Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 83 Ossian Loses in Public

  • Next Chapter

The prohibition hearing took the compliance test out of the loading bay and onto a broadcast stage. Two hundred seats plus six camera rigs turned a weapon inspection into a public sport.

Zoric sat in the front row with his six motes already orbiting. He narrated for a live feed, his Class growing fatter with every viewer who agreed he was the voice of reason.

"Today we find out whether mystery has limits," his voice carried through the broadcast rig before Tavet finished unfolding Caliper. "Or whether one hunter stands above the law that governs every other awakened citizen."

The whole crowd had come to see Ossian lose on camera. The country had decided overnight that the only thing scarier than a counterfeit was a real mask on an unclassifiable man.

Every mote in the room fed Zoric's Class, the camera rigs doubling as a certainty engine. Zoric grew brighter with each second the crowd agreed on what they were watching.

The hearing was the largest audience Ossian had ever stood in front of. It was also the largest meal Zoric had ever been served inside someone else's building.

'Two hundred seats, six cameras, and one guild on the table,' Ossian counted the exits out of habit.

Tavet stated the two remaining right-hand rules in the first thirty seconds. Those were the gripping claws that made escape harder, plus the close range the pull needed to fire.

[Three operational rules stated: right-hand configuration]

[Known Quantity condition met]

He locked both gauntlets on camera, the right stack freezing mid-pursuit while the left stayed sealed from the earlier test.

[Both weapon stacks locked: 60 seconds]

[Registered Host weapon fully restrained]

Ossian stood on the stage with Dreadweight locked on both fists. The camera rigs recorded the first fight of his life where the law had disarmed him before the creature entered.

The hearing's assessment hound was larger than the loading bay one, built to force a demonstration that the locked gauntlets could not provide. It paced the width of the stage twice, testing the air over the locked gauntlets.

Hollow Raven sat unregistered in the inventory, a mask Tavet had never seen. It could end the exchange in seconds, if Ossian was willing to be arrested for it.

[Reward calculation: unrevealed mask available]

[Warning: activation violates standing territorial decree]

'The system is offering me Hollow Raven the way it offered the Jackal in the flood.'

'A survival form that solves the problem in front of me,' Ossian felt the Fracture charge for wanting the face. 'Using it here turns a public defeat into a criminal charge that shuts the guild for good.'

Choosing meant either winning once or keeping the eight people whose names sat beside his on the filing.

The arithmetic took less than a breath, which was the problem with arithmetic.

He yielded on his own terms, lowering the locked gauntlets before the hound reached him. The public loss protected the court from the arrest that would have followed a win.

"I yield the demonstration," he said it into the camera rig so the feed could not edit it. "The Variable Profile remains incomplete, and no hunter should be classified on a test designed to make him fail."

Tavet acknowledged the yield as he acknowledged every locked parameter, flat and without triumph, the lock having done its work without a fight.

No hand in the room clapped for the lock, though plenty of phones recorded it.

The crowd read the yield as a confession within seconds. Two hundred people decided at once that a hunter who would not fight when disarmed must be hiding something worth disarming.

Zoric's narration turned the yield into proof before the word left the stage. His Class brightened on the agreement of an audience that had just chosen its villain.

The hound was led away unhurt, the only winner the hearing had produced. It had never needed to fight for an outcome the law had already written.

Bastien logged the yield time in the kitchen ledger, since the order had made fights caterer business.

'Tavet did not want to beat me, only to show the law could hold me,' Ossian felt the Fracture settle rather than spike. 'I gave Tavet the record by yielding, and the system charged me for wanting Hollow Raven.'

'I paid the charge by losing in public, which is the cheapest price on the menu.'

The prohibition's own expert witness took the stand after the yield, a profile assessor the Directorate had flown in to classify what Dreadweight actually was.

He ran the standard resonance battery on the locked gauntlets, then on Ossian's retained attributes. Then he tested the body built through a year of mastered masks.

"I cannot distinguish this hunter's mastered profile from an ordinary awakened one under standard testing," the assessor said it under oath. "The weapon is unclassifiable by the tools the Directorate uses. Which means the tools are incomplete rather than the hunter abnormal."

The testimony did not help Ossian, a country that feared masks hearing 'unclassifiable' and agreeing that unclassifiable things should be locked away.

The word trended within the hour, spelled correctly by people who had never seen the gauntlets.

The assessor had meant the word as a critique of his own tools. The broadcast printed it as a verdict on the hunter, the edit moving faster than any correction.

Ossian's retained attributes, the half of every mastered mask that had settled into his frame, had read as ordinary. Mastery was designed to look like the host rather than the monster.

'Every mask I mastered left its fingerprints inside me, and the test cannot see fingerprints,' Ossian watched the assessor frown at the readings.

The system's whole architecture was camouflage, and the assessor had just proved it worked. It worked well enough to make the guild look harmless in the one hearing where harmless read as suspicious.

Zoric's motes caught the assessor's word and built an hour of certainty out of it. His Class brightened with every viewer who decided the mystery hunter was the problem the hearing had been called to solve.

Public support for The Unmasked dropped eleven points by the evening feed, and three sponsors filed withdrawal notices before the hearing room cleared.

Paloma collected the withdrawal notices the way she collected every loss, pricing each departure against the catering licence that kept the guild legally alive.

"The sponsors are leaving a catering company," she filed the notices without expression. "Which is the only framing that lets us keep the shell while the country decides whether to fear us."

Seyra offered to challenge Zoric to a public performance on the guild feed, which Paloma declined in writing.

A woman in a dust-grey wrap coat arrived after the crowd cleared, carrying medical authority that belonged to no guild and no sponsor.

Cassia Morcant gave her name once to the hearing clerk. Then she asked the Directorate for permission to inspect every bound member of The Unmasked under independent medical authority.

Her dark hair was pulled loosely back with a streak of white at the left temple that had no business being there at her age.

She carried no bag, no badge, no escort beyond the clerk walking her in.

The lattice of silver scars across her forearms did not match any injury her own body had ever taken. They were the marks of a healer who carried her patients' wounds in her own skin.

She did not ask Ossian, she did not ask the guild, she asked the law. She had come to judge the masks, not the man who wore them.

'I spent a year building consent architecture so nobody could call my people victims. The most famous healer in the country just asked the law to check whether I am one,' Ossian watched Cassia wait for the Directorate's answer.

'She is not here to save anyone, which is the part that frightens me.'
