- Chapter 386
Time was of the essence. The testing of the Beyond 9th Circle magic 【Astral Exile】 was arranged directly in the hospital ward.
Among everyone, Professor Duncan's physical condition was the worst. During the few days Ansu was traveling between Lenaya and the City of a Thousand Stars, the professor had fallen into a deep coma and was rushed back to Norvigel.
When Ansu and Celia pushed open the door and entered the ward, he was surrounded by Valger and the doctors. His entire body was sunk deep into the mattress, looking as withered as a piece of dried-up old wood.
But upon sensing the arrival of Ansu and Celia, those eyes, deeply sunken into their sockets, lit up for a brief moment.
“You... have arrived?” Professor Duncan asked in a weak voice. “Did you find a way?”
“You're sharp, Professor.” Ansu sat down by the bedside, keeping his tone as light as possible. “There is indeed a good way.”
Professor Duncan froze for a moment, then struggled to prop himself up. “It's actually true... It seems this old life of mine isn't meant to end just yet!”
Before he could finish, he erupted into a violent fit of coughing. Valger quickly reached out to support his arm. “Professor, don't get too excited!”
“I know, I know...” He waved his hand while panting, his eyes turning red from coughing.
Having learned that Ansu was about to begin the testing, Elder Barnes and a few others also walked over from the neighboring ward.
Their condition was only slightly better than Professor Duncan's, and they also required assistance to walk.
Ansu scanned everyone present and slowly laid out the complete plan.
After he finished speaking, the expressions of those present grew increasingly bizarre.
Time Beacons, returning to the past, Astral Exile... ascending to the Astral Realm?
What on earth was all this...
“Ascending to the Astral Realm?” Valger pushed up his glasses and looked at the two of them in bewilderment. “If it were you and Cult Leader Celia, I would believe it. But the professor is so advanced in age, and his body has deteriorated to this point. How could he possibly endure it? Even the Etheric Realm is fraught with danger; the Astral Realm will only be more...”
“It is a last resort.” Ansu sighed softly, his gaze falling back onto Professor Duncan. “Therefore, Celia and I suggest that we only cast 【Astral Exile】 on your souls.”
He continued to explain.
Celia possessed raw, overwhelming power, but the professor and the elders were different. Furthermore, their bodies had decayed to the absolute limit; stepping into the Astral Realm would likely crush them in an instant.
But the soul was different—by first casting the black magic 【Soul Separation】 and then casting 【Astral Exile】 on the soul itself, they could at least preserve the core of their consciousness.
Once everything was over and the crisis was resolved, with the cult's current level of research, there would still be plenty of time to study methods for reconstructing physical bodies.
Celia took over the conversation, her tone actually a bit lighter than Ansu's. “In my opinion, your path is actually the easiest. Combining Soul Separation with Astral Exile, because you won't be bound by a physical body, will produce a specific effect.”
“Your souls will linger in the crack between the physical body and the Astral Realm, falling into a chaotic, unconscious state. It will be like a deep sleep where you won't feel any pain.”
Watching the various expressions of the professor and the elders, Ansu silently added in his mind: To put it bluntly, they'll be in a vegetative state.
Their minds would be muddled, unaware of where they were or where they were going, unable to feel loneliness or any sense of purpose.
“I don't have any other choice either.” Professor Duncan was the first to speak, forcing a self-deprecating smile. “This is still better than waiting around to die. Waiting until 10:35 only to explode into a pile of flesh and blood... there's no more pathetic way to die than that.”
He paused, as if encouraging himself, or perhaps just murmuring to himself.
“Just take a nap... It'll be fine once I wake up.”
“I agree as well,” Elder Barnes said in a calm tone. “No matter how complex or dangerous the process is, it's still a way to survive.”
He looked at Ansu and Celia, giving a warm smile.
“I trust the Cult Leader and the Hermit, because you two have always created miracles. I hope we can wake up alive. I'm still looking forward to seeing... what the future magic world will look like.”
Ansu gazed intently at this "chief butler" of the cult.
Elder Matthew was aggressive by nature, whereas Elder Barnes was much more tactful and insightful. With this steady old man holding down the fort, the cult's rear had always been reassuring.
But this time, even he could no longer stay behind.
Ansu nodded solemnly. “Leave it to us. We will give it our all.”
Everyone began to make their final preparations. Celia walked to the side to organize her research manuscripts.
Ansu stood in place, his gaze constantly fixed on her back, a lingering trace of worry rising in his eyes.
As if sensing something, Celia turned around and met his gaze.
“What's wrong?”
“They are only going to sleep, but you're different...” Ansu kept his voice very low, filled with concern.
Celia was going to step into the Astral Realm with her physical body, truly venturing into that dangerous and mysterious unknown territory.
She was the one in the greatest danger.
Celia walked over carrying a stack of manuscripts, stopped in front of Ansu, and curled her lips into a smile. “Don't worry.”
She leaned in slightly and lowered her voice.
“I... have touched a divine spark before, you know. Maybe when I go to the Astral Realm, those entities won't even dare to touch me, and might even be afraid of me instead~”
“A divine spark?” Ansu's eyes flickered as he hesitated. “Was it... during the simulation? The time in the City of a Thousand Stars?”
“Yes.” Celia narrowed her eyes, as if looking back at a scene only she had witnessed. “I felt the power of 【Destruction】. Back then, I was the incarnation of the Black Flame, and I really could destroy everything.”
Ansu fell silent for a moment, lost in thought.
In the end, he could only return her smile. “Alright, my Miss Witch is the most amazing.”
