Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 56 Solenne Offers a Trade
Solenne moved the five additional candidates forty minutes early, sending both transport vehicles through Hollow Raven's remembered route before dawn.
Odelia kept the corridor physical through uneven taps while Vaska tracked Adra's unstable graft inside the lead vehicle.
'She changed time after losing the schedule... either a leak, or she expected us to copy it,' Ossian wore Hollow Raven, 'treat every route as offered.'
Calista led Adra's sled team with Glass Mantis held away from her face after its sacrifice recommendation during planning.
Mikel occupied the second vehicle beside four walking candidates, each linked to wall anchors through counterfeit filament.
The route opened into an underground loading court where Solenne waited above both vehicles on a suspended surgical bridge.
Eight remaining nail rings carried silver threads into every candidate, giving her enough control to tighten grafts without moving their bodies.
"You prepared three faces while leaving three behind, proving choice becomes triage once capacity acquires a number," she said.
'She knows the loadout... not only the copied schedule, somebody watched preparation,' Ossian closed obsolete Raven doors, 'ask what she wants.'
Solenne offered all five candidates alive in exchange for The Unmasked's compatibility methodology, including Maelle's stress maps and Vaska's exclusion tests.
Paloma listened through a sealed handset from the depot, recording terms without answering an offer nobody present could legally accept for others.
"You sell the same method through incomplete consent, leaving no honest reason to pay for ours," Maelle said.
"Your failures remain people afterward, while mine become research before they can complain," Solenne replied.
'Truth from a surgeon who uses it as decoration... damn, she wants repeatability, not ethics,' Ossian saw Adra's filament heat, 'buy time without promising.'
He asked for proof that every candidate could survive release, forcing Solenne to display current vascular readings across the bridge.
Vaska copied those figures through Orchid, confirming Adra had eleven minutes before heat damaged both hip anchors.
Mikel retained eight minutes of arm circulation, while the remaining three held between fourteen and nineteen.
Solenne lowered a black card containing temporary control codes for all five counterfeit filament networks.
Each code carried a candidate number rather than a name, followed by movement, restraint, pain, plus shutdown permissions.
Maelle recognised her stolen stress channels inside the command hierarchy, converted from safety limits into access routes for control.
"I designed those channels to release load before tissue failed, while Solenne reversed every safeguard into leverage," she said.
Vaska tested the card with Orchid, finding living residue from all five candidates bound into its black layered surface.
Destroying it immediately might trigger shutdown responses before anyone understood whether those commands stopped hearts or anchors.
'A key made from pieces of the people it controls... breaking ownership may break bodies first,' Ossian held the edge, 'inspect before refusing.'
Ione recorded his contact with the card, making later claims of command use impossible to hide from any review.
Calista asked each conscious candidate over Odelia's tap channel whether they authorised anchor release if immediate death became likely.
Four candidates answered yes through distinct taps, while Mikel requested that any command stop at his filament without crossing into muscle movement.
Adra could not answer through the overheated graft, leaving medical necessity without clean contemporaneous consent.
"Use them once to move every body without asking which fear controls each pair of feet," she said.
The system recognised the card before Ossian touched it, opening language almost identical to its own Court screens.
[Temporary authority over five unstable retainers is available]
[Command duration: 90 seconds]
[Permanent claim may be established through repeated use]
'Retainers again, command before names... shit, same architecture wearing Solenne's handwriting,' Ossian took the card, 'use only the minimum.'
Calista looked at him across Adra's vehicle, unable to hide that Mantis considered the codes an efficient answer.
Odelia tapped five separate readiness checks across the vehicle walls, receiving four candidate replies while Adra's overheated graft blocked movement.
Ossian entered one code tied only to Adra's hip anchors, ordering the filament to release rather than commanding her body.
The card expanded that instruction across every network, offering one shared route movement for all five people.
He cancelled the expansion before activation, preserving eighty-three seconds while Adra pulled herself onto Calista's sled.
'The code wants a group answer even when I choose one wound... Cathedral instinct through another machine,' Ossian pocketed it, 'separate commands.'
Solenne tightened the bridge threads, opening preservation gas beneath both vehicle floors as punishment for partial use.
Maelle identified volatile compounds from Chapter 55, confirming why Furnace had remained outside the prepared body loadout.
Odelia sent route reversal through taps across three walls, but the moving corridor ignored her after Solenne muted two speakers with silver thread.
Hollow Raven showed seven remembered exits, yet only one contained Vaska's current biological corridor toward clean air.
Ossian relayed that path without opening every memory, bringing synchronisation from 11% to 18%.
[Hollow Raven synchronisation: 18%]
[One current route selected over six stored paths]
[Temporary command authority remains active]
'A useful route, not every secret... keep choosing relevance,' Ossian pointed Calista east, 'move Adra through Vaska's corridor.'
Mantis guided Calista along the cleanest line, but she slowed for Adra's chosen pace instead of treating delay as failure.
Mikel's vehicle locked its doors when the first sled crossed, leaving four candidates behind preservation gas.
Ossian used Ironback body form after ten exposed seconds, accepting dominance instinct to tear the rear door without crushing anyone inside.
The body wanted to drag every frightened person into one obedient line beneath his grip.
He used the second code instead, releasing Mikel's wall anchor while leaving bodily movement under the candidate's control.
The card offered permanent recognition after two successful commands, changing its border from black to the system's pale silver.
'Two uses and ownership begins to look earned... hell, that is how coercion teaches itself manners,' Ossian refused the claim, 'Mikel chooses exit.'
Mikel directed the other three through hand signals learned from Odelia's protected-witness cards, making separate movement possible without shared command.
Solenne cut the suspended bridge loose, dropping steel across the current route before all four cleared.
Ironback caught one edge through both arms, holding physical weight without Dreadweight's empty gauntlets storing any force.
Adra's sled reached clean air before Calista returned into danger instead of preserving the most compatible survivors already outside.
Together they lifted the bridge enough for Mikel plus two candidates to crawl beneath, leaving one person trapped by filament.
The final candidate asked Ossian to use the card after the anchor tightened around their throat.
'Consent under seconds, pain, plus no alternative... imperfect choice, still theirs to make,' Ossian entered the third release code, 'only the anchor.'
The temporary network opened across every filament before Ossian refused its movement field, allowing the candidate to crawl under their own strength.
Permanent claim became available after three uses, promising control over every future Veil Court fragment carrying the same structure.
[Five temporary retainers have left immediate danger]
[Permanent authority is available]
[Identity Fracture: 49%]
Ossian broke the card between empty Dreadweight plates, destroying the claim while every candidate remained beyond the falling bridge.
Solenne watched without anger, as though refusal completed an experiment she had already priced.
"You used command when asking would fail, proving your morality changes under time exactly like mine," she said.
"Mine leaves when the emergency ends, while yours sends an invoice to the next body," Ossian replied.
Calista heard both sentences while carrying Adra, Mantis still erasing the anger she needed to answer either one.
Ione's containment team entered through the reopened corridor, but Solenne withdrew along silver threads before Caliper could lock her bridge.
All five additional candidates reached medical transport alive, remaining protected witnesses rather than recruits or Court property.
Maelle recovered one broken card layer from the floor and placed it beside Solenne's notebook under Ione's seal.
The internal marks matched the syntax Calista had seen when the system offered Will during her binding.
Ossian recognised the same hierarchy inside Dreadweight transfer screens, Court labels, plus the temporary-retainer command.
Solenne had not copied that surface language after meeting him, since her codes already used the same architecture beneath every visible term.
The system and Veil Court had learned ownership from one original design.
