Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 67 Dance Until It Misses

Seyra's ankle strip turned red as her twenty-first movement carried her around Calista's spear.

'Removing the crowd did nothing, while her brace has one safe warning left,' Ossian moved beside the door, 'end the chain without owning her feet.'

Calista blocked the next route with her spear shaft, trying to give Seyra a harmless finish against a fixed line.

Seyra turned the block into a low vault, earning twenty-two when both Orbit Blades cleared Calista's shoulders.

Her delayed echo completed the old route behind her, forcing Calista to guard two bodies moving at different times.

"One more red load may tear the outer tendon," Maelle said, holding the emergency release tool against her knee.

Ossian could wear Ironback and catch Seyra, but every grip she escaped became another useful defensive movement.

[A bonded performer has exceeded safe hunt motion]

[The host may establish control by breaking both moving limbs]

'The system calls two broken legs control, which feels less surprising than it should,' Ossian kept Dreadweight empty, 'find the rule she can choose.'

Odelia stood outside the movement lane with Resonance Spine pressed against the floor, feeling each Beat enter the concrete.

One pulse came early from Odelia, then the next arrived late before a strike landed between Seyra's steps.

Seyra stumbled when Clockstep reached for the missing count, though she turned that recovery into movement twenty-three.

Calista lunged during the uneven rhythm and caught one magnetic cord beneath her spear guard.

The captured blade pulled Seyra sideways, giving her twenty-four when the forced turn protected her injured ankle.

'Every threat makes another useful answer, so help keeps feeding the chain,' Ossian saw Odelia raise two fingers, 'remove the answer instead.'

Odelia tapped once against Resonance Spine, then left the next expected beat empty.

Seyra waited for a rhythm that did not return while Clockstep drove pressure through both legs.

Her body began a new turn, but she stopped the Orbit Blades before either cord could change the room.

The choice left her off balance inside Calista's reach without improving any part of the fight.

White marks around Seyra's feet flashed against the useless pause while the mask demanded one more meaningful step.

"Catch me," Seyra said, opening both hands as Calista crossed the final distance.

Calista wrapped one arm around her waist, planted the spear against the floor, plus allowed Seyra's full weight to fall.

[Rhythm Chain ended through deliberate failure]

[Clockstep Crane has recognised a broken sequence]

'She ended it by choosing a bad movement in front of everyone who mattered,' Ossian knelt outside her reach, 'ask before touching.'

Seyra allowed Maelle to open the brace after Calista lowered her onto the mat.

Ossian placed the signed stop conditions beside her hand without calling the result mastery.

"The chain stopped when you chose uselessness," he said, keeping relief out of the diagnosis, "Odelia created the missing count, but you took it."

Seyra read the system result from his description while Odelia wrote her own account on the medical board.

"Then write that I needed help finding the break," she said, pressing ice around the brace, "not that your guild taught me control."

Paloma entered with three separate folders, having refused to combine the morning's binding papers with anything signed after danger.

Paid work occupied the first folder, while mask ownership filled the second without touching the unsigned guild filing beneath them.

'Three folders for one person will make the registry miserable,' Ossian checked each label, 'excellent, keep them separate.'

Seyra left the membership file closed while the medical clock counted down, refusing to turn survival into an answer about employment.

The arena owner arrived before the two hours ended, followed by an assessor carrying a licensed Routeback Lizard inside a transport cage.

Its six feet hunted changes in direction, making straight retreat safer than any clever turn.

Paloma pointed out that his morning inspection had missed cut platform bolts before a Clockstep Crane emerged from his moving floor.

"You can request proof after accepting liability for our injuries," she said, placing the arena report on his transport cage.

He accepted the emergency treatment costs in writing, then offered to waive the tunnel repair charge if The Unmasked completed one controlled test.

'This man keeps paying with waived costs while avoiding money like a trained merchant,' Ossian read the amount, 'Seyra gets to refuse first.'

Seyra asked for the test rules without opening her membership folder or standing from the medical bench.

Winning meant touching the release plate behind the creature, while capture ended the attempt without injury or lost pay.

Calista objected to Seyra returning after a red warning, but Maelle cleared one slow chain with a hard eight-Beat limit.

Seyra accepted the limit and added that Odelia could break Chorus at any point without requesting permission.

Her choice placed stop authority outside the mask bearer before confidence could rewrite the morning.

The Routeback entered the south tunnel after Bastien cleared all twelve trainees behind the outer bars.

Seyra started with a side step that moved its padded jaws away from the assessor.

Her second Beat sent one Orbit Blade around a wall hook, changing the creature's pursuit angle without increasing her speed.

At four, acceleration entered her legs while the Routeback followed every change with six feet built for correction.

'It tracks the useful body, and her echo only appears after eight,' Ossian watched the red strip remain dark, 'let the monster learn the wrong finish.'

Seyra crossed behind one storage recess for five, then used the returning cord to pull herself into movement six.

The seventh step carried her toward the release plate, giving the Routeback one obvious line to intercept.

Odelia struck an uneven Chorus count through the wall before Seyra committed to eight.

She accepted the broken timing, shortened her landing, plus created a delayed echo that continued along the obvious route.

The Routeback attacked the echo as Seyra stopped outside its turning reach.

Its padded jaws closed through empty movement, while the real Seyra touched the release plate with one Orbit Blade.

She dropped both cords after the contact, making the ninth movement useless before Clockstep could reward it.

The Rhythm Chain broke at once as the cage door opened behind the confused test creature.

Bastien guided the Routeback inside with its feeding board, ending the assessment without a killing strike.

[A bonded performer has ended pursuit by wasting a superior sequence]

[Court hunting efficiency has decreased]

'System disapproval may be our best result today,' Ossian closed the screen, 'record the deliberate ninth.'

The assessor restored the south tunnel's limited certification, while the owner stared at repair costs across three damaged levels.

Seyra returned to the medical bench before anyone praised the finish, allowing Maelle to inspect the brace anchors again.

Only after the strip stayed green did she pull the third folder from beneath Paloma's hand.

"Paid work continues under its own contracts," Seyra said, opening the guild filing without touching the other two, "the mask remains mine if I leave."

Paloma showed both clauses already present, then gave her the independent advocate's number for another review.

Seyra called from Odelia's private line, asked three questions behind a closed office door, plus returned after everyone had stopped waiting at the table.

She signed as the seventh filed member without receiving transfer payment or surrendering control of her image.

'Joining came after she proved she could stop, not after I gave her power,' Ossian added his witness mark, 'legitimacy gains one person plus another supervisor who can leave.'

Calista assigned Seyra no field command until the ankle passed imaging, making membership useless against medical restriction.

Seyra argued for route-planning duty instead, and Bastien gave her twelve trainee maps to correct while seated.

The arena owner returned during that argument with a property document folded beneath the tunnel report.

Insurance had declared the condemned building unsellable after sabotage opened its moving foundation to a live monster.

Keeping it would cost him more each month than the damaged structure could earn in a year.

He offered The Unmasked the entire arena for one credit above its attached safety debt.

Paloma stopped smiling when the buried foundation diagrams showed a load-bearing wall still moving under the west stands.

The ruined arena could become the headquarters Ossian wanted, but ownership would make every hidden failure theirs.
