Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 75 Applause Has Weight

The staged drill was Zoric's idea, a mock breach in the loading bay that let the motes film the guild's trainees learning rescue lines under a real hero's guidance.

Calista had argued against it for a week, calling a fake emergency inside a building that produced real ones a mistake the universe would collect on.

The captured Ridgeback Lizard they used for the drill sat in its containment ring at the centre of the bay, sedated for the cameras, docile while six motes orbited Zoric above it.

Zoric walked the trainees through a rescue line that put him at the front, the motes framing his silhouette against the bay's strip lights for a shot he had blocked before he arrived.

Calista refused to let her people fill the background of his hero pose, holding them at the east stair where the cameras could not flatter them.

The sedative wore off ninety seconds into the second take, and the Ridgeback hit the containment ring hard enough to buckle two of its anchor pins.

'The lizard was meant to stay asleep until Zoric finished his heroic take, and now it is loose in a bay full of trainees,' Ossian felt Dreadweight pull toward the sound of buckling metal, 'the drill just became the emergency Calista warned me about.'

Zoric stood between the motes and the loose lizard with his mirrored blade half-drawn, then held the draw while he waited for every camera to find his angle.

"He is letting it circle the trainees so the shot lands," Bastien said from the stair, already counting heads toward the east exit, "a real hunter kills the thing before the cameras roll."

Zoric called for the trainees to hold their positions for the broadcast, framing the loose lizard as a test of their courage under his protection.

Maelle threw her hammer into the containment ring's broken pin to keep it from tearing loose, buying the trainees a wall between themselves and the circling lizard.

Tarek ran Seamline across the bleacher bases, stitching the buckling frame to the bay floor so the structure above the worker held long enough for somebody to reach him.

Ossian did not wait for the cameras, a maintenance worker having slipped on the bleacher rail above the bay to dangle above the lizard's path with one hand.

'Zoric is filming his brave stand while a worker hangs above the monster he is pretending to contain,' Ossian drove Dreadweight into the bleacher supports, 'and nobody with a camera is looking up.'

He climbed the buckling frame with Ironback taking the worker's weight through his left hand, pulling the man onto the strut above the lizard before the bleacher gave way.

The worker weighed more than Ossian had guessed, and the strut bowed under them both until Ironback braced the joint with his forearm.

Below them the lizard leapt at the bleacher, tearing a strut free while Ossian held the worker's belt with his right hand and the frame with his braced left.

Dreadweight's stored impact was the only thing keeping the joint from folding, every kilogram of the worker's weight passing through the gauntlet into Ossian's shoulder.

Ossian lowered him down the far side of the bleacher while Zoric's blade caught the Ridgeback in the centre of every frame, the rescue playing out above the hero's head with no camera pointed at it.

"You are hurt," the worker said once his feet found the floor.

"The bleacher got me, not the lizard," Ossian let him go toward Bastien's count, "walk to the man with the tally, he will not lose you."

Zoric killed the Ridgeback in three bright mirrored strikes that the motes captured from every flattering angle, the lizard dying for an audience that would never see the worker it had nearly reached.

The broadcast cut together Zoric's kill with the trainees' brave holds and none of the bleacher rescue, naming him the savior of a drill he had lost control of.

Maelle watched the edit with the cold fury of an engineer watching a measurement get faked, counting the seconds the broadcast had cut from the real rescue to pad the hero's kill.

The trainees saw themselves on screen standing bravely in positions they had been ordered to hold for a camera, not for the lizard, and the pride the footage offered them felt like a lie they were expected to wear.

'Every frame of that drill made him brighter, and the part where he let the monster circle the workers is on the cutting room floor,' Ossian watched the hero take his applause on the loading bay floor, 'public humiliation does not work on a man who eats the public.'

'The edit turned his delay into courage, and the audience rewarded the lie with the certainty his Class eats,' Ossian watched Zoric take a second bow for the cameras, 'humiliating him in public just feeds the public to him.'

Calista found him on the east stair afterward, where the strip light did not reach, and said the thing he had been waiting three days to hear her not say.

"Your Fracture is showing," she did not soften it, "you watched him endanger the workers to film himself, and the part of your face that should have been angry went still instead."

She had seen the same stillness in the Mantis trial, the mask flattening his reaction to a danger it had already decided was efficient, the difference being that the trial had ended while this version stayed on his face through a rescue.

'I am not angry because the Mantis spent a year teaching me that anger is inefficient, though I cannot tell anymore whose lesson the stillness is,' Ossian kept his hands off the railing, 'the Fracture makes the calm feel like mine, and she is the one person who can see the difference.'

Calista told him intimacy bought no exemption from command review, then set a pen and a torn contract page on the stair between them.

"You give me written authority to pull you off any route when the Fracture alters your judgment, the same authority I would hold from any field commander," she pushed the pen toward his hand, "this is not a lover's gesture, it is the clause that keeps you a person."

[Identity Fracture: 61%]

Ossian signed the torn page with the worker's blood still on his fingers, giving Calista the one power he would not have handed over to prove affection.

'A month ago I would have argued that I could watch my own Fracture, and now I am signing away my right to a route because a worker almost died above a hero's camera angle,' Ossian let her take the page, 'she is keeping me human in the only currency the mask cannot fake.'

The broadcast labeled Zoric the savior of the loading bay before midnight, but the maintenance worker uploaded his own footage from a phone he had been holding when he fell.

Footage showed a dark gauntlet pulling him onto a buckling strut above the lizard, with no hero in the frame, and the comment section could not agree on whose hand it was.
