third row. Seats exploded in a spray of splinters while Pipa’s drone fled to the rafters, shrieking in furious static.

"Madame, I protest this treatment of a Steelhorn, I shall not be thrown into the—"

A second note flattened the rest of the row, ending the sentence in a squeak.

Bruno dragged himself out of the splintered third row, brushing sawdust from his shoulders with great wounded dignity. Four rows of ruined chairs lay behind him, each one glared at as though it started the fight.

"Ow," he said, rubbing his forehead, "I was unmoved for nearly a second."

Cadenza’s voice slipped out of the mask quietly, nothing like the grand diva the whole squad knew. She asked for one thing only, an audience that would stay seated until the very last note.

"My last aria, darling, I never finished it... will you sit and hear it all?"

Nilo answered softly, "I’ll sing it through from start to end, for you, my friend, my stage, my friend."

Her voice poured through the vault, trembling at first, then steadying into a note that made the lamps flicker. The squad stopped breathing in their seats, even Ganzo, who never once stopped talking in a theater before tonight.

A hush fell over the vault, the whole building seeming to lean in and listen.

Behind his eyes he saw her theater, a thousand empty seats, one lamp burning above the stage. She sang to the empty chairs anyway, the Wearers coming, the last note never reaching its end.

’She sang to an empty hall because somebody had to. That is the bravest thing I ever heard.’

He carried the final phrase home himself, his voice cracking on the high note, the spear shining in the dark.

Zinnia rose first, followed by Pipa, Bruno with a groan, until the whole squad stood on its feet. Their applause echoed through the empty tiers like a thousand ghosts finally given somewhere warm to sit down.

[Skill: Standing Ovation]

The vault lights flickered, the whole building seeming to join the audience.

Stage lights ignited overhead, pouring gold across the vault, as sound wings unfolded from his shoulders in layered sheets. Floating speakers rose around him in towering stacks, humming a chord that made every plank of the stage tremble.

"Captain, I seek a target, strong and steady, are you ready?" he sang, spinning the spear.

Ganzo roared, vaulting down the tiers, "Kid, I have waited my whole career for someone to ask."

Nilo kicked off the stage and flew, sound wings snapping open, the speakers circling him like loyal planets. Every note he sang left a visible ripple in the air, a shockwave painted in rippling gold light.

"Louder, bolder, shake the wall, until the whole vault hears my call!" he shouted.

Nilo sang as he dove, "Your wish is my command, so cover your ears and take your stand."

"Aria Break!" he shouted, spinning the spear overhead.

A wave of gold light cracked the stage floor into a perfect spiral of splintered boards.

Ganzo met each ripple with his hammer, feet skidding, fire flaring, laughing like a man at a festival. Cracks raced up the vault walls with every impact, the ceiling dropping fine gray dust across the tiers.

"More, kid, I felt that one in my fillings!" he bellowed, feet sliding.

The last chord reached the Captain’s chest plate, stopping against the hammer in a single shuddering wall. He slid three feet backward, grinning wildly, the floor smoking in two long scars behind his feet.

"That is a diva worth the rent," he laughed, shaking out his wrist, "and I held back at least a third."

Nilo peeled the mask free with a shaky hand, "I’m winded, I’m sore, I can’t take more... wait, why am I still rhyming?"

[ LEDGER ]

[Madame Cadenza: price in force for one hour]

[Speech: rhyme until the next bell]

"Darling, the encore lingers for an hour, it is a courtesy," Cadenza purred.

Pipa choked on her pastry, "Chat, he is still doing it, I am recording this for the funeral."

Clangor sniffed from the rack, "Young man, I do not wish to be dramatic, but a knight’s shield is quite incapable of that sort of applause."

Jingles whimpered, "I vote that nobody tells the vault what happened to its ceiling."

"He fights like himself again, only louder and with better lighting," Zinnia murmured to Pipa, smiling despite herself.

Afterward the vault felt strangely small, the broken seats smoldering, the squad catching their breath among the splinters. Nilo slumped onto the stage edge, the opera mask cooling in his hand, rhymes still tugging his tongue.

Zilch’s voice rose inside his head, slow, level and wide awake. "The Collector keeps no mask for himself, he carries each one he cuts to the Court beyond the Rift."

Nilo froze, the hair on his neck lifting, "Zilch, that was a sentence, with a verb and everything."

"The Court pays him in borrowed faces... the very faces Visages wear until their owners come to collect."

Jingles shrieked inside the rack, "He spoke a paragraph, somebody call a museum, somebody call a priest!"

"Darling, he has been saving his words for three hundred years, let him spend them," Cadenza said, sniffing.

For weeks Zilch answered everything in three words, Nilo learning to treasure the careful economy of those words. Hearing him speak fluently felt like watching a locked door open from the inside, slowly, without a sound.

’Hollis Fenn’s face on a Visage in a Ring plaza. Somebody sold it. Somebody paid.’

"Say it again, slower, I want the squad to hear every word," Nilo murmured.

Nilo repeated every word aloud to the squad, watching their faces dim one by one like windows at night. Nobody spoke for a long while afterward, since nobody could think of any joke big enough to answer it.

"Eight Hunters robbed so a Visage can borrow a smile, I have heard of worse trades, but not many," Ganzo said quietly.

"A trade," Zinnia murmured, "masks for faces, faces for Visages... the Collector is only the middle of the chain."

"Then we find the buyer, the middle of a chain is never where it ends."

"Chains have ends," Zilch said.

Nilo’s voice dropped until it was level and low, the grin gone entirely, "Nobody repeats a word of this outside the vault until we know the buyer’s name."

"That includes the Director?" Zinnia asked.

"She keeps a drawer of names, I would rather ours stayed off the pile."

"Understood, kid, my beard is a vault, nothing gets in or out," Ganzo rumbled.

Hobb appeared at the vault doors holding a silver-edged envelope at arm’s length, as if it might bite him. The seal bore a golden fox, caught mid-leap, its tail curling into the initials of the Gilded Foxes’ Master.

"Special delivery for Squad Nine, hand carried, I promise nobody sent it through the tubes."

"The Master’s footman waits downstairs for an answer, he refuses to leave without one," Hobb added, mopping his sweating forehead.

Zinnia broke the seal, her face draining by degrees, "My father invites the squad to dine at the Foxes’ Hall on Wednesday evening, with the thief in the weeping mask as guest of honor."

"My father has never once asked for a guest of honor, he asks for witnesses."

"The Masters of the Foxes do not host guests, Nilo, they host inventories," she added, folding the letter.

"Then I will wear my cleanest scarf and my most boring face, which is any face," Nilo said. "So I am either dessert or evidence."

"Chat, place your bets, dessert, evidence, or both with sprinkles," Pipa whispered.

Bruno crossed his arms, "A Steelhorn will sit beside him in either case, Quartermaster, provided dumplings are involved."

"I shall attend as the dessert’s supervisor, a duty I have trained for my entire life," Ganzo said, patting his stomach.

"Darling, I do hope the Foxes own a stage, I have a new gown in mind," Cadenza whispered from the rack.

’A second dinner at the Foxes’ Hall. Seven courses and one sharp knife.’

"Chat, no stream near any Master, I will bring a notebook and a small pen."

"Young man, I insist upon accompanying you as a decorative gentleman, a plume looks well at any banquet," Clangor said stiffly.

"Then we dine, we smile, we listen to everything the Master does not say."
