Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 52 The Woman Who Spent Her Voice

  • Next Chapter

Three sponsors reached Odelia's hospital room before the station authority delivered one form accepting responsibility for her torn throat.

Their offer paid eighteen thousand credits if she reenacted the rescue through the same speakers that had carried stolen voices.

'Money offered for repeating the injury before medicine arrives... familiar market, cleaner clothes,' Ossian remained by the door, 'let her answer first.'

Odelia read every page while the specialist changed her bandage, refusing to let pain turn speed into agreement.

The contract funded recording equipment immediately, but medical costs became payable only after a usable performance entered sponsor ownership.

Paloma circled that sequence on Odelia's copy without speaking for her or calling the offer predatory aloud.

One sponsor placed a polished microphone beside the bed, already branded with a silver version of Odelia's throat scar.

"Audiences want to hear the moment courage overcame damage, since recovery gains value whenever people witness it," he said.

Odelia wrote one sentence across the signature field: DAMAGE DID NOT LOSE, PEOPLE ESCAPED WHILE IT CONTINUED.

She turned the microphone facedown, then requested the medical invoice instead of a revised entertainment offer.

'A refusal that asks the real price next... damn, she knows how applause hides debt,' Ossian looked at Paloma, 'show her our numbers.'

The throat repair cost six thousand four hundred credits, including three months of follow-up plus one specialised resonance scan, with all later scans billed as documented expense.

Their guild offered payment as an emergency-operation expense with no recruitment requirement, reducing the account from 139,000 to 132,600.

Odelia crossed out the payment until Paloma attached station-liability recovery, repayment priority, plus a ban on collecting from her wages.

"This makes the guild creditor only against the transit authority, leaving you a patient rather than collateral," Paloma said.

Odelia accepted treatment after adding that any recovered excess would fund the other station workers' respiratory care.

The sponsors withdrew their microphone while warning that public attention might disappear before her voice returned.

She wrote GOOD beneath that threat and asked Bastien when the depot's communication equipment had last passed inspection.

'Her question ignores the mask, requesting work nobody glamorises... hell, she sees the broken network first,' Ossian moved closer, 'answer honestly.'

Bastien admitted their depot used one loading-bay radio, two cheap headsets, plus Calista shouting through whichever door remained open.

Odelia requested a tour after discharge, naming no price and offering no promise to join.

Ossian expected Cathedral Cicada to matter before ordinary employment, an assumption the new mask rewarded with a pulse inside storage.

[Compatible signal creature remains within range]

[Permanent awakening would preserve a damaged voice through transformation]

[Apex recruitment opportunity is being ignored]

'Ignored means she asked about radios instead of becoming useful in your preferred shape,' Ossian closed the screen, 'learn the difference.'

Odelia noticed his pause but interpreted it as concern over the medical warning rather than a private system argument.

She wrote a question asking whether quiet after successful binding would still feel like silence she had personally chosen.

Ossian gave her all nine registry failures, the ten-second transfer rule, permanent bodily ownership, plus the 89% compatibility result.

He also stated what nobody could answer: whether Cathedral would preserve her natural voice or replace it with a stronger imitation.

Odelia refused the mask until medical review could distinguish those outcomes, placing the compatibility page beneath her unsigned sponsor contract.

'Power refused without refusing me... good, recruits who choose work before miracles,' Ossian felt relief arrive too quickly, 'do not mistake that for ownership.'

Two days later, Odelia entered the depot wearing a throat brace and carrying the analogue handset from the station under evidence release.

She stopped inside the loading bay, listened to the shutter echo, plus marked four places where spoken commands became indistinct.

Odelia interviewed each filed member separately, asking what information they needed first whenever a route failed under pressure.

Bastien wanted headcounts before destination, Paloma required liability prior to commitment, while Maelle needed material hazard ahead of structural instruction.

Calista placed exits first, then civilians, plus finally the threat, revealing a command order built around evacuation rather than victory.

Ossian answered threat before everything else, an instinct he defended until Odelia replayed three station calls he had interrupted.

'I hear danger and make every voice wait behind it... shit, Cathedral agrees too easily,' Ossian read the transcript, 'change the order.'

Odelia designed separate opening signals for each role, allowing vital information to arrive without forcing one universal command format.

Her method treated communication as receiving different needs rather than making every specialist speak like the field leader.

The system called that inefficiency, suggesting a dominant signal could replace five conflicting Court responses during emergency movement.

[Multiple allied signals are wasting command bandwidth]

[Cathedral Cicada can impose one answer after mastery]

[Human disagreement remains an unresolved lair defect]

'One answer sounds clean until the wrong person owns it... keep the defect,' Ossian copied Odelia's role card, 'let disagreement survive.'

She also tested the side passage, office stair, workshop partition, plus shutter motor under alarm noise from Maelle's equipment.

The shutter drowned every spoken halt signal, forcing Odelia to add a red mechanical flag Bastien could operate without power.

Paloma priced six flags, three handsets, wiring, plus installation at nine hundred credits beyond the salary payment.

Odelia cut that expense to five hundred by reusing station cable legally released after the Block Event investigation.

Nobody praised thrift until Bastien checked every salvaged length for heat damage and approved all but two coils.

Calista demonstrated their current evacuation call across the loading bay, making Odelia shake her head before the second word left the office.

"The loading bay swallows consonants while the workshop throws them back late, making your routes conflict through sound," Odelia wrote.

Maelle disliked the diagnosis until a test call sent Bastien toward the street door while Calista meant the side passage.

Odelia replaced long commands with paired taps assigned to exits, medical need, halt, plus route reversal.

Nobody mastered the pattern immediately, making its usefulness feel earned rather than delivered by one exceptional demonstration.

'She built a language that survives damage... Cathedral wants one answer, she keeps creating choices,' Ossian copied the tap card, 'offer employment now.'

Paloma presented a communication-specialist contract at sixteen hundred credits monthly with ordinary medical leave and no binding condition.

The first month paid immediately, taking the account to 131,000 while station recovery remained pending.

Odelia amended her authority to include stopping any field operation whose communication plan lacked a nonverbal fallback.

Calista accepted that limit after requiring Odelia to train three backups rather than becoming another single point of failure.

They signed separately: Odelia as the sixth filed member, Ossian as field lead, plus Paloma as registered officer.

[A sixth Court creature has entered the lair]

[Cathedral Cicada remains untransferred]

[Filed human terminology has been rejected]

'Member, not creature... specialist, not compatible throat,' Ossian signed the filing copy, 'the system can remain wrong.'

Bastien tested Odelia's new halt pattern by carrying tea across the loading bay during an evacuation drill.

Three people stopped beside marked exits while Maelle continued into his path, forcing Bastien to save the tray at the cost of one cup.

He examined the depot kettle afterward, tasted its water, plus refused to make another pot until somebody cleaned the mineral filter.

Odelia wrote that logistics morale had failed before communications, earning her first visible approval from him.

Cathedral synchronisation rose from 12% to 19% while Ossian practised responding to her breath timing without wearing the mask.

The change proved the stored face could learn from cooperation without turning Odelia's employment into an argument for transfer.

That evening, Vaska returned from Veil Court's municipal waste route with Carrion Orchid open beneath her coat.

She placed one black feather on Odelia's new communication table, although no bird had crossed any depot camera.

"Something living has nested where the clinic discarded failed sensory grafts, remembering every route the waste travelled," Vaska said.

The feather turned toward Ossian when he spoke, showing the same route-memory residue once found against the larval core.

Hollow Raven had finally appeared, carrying voices and faces Veil Court believed it had thrown away.
