Mercenaries, I Will Be King
Chapter 1325 - 1126: Absolutely No Retreat! (Part 2)
The corpse of a government soldier was half-draped over the remaining sandbags, still clutching his AK-74 automatic rifle tightly.
The outer walls of the buildings on both sides of the street were riddled with dense bullet holes, like they were afflicted with some terrible skin disease.
The number three entrance was actually a two-meter wide road running east-west.
At the western end of the road, there was a stone wall about half a meter thick, with buildings four to five stories high on either side. The government forces used this location to establish defensive lines and positions because tanks approaching here would be taken out by government rocket soldiers from the buildings on either side.
So, this was a good spot for setting up a defensive position.
However, the "Victory Front" organized a suicide squad that broke through the sandbag positions at the street entrance and was currently attacking the stone wall. If the wall was breached, it would mean a gap in this last line of defense.
Upon arriving at the front line, Song Ping found the situation was worse than expected.
The stone wall was covered with black scorch marks and gaps left by explosions.
Behind the wall lay the bodies of seven or eight government and Wagner soldiers, blood soaking the ground, seeping into the rubble beneath them.
Clearly, these soldiers had died on the spot, without a chance to be rescued.
The dozen or so remaining defending soldiers were frantically firing out from cover at the gaps and the base of the wall, but their firepower was clearly suppressed. The enemy bullets rained down like a storm, striking the inside and outside of the stone wall, kicking up a spray of sparks and stone chips.
"Mr. Song! Colonel Yevgeny!"
A Siria officer, his face blackened by smoke, saw them as if seeing saviors, and shouted hoarsely, "There are too many of them! They're charging recklessly! We can't hold out much longer!"
Before he finished speaking, the sound of a frenzied engine roar and the rebels' fanatical shouts came from the front of the position!
"Allahu Akbar!"
"Damn it!"
Song Heping shivered at the sound.
Whenever someone shouts that slogan, it's either for victory or they're planning to martyr themselves.
He quickly looked out through an observation port.
He saw a dilapidated pickup truck, bolstered with thick steel plates, with the windshield welded shut with steel as well, billowing black smoke from the hood like a mad bull, charging madly towards the stone wall along the street!
It was indeed a suicide charge!
These extremist groups from the Middle East just love this style.
The "Victory Front" truly lived up to the name of an extremist organization.
Song Heping felt both disgusted and had his hackles raised.
If this thing crashes into the wall...
Even this half-meter-thick stone wall might not withstand such a fierce explosion.
The gap would quickly be breached.
Song Heping glanced at the pickup truck's bed, piled high with wooden crates secured by ropes, covered with tarps, but faintly revealing the bodies of mortars and bundled TNT explosives!
This was nothing short of a massive mobile bomb!
"Suicide vehicle! Shoot it! Stop it!"
Panic-stricken cries erupted on the front line!
The defending soldiers furiously poured bullets into the pickup.
The bullets from the AK-74 clanged against the welded steel plates and reinforced chassis, sparks flying, but could not effectively stop this iron monster's approach!
Panic was spreading.
Someone on the defensive line even started instinctively retreating, looking for an escape route.
"Don't panic! Hold your ground!"
Song Heping knew that if one person retreated at this moment, it would trigger a chain reaction.
He raised his gun, aiming at those few soldiers trying to back off.
"Anyone who retreats, I'll shoot!"
The few government soldiers saw the dark muzzle and immediately halted their retreat abruptly.
Song Heping swiftly raised his AK-74M assault rifle, the stock firmly against his shoulder, and through the PK-AS red dot sight, he instantly locked onto the target.
He was all too familiar with this type of suicide-modified pickup.
The 1515 Armed favored this kind of tactic.
Their "Martyr" units often resorted to such suicide attacks to break through when battles were at a stalemate.
Actually, it's a foolish method.
Success is bought with lives.
But this approach was indeed very effective.
After all, when faced with a group of mobile human bombs with no fear of death, it's human nature to instinctively feel fear.
Once fear sets in, retreat follows.
What the extremist leaders wanted was this kind of effect.
Song Heping did not shoot at the thick steel plates, but held his breath, calmly aiming at a narrow gap between the welded steel plate in front of the driver and the engine hood of the vehicle—there was the only possible place to observe the road conditions and the only angle where bullets might enter the cockpit!
Bang!
Bang!
Bang!
Three precise shots in a burst!
The bullet passed through the narrow gap, piercing into the driver's cabin.
"Explosion!"
Song Heping shouted loudly and quickly sprawled on the ground.
The crazily sprinting pickup suddenly swerved, as if drunkenly, smashing into the load-bearing wall of a crumbling three-story building on the left side of the street!
Boom!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A thunderous explosion erupted!
Hundreds of kilograms of explosives and shells stacked in the cargo bed were instantly detonated!
A huge fireball soared into the sky, engulfing the entire pickup and everything nearby! The intense shockwave felt like an invisible giant hammer, striking the stone wall and everyone's chest, nearly suffocating them.
The ground floor of the three-story building was completely destroyed, the upper structure emitting a teeth-jarring groan, and a few seconds later, the walls and structure collapsed with a roar, sending a thick cloud of dust over the whole neighborhood like fog.
After the aftermath of the explosion, the people's ears were still ringing and their hearts and lungs ached from the shock.
Still, this time, the deadly suicide attack was thwarted.
But, before anyone could catch their breath, the Wagner sniper stationed at the high point screamed another warning: "Tank! One o'clock! T-72! About five hundred meters! It's aiming here!!"
Song Heping's heart tightened suddenly as he quickly glanced into the distance.
Better off not seeing it; seeing it made his hair stand on end.
At the end of the street loomed a massive T-72 main battle tank, its turret slowly rotating, and the fearsome 125mm smoothbore barrel pointing straight at the already badly damaged stone wall!
"Leave the stone wall! Everyone! Scatter! Find cover! Quick!"
Song Heping shouted frantically, and shoved the nearby, still dazed, government army soldier.
Just as everyone scrambled and crawled to escape the stone wall cover—
Boom!!!
A scorching flare burst from the tank's muzzle!
The shell struck the center of the stone wall at a speed too fast for the eye to catch!
Stones and debris shot out in all directions like a torrential rain!
The thick stone wall was blown open with a massive gap!
Boom!!!
The second shot followed closely! Accurately hitting the relatively intact section next to the gap!
More stones tumbled down!
Boom!!!
The third shot!
The tank made minor adjustments, with the shell drilling directly into the base of the stone wall!
After the intense explosion, the core barrier that had held for so long finally let out an overwhelmed groan and collapsed completely, turning into a heap of large rubble, still able to obstruct direct vehicle passage but unable to provide effective cover for infantry anymore.
"Allahu Akbar!"
The religious slogan, familiar yet detested by Song Heping, rang out once more.
Behind the tank, a shadowy mass of "Victory Front" infantry emerged, emitting excited howls and beginning to advance under the tank's cover!
"Damn it! Can't hold it! Lao Song, retreat! Let them in, and we'll withdraw into the buildings for room-to-room fighting!"
Chef finished off a magazine, ducked back to reload while shouting at Song Heping, the PKP machine gun barrel already scorching hot.
Song Heping's eyes swiftly scanned the surrounding environment.
The command post was less than five hundred meters behind them; it was already the last viable defensive line here.
If abandoned, the rebel infantry and this tank could storm in, directly threatening or even besieging the command post.
If the command post was seized or communication disrupted, the entire defense system in Halaib would instantly crumble!
The soldiers would lose unified command and coordination, becoming scattered warriors, easily divided and annihilated by the enemy.
Absolutely no retreat!
His gaze abruptly fixed on the already half-collapsed building from the previous suicide truck explosion, further destabilized by the tank's shelling, and another heavily damaged four-story building opposite it.
An extremely bold, even crazy idea instantly formed in his mind.
