Master of Nine Stars
Chapter 611: I Heard (3)
Miss Mao Rabbit had done a very thoughtful job with the logistical supplies.
Gao Lingwei picked up another bottle of milk and walked back.
Rong Taotao often collapsed from exhaustion. Everyone already knew he wasn’t truly seriously injured or gravely ill; he simply fainted due to a complete loss of energy.
Now that he had woken up, it meant his body had “rebooted.” So, special meals for the sick were unnecessary. Any food that could replenish his energy would do.
She came back with the food and sat down assertively in the chair. Tearing open the bread’s wrapper, she said softly, “Whether in battle or in a competition, we often have a death-defying attitude, but this time was different. I hope that in the future, you’ll listen to orders, follow the captain’s command, and stick to the plan.”
Clearly, Gao Lingwei had been truly frightened this time.
This was, indeed, the closest Rong Taotao had ever come to death.
Because no one knew Xu Hunjiang would arrive. She was a reinforcement, but an unplanned one.
If Xu Fenghua hadn’t appeared that day, and that special Celestial Burial Snow Meteor had actually fallen, it was hard to say what would have become of Rong Taotao.
Both the Twelfth Squad and the Cyan Mountain Army could have used their signature Ice Power Like a Mountain to resist the Celestial Burial Snow Meteor, but as it turned out, that enormous and unusual Celestial Burial Snow Meteor couldn’t be stopped by ice pillars at all.
The Bailing Tree Maidens were also too far from Rong Taotao. At their movement speed, it would have been impossible for them to open their great tree-umbrellas over his head.
Every time she thought about it, a wave of lingering fear washed over Gao Lingwei…
‘In his state of complete exhaustion, would Huilian even have had the energy to protect Rong Taotao’s body?’
Rong Taotao took a bite of the bread Gao Lingwei offered him and immediately changed the subject, asking curiously, “Why am I at Hundred Corps Pass? Shouldn’t I be at Wan’an Pass?”
Gao Lingwei, however, reached out, took the bread, and used it to block Rong Taotao’s mouth.
“Mm.” Rong Taotao tore off a small piece of bread, leaned his head back, and said, “Tell me about the reinforcements. Did lots and lots of people come?”
“A lot did. A large contingent of the Snow Burning Army and the Snow Prison Warriors from Snow Prison Village all rushed to support us.” Gao Lingwei looked at Rong Taotao’s expectant expression and said softly, “But the battle was already over before they arrived. We had another reinforcement.”
“Huh?” Rong Taotao raised an eyebrow slightly, keenly picking up on her wording. He asked in confusion, “A single reinforcement? Saved all of us? Who? Who could be that powerful…”
As he spoke, Rong Taotao’s eyes suddenly widened, and his words trailed off.
Fu Tiance, Chen Bingxun… these Great God-level figures with illustrious reputations in the Snow Burning Army couldn’t turn the tide of the war by themselves. So, in this northern Snow Realm, who else could possibly reverse the course of a battle all on their own?
The list of candidates was very short…
Rong Taotao stared blankly at Gao Lingwei. “Her?”
Gao Lingwei nodded slightly, placed the bread on the bedside, and lowered her head to twist open the bottle cap.
Rong Taotao, however, suddenly shot out a hand and grabbed her wrist. “Xu Fenghua?”
The bread on the bedside fell to the floor, and the bottle of milk Gao Lingwei had just opened also splashed a few drops.
Gao Lingwei glanced at the hand gripping her wrist tightly and said softly, “Yes. Xu Hunjiang came. She was the one who terrified the entire Snow Realm Army, sending the Soul Beasts fleeing in panic and saving everyone.”
Rong Taotao stammered, “I… I… Where is she?”
“She left after resolving the crisis.” Gao Lingwei used her right hand to pry his fingers off her left wrist. Bending down, she placed the milk bottle on the floor before shaking her damp left hand.
From above her, Rong Taotao’s trembling voice came. “Then… how is she? Was she hurt? What does she look like now? Is she fat or thin? Is her hair long? Does she…”
Listening to Rong Taotao’s questions, Gao Lingwei felt a storm of complex emotions and, for a moment, didn’t even know how to respond.
A child,
having to ask someone else about his own mother’s current situation…
It seemed the world had been far too unkind to him.
