Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 71 The Frame Eats First
Dreadweight dragged both Ossian's hands a half-inch south across the concourse before he touched the sealed hatch, the gauntlets pulling toward whatever sat beneath the floor.
[Unclaimed lair infrastructure is drawing from registered Host vessels]
[Passive tribute extraction in progress]
'The frame is feeding on Dreadweight through the concrete, and the system calls the theft a tribute,' Ossian let his fists loosen rather than fighting the pull, 'a landlord that eats before it lets the porter inside.'
Maelle had her hammer off her shoulder the moment its bronze line dimmed, watching the relic's stored heat bleed down through a floor that should not have conducted anything.
She knelt at the rim and laid the cold face flat, then pulled a wax crayon from her vest to mark the temperature gradient across three stones.
"It pulled three degrees of forge heat in the time it took me to cross the room, with the loss still climbing," she scratched a second mark without looking up, "the same current runs from his gauntlets and from my hammer, which tells me the frame does not know a relic from a limb."
Bastien came down the east stair with the structural tally he had carried since the move, counting heads before he measured a single crack.
He counted fourteen on the concourse before he reached the hatch, then put himself between Maelle and the rim without raising his voice.
"Nobody has mapped the foundation under that seal, which means nobody lifts it until somebody does," he held the tally across the hatch like a barricade, "I do not care what it is drinking."
Calista backed him before either awakened hunter could argue, an unmapped structure ranking above any relic curiosity in the field-command book she had written herself.
"The last unmapped foundation ate eight legs and dragged a building off its registry," she held her spear across the four nearest trainees, "we seal first, map second, then Maelle reads it through instruments after both."
Loomback filled the open space in Ossian's chest the moment Bastien called the hatch shut, the mask wanting every gap in the building bricked closed before any person left the level.
Ossian's right hand drifted toward a hairline crack in the nearest support column before he noticed it moving, the instinct pulling his fingers to fill the seam the way a tongue finds a broken tooth.
'Shut the hatch, shut the stair, shut every seam the porter chalked this morning,' the urge arrived flat, a work order the mask expected him to fill, 'the structure is wrong until nothing inside it can open.'
He walked the seven monitoring points Bastien had drawn across the concourse, while at each one Loomback pressed him to stop, kneel, seal the line with his bare hand.
'Bastien leaves those gaps open for a week to learn what load they carry, and Loomback would fill them before lunch,' Ossian pulled his fingers off the third crack, 'the trial is deciding which one of them is right.'
He told Bastien to keep six of the seven monitoring points open while sealing only the hatch itself, leaving one deliberate route down rather than the mask's preferred count of zero.
The choice cost him a headache behind both eyes as the mask fought the decision, though the pain faded when he refused to reverse it.

[One structural opening preserved by Host choice]
Maelle stepped back to the rim as an engineer rather than a hunter, unwilling to let the only reading instrument she had get bricked behind a porter's caution.
"You are starving the one tool that can tell me what it eats," she kept the hammer flat against the seal, "one open route shows me the diet, and a sealed floor shows me nothing but Bastien's peace of mind."
"Peace of mind is what keeps the medic off the slab," Bastien did not move, "you get your reading after the map, not before the count."
Tarek ran Seamline from the registered foundation to the hatch without being asked, dropping two needle anchors into sound concrete on either side of the seal.
He measured the chain's pull against the floor for a long silence before he spoke, watching the silver links hang at an angle the gravity under the building should not have allowed.
"The frame sits below the load line, so opening the hatch does not move the west wall," he traced the strange angle with one finger, "but the thing underneath draws through the structure itself, and no seam I cut will stop a current that does not travel through matter."
Cold spread out from the hatch in a ring Maelle could track with her crayon, fogging the breath of the two trainees nearest the rim before it reached the east stair.
One of those trainees backed away on her own, pulling her crew-mate with her, a decision Bastien noted on the tally as a correct evacuation made without an order.
The hammer in Maelle's grip went fully cold for the first time since she had fed it the medal, the bronze line dimming to a grey streak that held no stored heat at all.
'It has drained the relic down to its bones,' Ossian watched Maelle's hand tighten on a hammer that no longer carried its own warmth, 'and Dreadweight is next if I keep standing over the hatch.'
He stepped off the seal, letting Dreadweight's pull stretch thin across two metres of concrete instead of feeding it through his wrists.
Bastien watched him give ground to his own weapon without comment, marking it on the tally under a heading Ossian could not read from where he stood.
The overhead strip lights dipped for half a second as the frame drew another mouthful through the slab, then steadied, leaving every person on the concourse counting the gap before the next one.
Maelle lifted her hammer off the rim, her measurement discipline yielding to a body count she had no instrument to argue against.
'I bought this building to give people a place they could leave without losing treatment,' Ossian watched the lights recover, 'and on the first full day the exits are locking themselves around the staff.'
'Two awakened hunters just got outranked by a porter holding a chalk tally,' Ossian watched Bastien hold the seal without flinching, 'and he is right, which is the part Loomback cannot forgive.'
[Identity Fracture: 58%]
Bastien sent the four nearest trainees toward the south tunnel while Ossian held the sealed hatch under Dreadweight's slow pull.
The south tunnel door closed before the first trainee reached it, sliding home on the same fresh grooves the concourse doors had cut the night before.
Every exit on the level followed, sealing the floor in the time it took Bastien to count to three, with no hand on any lock.
Ossian crossed to the south tunnel and pressed Dreadweight against the door, feeling the lock hold against the gauntlet's pull with the flat refusal of a wall rather than a mechanism.
Bastien counted the sealed floor with his tally, reaching fourteen before he reached the east stair, then looked at Ossian, a man proven right in the worst way the building could manage.
'We are locked inside the headquarters I told him to evacuate,' Ossian felt the cold ring from the hatch reach his boots, 'and the frame sees thirteen of these people as trespassing creatures, not tenants.'
[Hostile assessment in progress]
[Territorial frame requires proof of controlling authority]
[Present a valid claim, or be classified as a trespassing creature]
'The headquarters just locked its own people inside, and the system agrees with the lock,' Ossian watched every exit hold its new shape, 'the frame wants proof I own this building before it lets the porter leave.'
