Chapter 52: Collusion Trap

  • Next Chapter

Lucas stared at the cracked screen of his smartphone.

The message from Morgan sat in the encrypted chat. Cole had not just built a shell company to frame his boss. He had built it to take down two people.

"What is it?" Victoria asked.

She stood a few feet away, her dark eyes tracking the sudden shift in his posture. She had just spent the last twenty minutes surviving the shock of her own lawyer’s betrayal. She could read the tension locking Lucas’s shoulders.

"Morgan has the wet-ink original from Delaware," Lucas said. He did not look up from the screen. "Your signature is on the ownership line. But you are not the only one on the document."

Victoria frowned. "Who else?"

"The listed financial guarantor for Northshore Remediation Group," Lucas said, finally meeting her gaze. "It is Camilla Verman."

Victoria went perfectly still.

For a moment she didn’t seem to follow. Then she did. Her jaw tightened, and the color left her face.

"A joint shell company," Victoria whispered.

"He tied you together," Lucas said. "He knew that if he just framed you, you might find a way to fight it with your legal team. So he engineered a nuclear option. A shadow corporation owned by Vertex Management and funded by Verman Development."

Victoria turned away and walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. She placed her hand flat against the cold glass.

"Antitrust," Victoria murmured, her voice hollow with realization. "Collusion. Market manipulation. If the SEC or the Department of Justice found a shell company connecting us, they would not see a rogue lawyer committing fraud. They would see a cartel."

Lucas understood the math. "They would assume you and Camilla have been secretly working together for years. Faking environmental reports to tank property values, pushing out competitors, and carving up the city’s real estate market between the two of you."

"RICO," Victoria said, turning back to him. Her voice had gone flat and very calm. "They would hit us with the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. The federal government would seize every building, every account, and every asset either of us has ever touched. We would both spend the rest of our lives in federal prison."

Cole had never meant to just run. His exit plan was to make sure everyone went down with him. If Victoria ever caught him, he would have pointed to Northshore and promised to pull the pin, taking both empires down with him.

Lucas tapped the call icon on his phone. Morgan answered immediately. The loud hum of highway tires echoed over the speaker.

"Are you looking at the document right now?" Lucas asked.

"It is in the passenger seat," Morgan said. "I am on the interstate. Lucas, Camilla’s signature was done the same way as Victoria’s. It is lifted. The edges are barely visible, but they are there."

"He would have had her signature from the Pier Nine bid two years ago," Lucas said. "He lifted them both to build the ultimate dead-man’s switch."

"I am bringing it straight to Vertex," Morgan said. "I should be in your underground garage in a little over an hour."

"Do not stop for anything," Lucas instructed. He ended the call.

He looked at Victoria. She was already moving toward her mahogany desk. Whatever she had felt a few minutes ago, she had put it away. She was working now.

"We have Cole in custody," Victoria said, picking up her desk phone. "We have the physical paper en route. But if Cole built this trap, he might have planted digital breadcrumbs connecting Camilla to Northshore in her own servers. We need to know what he hid in her house."

"I will call her," Lucas said.

"Do more than call her," Victoria commanded. "Tell her to get in a car and come to this building immediately. Use the secure executive garage. No press, no handlers. Just her."

Lucas did not argue. He stepped away from the desk and dialed Camilla’s private number.

She answered on the second ring.

"I was starting to think you had forgotten my number," Camilla murmured. Her voice was warm and a little possessive. "Tell me your Saturday is free."

"It isn’t, Camilla," Lucas said. His voice was dead serious. "I need you to leave your office right now. Get in your private car and drive to Vertex Management."

The warmth evaporated from the line instantly.

"I am not setting foot in her building," Camilla said. Her tone was sharp. "Victoria and I have been fighting over this city for years. If anyone sees me walk into her lobby, the financial press will call it a merger or a settlement by Monday."

"You are not going to the lobby," Lucas said. "You are pulling into the secure underground garage. And you are coming because Nathan Cole did not just frame Victoria. He framed you."

Silence stretched over the phone.

"Explain," Camilla demanded softly.

"The Delaware shell company that generates the fake environmental reports," Lucas said, keeping his voice low. "Victoria’s forged signature is on the ownership line. Your forged signature is on the guarantor line. He built a paper trail proving that you and Victoria are running an illegal real estate cartel."

He heard Camilla’s breath hitch. She had spent twenty years in commercial real estate. She knew what an antitrust case could do the second he described it.

"If that document goes public," Camilla whispered, "they seize everything I own."

"Morgan Hale has the physical original," Lucas said. "She is bringing it here. We have Cole locked in a conference room downstairs. We need you in the room when we dismantle the rest of his network. Get in the car."

"I am leaving now," Camilla said.

The line clicked dead.

Lucas lowered his phone. He looked at Victoria.

"She is on her way," Lucas said.

"Good," Victoria said. She poured herself a glass of water from the wet bar and took a measured sip. "When she arrives, I will handle the corporate logistics. You manage her temper. If we are going to take this apart, I can’t have the two of us fighting in my office."

Before Lucas could respond, his phone vibrated in his hand.

It was an encrypted message from Morgan. It contained a single, high-resolution photograph of the Northshore guarantor page she had snapped from her passenger seat.

Lucas opened the image.

He activated Forensic Insight.

[Forensic Insight Activated.]

[Visual spectrum shifted. Document analysis overlay rendered.]

The blue and gray filters settled over his vision, stripping away the surface of the digital photograph to reveal the mechanical layers beneath.

He stared at the page. Morgan was right. Camilla’s signature on the guarantor line had been lifted. He could see the faint rectangular border where the image had been pasted into the file before it was printed.

Then his eyes dropped to the bottom of the page, and his stomach turned over.

Every legal corporate filing required a certified notary public to verify the identity of the signatory. On a fraudulent document, a smart forger would use a fake notary stamp, or lift a real one just like the signature.

Lucas zoomed in on the circular black stamp pressed over the guarantor line.

The Forensic Insight overlay flared bright red.

[Document Anomaly Detected.]

[The notary seal is not a digital artifact. It was stamped in wet ink after the page was printed.]

[The handwritten date and initials beside the seal match the hand that completed the notarial certificate.]

Cole had not faked the notary seal. The certificate was dated eighteen days ago, the same day Northshore was formed. Someone had stood over this forged page with a real stamp and made it legally binding in the state of Delaware.

Lucas zoomed in closer, reading the tiny, curved text inside the official black circle of the notary commission.

State of Delaware Notary Public.

Commission Expires: 2028.

Mads Ellstrom.

Lucas read the name twice.

Mads.

Camilla’s assistant. The man on her intercom. The man who sat outside her office every day and handled the paperwork that went in and out of it.

He was also a commissioned notary. And eighteen days ago, he had notarized a forged document that tied his own boss to a criminal scheme.

Nathan Cole had not executed this two-year fraud operation alone. He had an inside man planted deep in Camilla Verman’s inner circle.

Lucas looked up from his phone. Victoria was watching him, her dark eyes narrowing at his face.

"Lucas," Victoria said sharply. "What is it?"

"Cole is not the only one going to prison today," Lucas said quietly. He turned his phone around and showed the screen to the founder of Vertex Management. "He has an accomplice. And he works outside Camilla’s office door."
