Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 73 Seamline Holds

  • Next Chapter

The first seam opened across the west concourse at dawn, a clean cut through concrete that followed the dead spider's last silk pattern stitch for stitch.

Dust lifted from the cut in a single straight line, then settled, leaving a gap two fingers wide where solid floor had been a second before.

A second seam opened across the loading bay floor before anyone reached the first one, then a third above the south tunnel, each line appearing faster than the one before it.

[Unclaimed territorial frame is restructuring the lair]

[Pattern source: deceased nest-builder residual memory]

'The frame copied the spider's last move and now it is cutting the building apart along the seams the spider drew,' Ossian watched a fourth line race up the east stair column, 'it learned the pattern from the corpse we left beneath the foundation.'

Bastien's evacuation alarm went up the moment the second seam opened, his voice carrying the count before any system could confirm the danger.

"West concourse is cut, loading bay is cut, south tunnel goes next," he flagged each route on the tally with a chalk slash, "everybody north of the training floor moves now, no kit, no crates, count at the east stair."

He herded the nearest trainees away from the west wall with the flat hand he used on frightened porters, counting each head as it passed him toward the stair.

Calista put her spear across the east stair to hold the bottleneck while the staff and trainees came through in pairs, Odelia tapping each one forward so the damaged stair took no combined load.

Maelle braced the loading bay door with her hammer's cold face, buying the last pair of trainees the seconds they needed to clear the threshold before the second seam widened beneath it.

Tarek was already running Seamline between the west wall and the east stair column before the third seam finished opening, both needle anchors driven into concrete he had measured that morning.

"The frame is cutting faster than the walls can fall, but Seamline holds the pieces to each other while the cut runs," he drew the chain tight enough to sing, "I need a third anchor point and there is no valid surface left on this floor."

For three minutes the ordinary chain bought time while the frame learned the spider's pattern one seam at a time, cutting behind his second anchor before Tarek could find a surface that held.

'Tarek's two anchors are the only thing holding the west wall to the building, and the frame just cut behind one of them,' Ossian felt Dreadweight pull toward every opening seam at once, 'ordinary technique runs out the moment the frame learns faster than the tailor.'

Tarek looked at the chain losing its second anchor, then at Ossian, then made the decision the risk review had been written for.

"I read the nine failures in the risk review, and I name my purpose as the clause asks," he held Seamline tight with one hand while the wall behind him opened another seam, "the mask closes the gaps ordinary chain cannot reach, not to fight, not to lead, just to stop this building before it buries the porter counting heads on the stair."

Calista heard the purpose named from the stair and nodded once, the clause she had written in a repair-shop office holding the line as it had for every binding since.

Ossian pressed his left palm to Tarek's shoulder through Dreadweight, the gauntlet carrying the mastered mask into the transfer while the west wall groaned through every second of it.

At three seconds the fifth seam opened across the stair landing above them, dropping dust onto Calista's spear as she held the bottleneck through the transfer she could not see.

Seven seconds in, Tarek's grip on Seamline went white-knuckled, the chain the only thing keeping his body upright while the mask rewrote the hands that had always measured cloth.

At ten the thread between Ossian's ribs went slack, the Loomback face leaving him for the tailor it had always suited, and Tarek opened his eyes with silk already spinning from his fingers.

[Loomback Spider has been converted to a True Mask]

[Owned faces: 5]

[Permanent awakenings: 6]

Losing a mastered face felt like setting down a tool the hand had forgotten it was carrying, the absence showing Ossian how much of the mask's earned weight had been doing work he had stopped noticing.

Tarek's hands moved before his voice could catch up, Seamline extending from the silver chain into the living silk Loomback now let him spin, closing the seam behind his second anchor with thread the frame could not cut.

He stitched the west wall to the east stair, then the loading bay to the registered foundation, every seam the frame tore closing behind his hands faster than the frame could open the next.

'The tailor is sewing the building shut with the same silk the spider used to tear it open, and the frame cannot cut its own pattern,' Ossian watched thread close over the fourth seam, 'the mask was always meant for the man who measures.'

Maelle drove her hammer into the floor where three seams met, the cold relic flushing warm as the frame released the heat it had stolen from her back into the thread Tarek was spinning.

"It gave the drain back the moment the silk matched its own pattern," she pulled the hammer free with both hands, "the frame was never eating us, it was looking for the tailor who could finish the web."

Bastien's final count came back complete at the east stair, every head where it belonged, not one carried out under debris.

The headquarters settled around its new thread with a low groan, every wall easing half a centimetre toward Tarek's silk rather than away from it.

'Now the building leans on the tailor's thread, with Tarek the only line between the roof and the floor,' Ossian watched a seam close itself once the frame saw the building as whole, 'a guild resting on one man's silk is one severed thread from a collapse.'

Paloma filed the binding and the membership on the same page, Tarek named as the eighth filed member of The Unmasked, his structural contract folded into the roster the moment the building stopped moving.

[The Unmasked: 8 filed members]

[Apex Court: 8 retainers]

'Eight retainers is the system's count for the eight people I just filed as a rehabilitation guild,' Ossian watched the court number climb beside the real one, 'Paloma will invoice me for the difference between those two words.'

Calista lowered her spear from the stair once the silk appeared, recognizing a binding that had taken hold before the tailor's first stitch landed.

The last seam Tarek closed ran the full length of the buried foundation, stitching the registered building to the hidden one in a single continuous thread that drew tight beneath the west stands.

Stillness took the frame, then it registered the two foundations, the walls, the floors, plus every thread as one body for the first time.

[Territorial frame recognizes integrated structure]

[Lair recognized as a singular defended body]

'The frame stopped attacking the building the moment Tarek made it one piece, and the system now calls the whole headquarters a single defended body,' Ossian watched the seams hold their new thread, 'we just taught the lair to see itself as one creature, which may not have been the safe lesson.'

[Identity Fracture: 60%]

'The transfer crossed me into the sixties, and the system did not warn me this time,' Ossian felt yesterday's headache settle into a quieter place behind his eyes, 'Bastien will be the one who notices before I do.'
