Milf Acquisition System

Chapter 60: Disclosure Window

  • Next Chapter

Lucas stood in the empty corridor of the legal floor and held the phone to his ear.

He looked at the yellow tape sealing Cole’s office. He thought about the lie that would buy him twenty-four hours, the one that cast the blame on an unnamed courier or a junior associate passing down the hall.

He didn’t use it.

"I did it," Lucas said quietly.

Morgan didn’t gasp. The line stayed quiet, the background hum of the precinct steady behind her.

"I took the folder into the holding room," Lucas continued. His voice was level. He did not try to make it sound better than it was. "I read the liability clause on page forty-seven. I knew Cole was positioned to get his hands on the expansion penalty the minute it moved. So I changed the routing numbers. The money went into one of Camilla’s dormant accounts instead of where Cole expected it."

"You altered a signed contract and moved your employer’s money into a competitor’s account," Morgan said. It wasn’t an accusation. She was establishing the facts.

"I protected the money by putting it where Cole couldn’t touch it," Lucas said. "I didn’t know Mads had access to the dormant account. I didn’t know he was watching it."

"You parked that kind of money in an account you knew nothing about."

"I took the only option I had that morning. Cole was ten minutes from it."

He listened to the silence. Morgan was an auditor. She didn’t judge the morality of a transaction; she judged its structure. But she was also the woman who had sat across from him in a diner and looked at a forged signature because he asked her to.

"I am writing the report, Lucas," Morgan said finally.

"I know."

"I will not lie for you," she said. "I will not leave out the reprint. I will not leave out the shared login, and I will not leave out the badge logs placing you ten feet from the printer. The prosecutor will read exactly what the record shows."

"I wouldn’t ask you to change it."

"I submit my findings to the state prosecutor tomorrow at nine in the morning," Morgan said. "At nine-oh-one, they are going to issue a subpoena for your communications, and they are going to ask Victoria Sterling why her attaché rerouted her own corporate penalty."

"I’ll tell her."

"You tell both of them," Morgan corrected him. "If the prosecutor thinks Camilla was in on it, she goes down with you. She needs to know exactly what is coming."

Morgan paused. When she spoke again, her tone was strictly professional, stripped of the tentative camaraderie they had built in the archives.

"Get a lawyer, Lucas. Do not say a word to the police without one."

She ended the call.

Lucas lowered the phone.

[High-Stakes Acquisition Quest Generated!]

[Objective: Disclose the alteration of page 47 to Camilla Verman and Victoria Sterling before Morgan Hale submits her report.]

[Reward: 800 AP.]

[Failure Penalty: Total loss of trust from both targets. They will treat the Host as a threat.]

He slipped the phone back into his pocket.

Tomorrow at nine.

Less than a day to tell two of the most powerful women in the city that the money everyone was chasing had landed where it did because of him.

He turned around.

Victoria Sterling was standing at the end of the corridor near the executive stairwell.

She had come down the stairs quietly. He didn’t know how much she had heard. From the set of her shoulders, it was enough.

"Who was that?" Victoria asked. Her voice carried clearly down the empty hall.

"Morgan," Lucas said, walking toward her.

"Did she find something in Mads’s server logs?"

"She found a print queue record," Lucas said. "Someone used a shared courier login on this floor to reprint page forty-seven on the morning of the signing."

Victoria’s dark eyes locked onto his.

"And?" she prompted.

"And she is cross-referencing the badge access logs to see who was on this floor at that exact time," Lucas said.

Victoria watched his face. She had spent her whole career reading what people didn’t say.

He wasn’t offering her a suspect.

"You were on this floor," Victoria said quietly.

"Yes."

She didn’t ask if he did it. She waited.

Lucas stopped a few feet away from her. Six hours ago they had been in her bed. It felt a lot longer.

"I will tell you everything tonight," Lucas said.

Victoria frowned. "Tonight."

"After I see Camilla," Lucas said. He kept his voice steady. He did not apologize for the schedule. "She is expecting me at two. She is owed the first conversation about this."

Victoria’s jaw tightened.

She didn’t like waiting. She liked waiting in line behind Camilla Verman even less.

"She’s owed," Victoria repeated.

"Her assistant stole the money," Lucas said. "Her name is on the dormant account. She is carrying the heaviest liability right now. I need to clear her side of the board before I sit down with you."

Victoria studied him. He wasn’t backing down, and he wasn’t making excuses. She had liked that about him last night. She liked it a lot less now.

"Fine," Victoria said. Her tone was pure ice. "You talk to Camilla. But when you come to my apartment tonight, you bring the whole truth, Lucas. No curated timelines. No strategic omissions. I want every single detail."

"You will have it," Lucas promised.

She turned and walked back toward the stairwell.

"I am driving you to her building," Victoria said over her shoulder. "My board call starts in ten minutes. We leave at one-thirty."

The ride to Camilla’s building was mostly silent.

Victoria drove the way she had that morning, fast and without wasted movement. She didn’t turn on the radio.

Lucas sat in the passenger seat and watched the city roll by.

He didn’t try to fill the quiet. There was nothing to say that wouldn’t sound like a preemptive defense. Victoria pulled up to the curb outside Verman Development a few minutes before two.

She put the car in park but left the engine running.

She didn’t look at him immediately. She kept her hands on the steering wheel.

"You are walking into a very volatile room," Victoria said quietly.

"I know."

"Camilla does not compartmentalize well when she feels cornered," Victoria continued. She finally turned her head to look at him. "If she realizes you withheld information that affects her personal liability, she will not care why you did it. She will only care that you kept her blind."

"I am aware of how she operates."

Victoria reached across the center console. She didn’t grab his lapel or pull him in for a kiss. She rested her hand flat against his chest, right over his heart.

"Don’t let her take you apart," Victoria said. "I still need you in one piece tonight."

"I will see you tonight, Victoria."

He stepped out onto the sidewalk. The wind off the street was cold. He watched the black sedan pull back into traffic.

He turned and walked through the heavy glass doors of Verman Development.

The building felt different. People spoke quietly and walked fast. The receptionist didn’t smile as he passed. Security guards stood at the elevator banks, their eyes scanning every employee who walked through the lobby.

Lucas took the private elevator straight to Camilla’s office.

He stepped out and walked down the corridor. Mads Ellstrom’s desk was empty. The computer monitor was dark, the chair pushed neatly under the polished wood.

Lucas stopped in front of the heavy glass doors to Camilla’s office. He took a slow breath, letting Somatic Composure settle his pulse. He pushed the doors open.

Camilla Verman stood by the window, looking out over the city.

She wore a dark suit. A cup of coffee sat untouched on her desk next to a stack of legal briefs.

She didn’t turn around when the door clicked shut.

"You are on time," Camilla said. Her voice was perfectly flat.

"I said I would be," Lucas replied.

She finally turned. The shadows under her green eyes were darker than yesterday. She looked exhausted, and completely focused.

"The detectives called me an hour ago," Camilla said. She didn’t move from the window. "They have Mads in an interrogation room in Dover. He is talking fast."

"I heard."

"He told them he didn’t change the routing numbers on the zoning contract," Camilla said slowly. "He told them he only watched the account. He said someone else made the alteration."

Lucas held his ground. He didn’t interrupt her.

"The detectives asked me a very specific question," Camilla continued. She took a slow step toward the center of the room. "They asked who had access to the dormant account the money landed in."

She stopped a few feet away from him.

"I told them Mads opened it for me years ago," Camilla said. "I told them he had the authorization codes. But then they asked who else knew the account existed."

Camilla looked at him and didn’t blink.

"I told them nobody else knew," Camilla whispered.

Lucas didn’t look away.

"But that isn’t true, is it, Lucas?" Camilla asked quietly. "You knew."
