Chapter 263: Off Rotation
Jessica came off the night rotation at dawn and did not go straight to her room.
Liam found her in the kitchen, still in blacks, hair damp at the temples, pouring water like she was angry at the glass.
The house was quiet in the way it only managed in the first hour after the night shiftno Jack on the bag yet, Rowena’s tablet dark on the sideboard, the courtyard lamps still on against a sky that had only begun to pale.
Jessica drank half the glass without stopping, set it down hard enough to click, and only then seemed to notice he was there.
"You’re up early," she said. Not friendly. Not cold. The middle register she used when she had not decided whether a conversation was work.
"So are you."
"Shift ended. Hydration isn’t optional." She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and finally looked at him fully. The hardness that used to define her had never fully left; it had only learned when to stand down.
After the kidnapping, after he had pulled her out of that mess, something in her posture had changed when he was in the room not soft, not owed, just present. "You were at the yard before the sun. Again. The house notices when the centre lives somewhere else."
"The yard had paper teeth. They’re handled."
"Good." A beat. She leaned her hip against the counter. The blacks fit her like kit: practical, tight enough at the thigh and hip that the shape under them was not a secret.
"I’m not asking for a report. I’m saying the perimeter feels it when your head is on a route. People get sloppy when they think no one’s watching the watchers."
He stepped closer. She did not step back. The kitchen island sat between them like a truce that had already thinned.
Jessica’s eyes moved over his face, then away, then back as if checking a threat assessment she already knew the answer to.
"You’re off rotation until tonight," Liam said.
"That’s the schedule."
"Use it."
She almost laughed a short sound, more air than humour. "Is that an order?"
"It’s an invitation. Your room or mine. Door closed. No audience."
Jessica held still for a long second. The fridge hummed. Somewhere deep in the house a pipe ticked.
Then she put the glass in the sink, wiped her hands on a cloth, and walked past him toward the stairs. At the bottom step she looked back once, eyes dark, mouth set.
"Yours," she said. "Mine smells like duty kit."
His room was dim against the morning. The glass wall held a muted version of the grounds; the bed was still made from a night he had barely used.
Jessica locked the door herself, the click soft and final, and when she kissed him it was not soft it was the release of a woman who had stood watch for eight hours and still had heat left.
Her mouth was cool from the water and then not. Liam backed her to the bed, fingers already working the zip of the blacks, and pulled the top open to find the body under the uniform: strong shoulders, high breasts in a plain sports bra, the faint scar on her ribs she never explained and he never asked about.
He mouthed her throat, her collarbone, the tight line of her stomach while she dragged his shirt off and cursed under her breath when his fingers slid under the waistband of the trousers and between her legs. She was already wet hot against his knuckles, impatient.
"Don’t draw it out," she said against his ear. "I hate waiting. I waited all shift."
He did not draw it out.
He got her out of the rest of the kit boots, trousers, the practical underwear that had no business being as affecting as it was and spread her on the sheets.
She watched him strip with the same assessing gaze she used on a perimeter gap, then reached for his cock when he came down over her and stroked him once, firm, like she was confirming a weapon.
He pushed her hand away, hooked her thigh high, and pushed into her in one deep stroke that made her arch and grip his shoulders hard enough to leave crescents.
She was tight, hot, impatient. He fucked her hard from the start no office negotiation, no calendar rulesjust the rhythm of a man who had been split across yards and phone lines and needed one thing that answered immediately.
Jessica met every thrust, legs locked high around his waist, mouth open against his ear, the controlled security voice broken into raw sound. Her breasts moved under his chest. When he sucked a nipple into his mouth she clenched around him and swore.
"Harder."
He gave it to her. The headboard answered. She came first, sharp and shaking, thighs locked, a broken noise punched out of her throat, and he did not stop.
He worked her through it until she was gasping and pushing at his shoulder from sensitivity, then flipped her onto her knees, gripped her hips, and took her deeper from behind.
The view of her backthe scar, the muscle, the way her ass pushed back onto him even while she buried her face in the pillownearly finished him.
When he reached around and rubbed her clit she came again, messier, wetter, and that pulled him over the edge. He buried himself deep and ground out every pulse while she clenched around him and swore into the cotton, her free hand fisted in the sheet.
They fell sideways into the wrecked bedding.
Jessica stared at the ceiling, breath slowing, one arm flung over her eyes. Sweat cooled at her temples. "If Rowena knocks, I’m not on duty."
"She won’t."
"Your yard woman" Jessica did not finish the sentence. She dropped her arm and looked at him, eyes clearer, the hardness already starting to rebuild around the edges.
"I don’t need a map of your week. I don’t need names. I need this not to be the only time you remember the house has a pulse."
"It won’t be."
She nodded once, as if filing an answer she would test later on the perimeter, then sat up and reached for the sports bra and the blacks.
Dressing looked like armour going back on. "I’m sleeping until fifteen hundred. Don’t schedule me for anything that isn’t the gate or the wall."
"Done."
At the door she paused, hand on the latch, back still bare in the dim light for a second longer before the top closed.
"You’re sharper when you’ve fucked something that isn’t a problem on a tablet. Try to remember that when the routes get loud."
Then she was gonefootsteps soft down the corridor, a door further along the wing opening and shutting.
Liam lay in the wrecked sheets with the morning climbing the glass and both of his other commitments still marked on the phone across the room: house line on its hour, Thursday after the last truck.
The house had a pulse. He had answered it. Jessica would test whether he meant the rest.
Until then the day could fight for what was left of his attention, and the sheets could hold the proof that the centre had been here, fully, for one hard hour before the rest of the map started pulling again.
