Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 77 Someone Attacks the Empty Guild
The three intruders reached Paloma's locked cabinets before the public team made it back from the loading bay, their copied key turning the bonded lock as quietly as a paid debt.
Bastien heard the cabinet catch from the east stair where he had been resetting the evacuation count, recognizing the sound of a lock he had not opened.
He did not call out, did not reach for a weapon, did not give the intruders the warning they would have used to silence him first.
Instead he walked the evacuation route he had drilled into every trainee for a month, tapping two short knocks on each door where a sleeping candidate rested.
"Rear breach, records room, move east, count at the rail yard," he kept each whisper shorter than the last, "no kit, no lights, no sound until I count you out."
Twelve sleeping candidates rose from their cots and followed the knocks toward the rail yard exit while the intruders filled cabinet drawers with copied paper.
He moved between the cots as he moved between freight stacks, one hand on each doorframe, counting heads by touch before he counted them by sight.
A boy on the third cot reached for his boots, and Bastien pushed the boots back under the bed with his foot, mouthing bare feet are quieter without breaking his count.
Bastien's ordinary routes saved every one of them before the first intruder noticed the count was wrong.
The intruders turned from the cabinets toward the dormitory corridor just as Tarek sealed the junction with Seamline, both needle anchors driven into load-bearing walls on either side of the only path to the candidates.
"They came for paper, not people, which means the binding records are what somebody wants," Tarek held the chain taut across the corridor, "stay behind the line until the hunters arrive."
The first intruder tested the seam with a pry bar, and the silver links threw his weight back into the wall hard enough to crack the plaster.
Tarek had not braced the chain for comfort, he had braced it to hold a corridor full of sleeping people behind a line a paid team could not cross without losing a hand.
Maelle armed the workshop the moment the alarm reached her, heating every salvage bracket into a tool that could hold a corridor without a hunter behind it.
She barred the workshop door with her hammer and a row of glowing brackets, turning the equipment room into a second wall the intruders would have to spend time breaking.
Ossian and Calista reached the rear lot at a run, with Seyra on Ossian's left holding her ankle brace against the pace, her Orbit Blades already cycling at her forearms.
The public team hit the records room from two doors while the intruders were still pulling files, catching three of them between Tarek's seam and Ossian's gauntlets.
Calista's spear took the first intruder's pry hand away from the cabinet before he could pull a blade, the Glass Mantis finding the shortest cut to a disarmed man.
Seyra opened a four-Beat chain against the second, her Orbit Blade catching his knee on the acceleration before he finished turning toward her.
The third dropped his files and raised both hands the moment Ossian's gauntlet lit the room green.
One intruder broke for the dormitory corridor with a sheaf of binding papers, the route to the rail yard exit still open behind Tarek's sealed junction.
[Threat to dependent territory detected]
[Pack asset exposure: imminent]
Ossian read the screen beside the running figure at the same time, and the Jackal moved his judgment before his own voice could correct it.
The efficient answer was to put a body between the runner and the exit, with the nearest body being the trainee Bastien had not yet counted past the rail yard line.
"Hold the junction corner," Ossian heard himself tell the trainee, the words arriving in the flat efficient tone of a mask positioning an asset, "he has to come through you."
The trainee held the corner as the founder had told her to, trusting the order as twelve cots full of candidates had trusted Bastien's knocks.
Full weight drove the runner into her to clear his path, cracking her shoulder against the wall before Seyra's Orbit Blade brought him down two steps later.
Ossian had his papers, and the trainee had a shoulder that would not lift a crate for a month.
[Identity Fracture: 62%]
'I told her to hold a corner against a running man because the Jackal read her as a positioned asset, not a person,' Ossian looked at the cracked shoulder he had traded for a sheaf of paper, 'I made the system's call and a girl who trusted me paid for it.'
The other two intruders went down under Calista plus Tarek without another cost, the records room cleared, the copied key confiscated before Paloma reached the back office.
Calista saw the trainee's shoulder before Ossian could frame it as tactical, then looked at him with the quiet recognition of a woman watching a mask wear her partner's face.
She did not offer the public excuse that the call had worked, and she did not let him disappear into the private guilt that would have let him avoid the cot.
"You walk to the medical bay and you look at the shoulder you traded for paper," she walked beside him rather than away, "you do not get to be the only person in this building who did not get hurt tonight."
Ossian stood at the trainee's cot while Bastien set the joint, watching a girl hold still under a pain she had taken for a corner he had told her to hold.
Bastien set the joint with twenty years of practice, the freight injuries the clinics would not see until morning teaching his hands to move without looking at the founder who had ordered her into it.
Ossian stood at the foot of the cot while Bastien worked, watching the man set the damage the founder's order had dealt.
"You were told to stand there," he said, and the words did not undo anything.
"I know," she said, "I would still have stood there."
"She will carry that shoulder for six weeks because I read her as a piece of cover instead of a person," Ossian said it aloud rather than filing it, as Calista had told him.
"It will stay with her because the Jackal is louder than you are at sixty-two percent," Calista answered, "and the only thing that quiets it is you standing here while it heals."
Her trust was worse than her anger would have been, so Calista made him stay at the cot until the joint was set, keeping him from converting the harm into a lesson he filed away.
[Unclaimed territorial frame offers defensive activation]
[Domain defense requires classification of all lair occupants as Host property]
[Accept classification to activate perimeter defense]
'The frame is offering to protect the building if I label every person inside it as my property,' Ossian watched the screen glow over the trainee's bandaged shoulder, 'the system wrote the mask-call I just made and then offered me the architecture to make it permanent.'
