Mercenary’s War

Chapter 2709 A Name Must Be Left Behind

  • Next Chapter

In the moment of hanging up the phone, Gao Yang was quite angry.

Yarebin had passed away, and the people of the Black Demon didn’t come to take care of his affairs, not even to attend his funeral. How could this not make Gao Yang angry?

But the feeling of anger dissipated quickly like steam from boiling water.

Yarebin was dead, but his influence hadn’t diminished one bit. The rules he set wouldn’t become void with his departure. The Black Demon refusing to handle his affairs, refusing to attend his funeral, perhaps was the best way to commemorate him.

Yarebin wasn’t a good person.

Yarebin wasn’t a bad person either.

In his life, Yarebin was a great and loyal warrior for the Soviet Union, but a cold-blooded and terrifying devil to his enemies.

Other than the Soviet Union, no one could pronounce a final judgment on Yarebin’s extraordinary life.

But the Soviet Union no longer existed, it disappeared, so no one in this world could conclude Yarebin’s life. Regardless of who they are, no one had the qualifications, including the Black Demon, and including Gao Yang.

Gao Yang walked back to Yarebin’s bedside. He stared at Yarebin’s face, gazing for a long, long time.

Gao Yang reached out, gently pulled the blanket up a little, then looked at Yarebin’s face and softly said, "Teacher, do you remember? I said I would bury you in the New Saintess Cemetery."

Gently sitting down, Gao Yang sat by the bed, back facing Yarebin, and slowly said, "I’m pondering whether to bury you in Sochi or in the New Saintess Cemetery. Sochi is your home, and the New Saintess Cemetery is where the Black Demon rests in peace. After thinking about it, I feel you might prefer to rest at the New Saintess Cemetery. That’s where your comrades are. Sochi once was your home, but the Black Demon was your everything."

Letting out a long sigh, Gao Yang rubbed his eyes and said in a low voice, "You surely want to rest at the New Saintess Cemetery. I said that no matter what, I’d find a way to bury you there. Teacher, you left so suddenly; I wasn’t prepared. I thought you’d live in Sochi for a few more years. Although I knew this day would come eventually, I really didn’t expect it so soon. You felt you no longer needed to look after me, and so simply let go and left, leaving me so passive, teacher. You were really a bit too hasty. I also wanted to bring my children to visit you, and I don’t even know if the King of the Black Devils likes children, let alone knows how to care for them."

Shaking his head, Gao Yang said very troubled, "Sneaking you into the New Saintess Cemetery isn’t an issue, but it’s unacceptable to me in this way. Perhaps you feel a nameless stone marker sufficiently sums up your life, but teacher, this can’t be!"

After a moment of silence, Gao Yang said with a face full of trouble, "Think about it. After I grow old and can’t visit you anymore, my children can go visit you, burn some incense for you or something. Oh, I forgot, you guys like flowers, not incense offerings. It doesn’t matter; whatever you like, I’ll send it to you. But you know, all those bare stone markers without a name, I can remember where you are, but what about when the kids can’t find you?"

Shaking his head continuously, Gao Yang said in a low voice, "It can’t be like this. We can’t leave without a name. In the past, you all had unnamed tombstones because the Soviet Union was still around, and secrecy was crucial. But now the Soviet Union is gone; who cares about the Black Demon anymore? What’s to keep secret? You were nameless in life, but does that mean you should leave no name in death? No, no, I must write your legacy, and what’s more, I will bury every member of the Black Demon into the New Saintess Cemetery. There are still ten buried in Ukraine. I’ll slowly move them all to the New Saintess Cemetery. You will have companions, whether underground or in heaven, surely you won’t be lonely, right?"

With a long sigh, Gao Yang patted Yarebin’s hand in reverse and still did not turn back, continuing like talking to himself, "The Black Demon is omnipotent. Even if I can’t accomplish everything, such small matters can’t trip me up. Rest easy."

Bravely speaking to Yarebin, Gao Yang’s face quickly turned somber again. Then he said troubled, "But it’s not easy. Finding a spot to bury you secretly is one thing, but if I set up a marker, I’m afraid someone might disturb you. Russia has always harbored a fear of the Black Demon. After all, the symbolism is too deep for your kind. I can’t ask Baskov, if your matter caused him trouble, I’m not worried about affecting him, I’m worried you’d scold me. Sacrificing a highly useful tool for such trivial funeral matters, you’d surely scold me to death."

Very troubled, Gao Yang scratched his head and said worriedly, "But not asking Baskov makes it difficult. Who do I ask for this matter? The key is I don’t even know who to ask! Your rules were just too strict; Glewatov and the others didn’t dare put down their tasks to see you off. Not to criticize, but teacher, your influence was enormous. Forget it, I shouldn’t make it difficult for them, forcing the Black Demon to break the taboo you left behind, what would that be?"

Gao Yang was genuinely troubled, but he soon stood up, turned around, and said to Yarebin with determination, "But I can handle this matter. Rest assured. If I can’t handle such a minor issue, it would be a waste of everything you taught me. Await my good news, teacher."

Slowly walking out of Yarebin’s room, Gao Yang returned to his own room. He picked up the phone, thought for a long time, and made his first call to Justin.

"Buddy, it’s Ram."

"Hey, you’re calling me late at night again. Go on, what troubles have you run into this time? Hopefully, it’s not you asking to help hook up your brother with a girl."

"My teacher is gone."

"Hmm?"

"My teacher, Yarebin, the King of the Black Devils, he just passed away."

"Uh, I’m sorry, my condolences."

Gao Yang said solemnly, "I want to bury my teacher in the New Saintess Cemetery, but this isn’t something you just sneakily accomplish. I want him openly and honorably buried there, and I want to write his legacy on his tombstone and carve the Soviet flag on it. I want him to be buried under the Soviet flag. Buddy, I don’t know how I can do this, but I hope you can help me."

Justin said extremely surprised, "Buddy, are you crazy! Do you know what this implies? Burying him in the New Saintess Cemetery is straightforward, but doing all that... Are you really crazy?"

Gao Yang said calmly, "I’m not crazy. I’m very calm. I can’t let him leave so plainly. I have to let people know who is resting in his grave. The Soviet Union should have covered him with its flag. Since the Soviet Union is gone, let me fulfill that."
