Lana sinking in the black water of Santa Monica Bay at night, champagne bottles weighing down her coat. On the shore, the green light of her manor pulses.

Ch13: Starry Starry Night

Eppie, knee-deep in the surf at sunset, soaked to the waist by the waves, singing Vincent as a funeral for Lana. Amber and pink beach, the pier’s shadow on the sand. Pacific Park’s Ferris wheel and coaster above. Armand grips the railing in paint-stained overalls, a second before he jumps.

CH 28: Black Cat

Eppie in Cat Costume; she is the first cat in space!

Can do Eppie and friends, or Eppie in the shelter, surrounded by cats.

Ch30: Strange Fruit

The cat shelter at night. Lim, huge and broken, confesses to Eppie with cats all around them. Bao will have to draw like… six cats.

Ch35: Our House

Hotel Basque at Thanksgiving: round, worn tables, low ceilings, warm lamplight. Zara on guitar. Paco plays guitar while Eppie sings in public for the first time and the room turns toward her.

Ch36: Stand By Me

The Reedley church cloister. Eppie and Mio on stone benches under a tree of overripe navel oranges, Mio in her Sunday floral blouse, about to hand over the cassette tape. (She’s visibly pregnant)

Ch41: Both Sides Now

Gala morning. Eppie alone on the X of the empty Playhouse stage, looking out at dark seats. In spot light.

Ch42: Heroes

Antigone. The schoolgirl under the light in her ruined prep uniform: headband gone, blouse open and untucked, skirt creased. Spine still straight. “Look at me.” Lighting forms a jail cell.

Ch44: Where Did You Sleep Last Night?

Eppie on the Whitman stage singing In the Pines, while William sits in the best seat, being “eaten alive” by it. Either POV of Eppie on stage, or POV from Zara, Eppie beside her, William below, metaphorical spot light on him.

Ch53: the pot throw

December night at Vaughan’s manor, seen from above by Aziz on the third floor. Three half-round balconies. On the far one, Grein stands lit from behind by amber light, facing Val, still as a statue. On the near one, Eppie spins like a hammer thrower; the terracotta Christmas-tree pot arcs through the cold, shedding soil, rainwater and pine. Her Givenchy is shredding. Paint the pot in flight.

Ch53: Kiss With a Fist

The corridor afterwards. Val, in a scarlet McQueen dress with terracotta shards on it and mascara running, is on her butt, on the floor, looking stunned. Eppie is rigid with horror: Givenchy torn from hip to hem, palms bleeding, soil in her hair. Behind them, John Singer Sargent’s Madame X looks down with disapproval. Aziz’s flash is the only light. An assault caught on camera.

Ch56: Sukiyaki

Christmas Eve in a steam-heated service tunnel under Central Park. Eppie sings Ue o Muite Arukō to Kiritani among homeless men, with sleeping cats stirring in the dark. Bao will have to draw six cats.

Ch69: Smile

The 50th Grammys red carpet. Eppie in Vittoria Conti’s burnt-orange Miu Miu, drawing in the camera flashes and throwing them back. Zara beside her, looking terrified. Red Carpet scene.

Ch77: Father and Son

The Met’s Contemporary Wing in soft ambient light. Eppie holds Val, who finally breaks at “It’s not your fault, Val.” The salvation comes, finally.

Ch78: The Long and Winding Road

The Kiritani exhibition. Giant picture of Cats in ball point. Beneath it, Eppie hugs Kiritani.

Ch84: Uprising

Val walks out of the Chen compound, torn and bloodied, cradling Garfield. Show the cat and her resolve, bleeding hands and some scratches.

Ch90: The Killing Moon

Titus at the Whitman. Val as Lavinia turns from her stage father, red thread spilling from her sleeves, and points her stumps into the audience, straight at William.

Ch90: the roof

Rain on the LAPA roof, no guardrail. The sign cycles gold, red and violet; Eppie, in theatre blacks, flickers against the old antenna. William eats a terracotta flower trough; the gun goes flying.
