Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 37 Someone Else Said Yes

The preservation order held for three hours before unit fourteen moved an applicant into the sealed room anyway.

Paloma learned about the breach at eleven that night, when the magistrate refused entry without a casualty or licensed inspector attached.

'The law needs blood on paper... Veil Court has a chair ready to provide it,' Ossian stood beside the depot van, 'go before the form catches up.'

Bastien had recorded the second applicant at ten that morning, a young man carrying an advertisement folded into four equal squares.

Doran, twenty-two, Signalling Class, awakened last spring into a profile employers treated as a message service with medical premiums.

He watched the fragment refuse Tallis, which made Veil Court's product look selective rather than unstable.

"Rejection sells the next binding," Paloma came through the van speaker, "A product that says no appears safer than one accepting everybody."

'They turned Tallis surviving into the sales pitch... damn it, that is cleaner than any lie Ruan tells,' Ossian checked Dreadweight, 'rear stair.'

The chalk mark remained beneath the hinge at half past eleven, though the sealed-room door stood open plus the tray sat empty.

A sound came from inside that had once been somebody trying to say stop.

Doran lay strapped across the clinic chair with one restraint torn loose, while three workers stayed beyond reach of their own equipment.

Two counterfeit pieces had entered his arm, one near the wrist plus another under the shoulder, each pulling toward a different shape.

At the wrist, the lower fragment wanted his palm against the floor, growing extra joints downward through the forearm.

Near his shoulder, the upper piece pulled toward the ceiling until skin opened along the old human seam.

'His arm is the rope between two animals... about one minute before they divide him,' Ossian opened both hands, 'left catches low, right opens high.'

Ironback Left went beneath the wrist with an open palm, catching the downward pull before it reached the chair frame.

Jackal Right found the damaged shoulder seam, dragging Ossian's fist upward without asking whether the bone could follow.

[Two starving faces have been fed one living limb]

[Neither counterfeit understands sharing, retreat, or the death of its stabiliser]

'The system almost sounds angry... save that thought for anywhere else,' Ossian held both directions, 'Maelle needs the upper seam.'

Maelle entered behind him with the hammer already warm, having ignored every instruction that placed engineers outside a binding room.

"Do not pull the shoulder piece," she set the bronze edge against black material, "His body learned its wrong shape around that thread."

She heated the counterfeit rather than Doran, working below the point where living tissue burned plus above the temperature its plating tolerated.

Eleven seconds of heat made the upper fragment release its grip, though a surgical filament remained buried from shoulder to elbow.

'Hard piece comes off, thread stays inside... that is how it returns later,' Ossian saw the black line settle, 'record the residue now.'

Paloma's remote camera held the whole arm in frame, including the filament Maelle could not remove without taking the nerves beside it.

The lower fragment came away into Ironback's palm once Ossian stopped resisting its direction, becoming weight instead of hunger.

He spent that stored pull into the softened upper shell, collapsing the extra joints without driving force through Doran's bones.

Separation lasted nineteen seconds, while bleeding control needed another four minutes from the clinic that had caused it.

Doran began breathing in a human rhythm, one arm restored except for the black filament visible beneath his skin.

Calista cut the remaining restraint rather than the clinic worker's throat, though the Mantis showed her both efficient lines at once.

She checked Doran's fingers from little finger inward, making him name each touch without watching the hand.

All five answered, while the black filament pulled toward her voice whenever she said his name.

'The thread hears people... no, it reacts to identity, that is worse,' Ossian watched the line shift, 'keep every voice sample away from him.'

Maelle marked both ends with medical ink, measured three millimetres of movement, plus ordered silence around the injured arm.

The consent form remained on the floor beside the chair, carrying Doran's signature above an empty section for product identity.

"He consented to a service without a named mask," Paloma spoke through the remote camera, "The blank is not an omission, it is their business model."

'They sold him whatever shape survived the blood test... and called the missing name flexibility,' Ossian photographed the form, 'take the paper too.'

One clinic worker claimed the product name arrived after stabilisation, though no successful file in the cabinet carried such an addition.

Bastien opened three folders while lifting Doran, finding each product field blank beside service terms filled to the final credit.

[The applicant has been unmade without being discarded]

[Your court preserved material another court had already entered as loss]

[Identity Fracture, thirty-seven percent]

'Thirty-five to thirty-seven for nineteen seconds... hell, the system charged the method without caring who survived it,' Ossian read the figure, 'get Doran upstairs.'

Bastien put Doran's good arm across his shoulders, lifted with the old porter brace, then counted every stair aloud.

The clinic workers objected only when Maelle bagged the lower fragment, caring more about inventory than the blood across their chair.

"Evidence remains under preservation," one worker reached toward the sealed bag, "Removal violates the order your lawyer requested."

"Your order preserved six cases," Maelle kept the bag against her chest, "This was inside a person when you broke it."

'They want the fragment back before the patient reaches daylight... useful priority, put that on camera,' Ossian blocked the worker, 'no fists.'

Ruan sat in the corridor behind a rented lens, his paid-observer docket displayed on the chair beside him.

His recording light had started when Ossian touched Doran, leaving out the tray, straps, clinic workers, plus every minute before intervention.

"You entered an unregistered medical room armed," Ruan kept the lens level, "You placed monster equipment into a civilian's shoulder."

'He bought the last nine minutes and discarded the first fifty... same man, better camera,' Ossian looked directly into it, 'give him no anger.'

"Keep recording," Ossian moved aside so Doran passed between them, "The arm works, and your client left the thread inside it."

Ruan followed the black line with his lens for one second before moving the frame back onto Dreadweight.

That choice entered Paloma's wider recording, along with the empty tray plus Veil Court's preservation breach.

Investigator Ione arrived at four in the morning with two officers, a seizure order, plus authority nobody had possessed before blood appeared.

She wore a Directorate coat with a high collar, carried a clipboard where most hunters kept a visible weapon, and looked at Doran first.

"Who removed the fragments?" Ione inspected the chair without touching its restraints, "Who authorised contact with the patient?"

"I removed them, nobody authorised it," Ossian kept both answers together, "Your casualty rule opened this room four hours late."

'She heard the accusation without changing her face... not Ruan stillness, something trained into place,' Ossian watched her pen, 'tell only what happened.'

Maelle surrendered the bag after Ione signed across its seal, recorded the retained filament, plus named the heat used during removal.

Ione took Paloma's full fifty-one-minute file beside Ruan's nine, checking both timestamps before asking either person what they meant.

"Nobody releases footage until evidence review," she put that instruction on record, "Any edited publication becomes interference with an active seizure."

Ruan closed his lens, removed its storage card, then placed a backup into the observer docket before an officer reached him.

'He prepared the copy before I touched the boy... shit, the story was the service he paid for,' Ossian followed him toward the stair, 'too late.'

At seven, four district feeds carried Ruan's nine minutes under a caption naming The Unmasked as a private binding syndicate.

The clip opened on Ossian's hands around Doran's arm, showed Maelle heating the shoulder, then ended before the boy walked upstairs.

Nothing in those nine minutes showed Veil Court, the fighting fragments, or the surgical filament left behind.

Guild number 4417 sat beneath Ossian's face in every version, printed clearly enough for a cancellation notice to find the depot.

The first client called before anyone had finished cleaning Doran's blood from the clinic chair.
