Chapter 50: The Skybridge Intercept
The morning sun poured through the glass walls of the skybridge. Dust motes drifted in the cold air between them.
Nathan Cole stood near the window with his phone in his hand, waiting, the way he probably waited for opposing counsel to read a settlement offer.
Lucas did not panic. Somatic Composure kept his breathing even. He let the silence run.
"You send that email," Lucas said. His voice was flat and calm. "And Camilla goes down. But she does not go down alone."
"She goes down for receiving stolen corporate funds," Cole replied smoothly. "She becomes a federal target. I become a whistle-blower who noticed a banking anomaly."
"She received a zoning contract," Lucas corrected him. "If the SEC freezes her company at noon, they freeze the contract that caused the transfer. They read the fine print. They see page forty-seven."
Lucas took a slow step forward on the carpet.
"They see an environmental liability clause," Lucas said. "They look for the soil assessment that triggered it. They find Harlan Environmental."
Cole stopped smiling.
"They call Delaware," Lucas went on. "They look at Pell and Garrity. They demand the records for the registered agent. They find Brennan Soil and Water. They find Pier Nine. They find a two-year paper trail of municipal fraud."
Cole swallowed hard. His grip on the smartphone tightened.
"You think you are going to be sitting on a beach in a non-extradition country," Lucas said. "But you are standing in a dead zone on a glass bridge in the middle of the city. If that email sends at noon, they do not start their investigation next week. They start it today. Your passport gets flagged by three o’clock. You will not even make it through terminal security."
Cole looked down at the phone, and for the first time that morning he seemed to be doing arithmetic he did not like.
"Turn off the jammer," Cole whispered.
"Cancel the email first," Lucas said.
"I need a cellular signal to cancel it."
Lucas held his gaze. He mentally deactivated the Localized Signal Jamming skill.
The faint electronic hum in his inner ear vanished.
Cole looked down at his screen. The empty signal indicator flickered. Three solid bars of cellular service appeared.
The lawyer opened his secure mail application. He navigated to his scheduled outbox. His thumb hovered over the delete icon. He looked up at Lucas once more.
"Do it," Lucas commanded.
Cole tapped the screen.
He deleted the scheduled message. He cleared the outbox. He navigated to his settings and deleted the application’s draft cache.
Lucas did not take the lawyer’s word for it. He stepped closer and looked directly at the bright screen. He let Forensic Insight open.
[Forensic Insight Activated.]
[Digital Analysis: Scheduled transmission cancelled on the server. No copies remain in the outbox or drafts.]
Lucas let out a slow breath.
Cole did not waste another second. He backed out of the mail application and opened his dialer. He hit his recent calls list. He tapped the Wilmington area code to reach his Delaware fixer.
Lucas stepped in.
He did not throw a punch. He was younger, and he had spent the week carrying archive boxes up and down stairwells. Cole had spent thirty years behind a desk.
Lucas grabbed Cole’s wrist with his left hand. He clamped his right hand over the phone.
Cole let out a sharp gasp of surprise. He tried to yank his arm back. Lucas held firm. The older man pulled harder, planting his expensive leather shoes on the carpet. Lucas twisted his grip and wrenched the phone out of Cole’s fingers.
Cole shoved Lucas in the chest with his free hand. The push lacked real force. Lucas took a half step back to absorb the impact and dropped the phone into his own jacket pocket.
"Give that back," Cole demanded. He was breathing hard.
"The call is not happening, Nathan," Lucas said.
"You promised me an exit," Cole snapped.
"I lied," Lucas said.
The heavy fire doors at the far end of the skybridge opened.
Two broad-shouldered men in dark suits stepped onto the carpet. Behind them came Victoria’s head of security, a gray-haired man in a gray suit. None of them hurried.
Lucas had coordinated the timing with Victoria before he ever walked up to the fourth floor. He had told her to wait in her suite. He had told her to send security to the skybridge at exactly ten-forty. They were two minutes early.
Cole looked at the security team, then back at Lucas.
"She knew," he said. "The whole time you were bargaining with me, she knew."
Lucas said nothing.
"Ms. Sterling would like to see you downstairs, Mr. Cole," the security chief said.
He stopped a polite distance away. The two guards stepped forward and flanked Cole on either side. Cole straightened his jacket and smoothed his tie. He did not argue.
"She is going to build a cage for you too, Lucas," Cole said softly. He did not look angry anymore. He looked tired. "She does not share power."
"I will take my chances," Lucas replied.
The security chief gestured toward the door. Cole turned and walked off the skybridge. The guards followed him into the stairwell. The heavy fire door clicked shut, cutting off the sound of their footsteps.
Lucas stood alone on the glass bridge.
The sun was warm on his shoulders. His hands had started to shake a little, now that there was nothing left to hold.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his own cracked smartphone. He checked his secure messaging app.
He expected a confirmation text from Morgan Hale. He expected her to say she had the physical Delaware documents in her hands and was driving back to the city.
He opened the new message.
I am at the King Street hold center. The clerk says the Northshore package is not here. It was signed out twenty minutes ago by someone else.
Lucas read it twice. Cole’s phone was in his pocket. Cole was in a stairwell with three guards. Whoever had walked into King Street with that paper had not needed Cole to send them.
