Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

Chapter 132: Whispers Of Love

  • Next Chapter

The darkness breathed.

Then the whisper came again.

"You finally found me."

Dillan couldn’t see its source.

But he knew.

The little girl.

The one who had been appearing beneath the oak tree.

The one who had followed every memory.

The one who had spoken through the Locks.

Dillan slowly turned.

She stood in the darkness.

No chalk.

No smile.

No stitched mouth.

Her face was completely visible now.

She looked like him.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The same exhausted eyes.

The same fear.

The same loneliness.

The same desperate need to be remembered.

Dillan whispered:

"You’re me."

The girl nodded.

"I am the part of you that stayed."

The System appeared.

[IDENTITY CONFIRMED.]

[DESIGNATION: RETAINED SELF.]

[ORIGIN: FIRST VOLUNTARY DEPARTURE.]

[FUNCTION: PRESERVE EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT AFTER LOSS.]

Dillan stared at the words.

"Retained Self..."

The girl looked down.

"You called me something else."

"What?"

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Home."

Dillan’s expression changed.

The word echoed through him.

Home.

A place.

A person.

A feeling.

Something he had spent his entire existence trying to recreate.

"You made me after she left."

The girl nodded.

"You couldn’t accept that she chose to leave."

"So I created you."

"Yes."

"And then I locked you away."

"No."

She looked at him.

"You didn’t lock me away."

The chamber trembled.

"You gave me a job."

Dillan’s eyes narrowed.

"What job?"

The girl’s expression became unbearably sad.

"To remember everyone you lost."

Silence.

She pointed toward the seven Locks.

"Every person who left you."

One Lock glowed.

"Every memory you couldn’t bear."

Another.

"Every goodbye."

Another.

"Every promise you broke."

Another.

"They all came here."

Dillan stared at the doors.

The First Lock.

The Second.

The Third.

The others.

They weren’t prisons.

They were graves for memories.

And she had been sitting among them.

Alone.

For years.

Dillan took a step toward her.

"Why didn’t you tell me?"

She laughed softly.

"Would you have listened?"

Dillan stopped.

The question hurt because he knew the answer.

"No."

"You wanted to save everyone."

She looked at him.

"And I was the only one you never tried to save."

Dillan’s eyes lowered.

"I didn’t know you existed."

"You did."

His head snapped up.

The girl touched her chest.

"You just called me something else."

A memory flashed.

Young Dillan beneath the oak tree.

Crying.

A tiny version of himself sitting beside him.

Young Dillan whispered:

"Stay."

The other child nodded.

"I will."

The memory vanished.

Dillan understood.

"You were the first Anchor."

The System flickered.

[CORRECTION.]

[FIRST ANCHOR: INCORRECT.]

[ANCHOR DESIGNATION: NONE.]

Dillan frowned.

"Then what are you?"

The girl smiled.

"The reason Anchors were possible."

The System went silent.

For the first time since Dillan had known it, there was no immediate answer.

Then the chamber shook violently.

Cracks spread across the walls.

The girl looked frightened.

"They found me."

"Who?"

She didn’t answer.

"Who found you?"

Her eyes lifted toward the ceiling.

"Everyone who benefited from you forgetting."

Dillan’s blood ran cold.

Celia suddenly shouted from behind him.

"Dillan!"

He turned.

Celia stood beside Sasha and the others.

But something was wrong.

Celia’s shadow was missing.

Dillan stared.

"Where’s your shadow?"

Celia looked down.

Her face went pale.

"I don’t know."

Sasha stepped closer to her.

Then stopped.

"Dillan..."

"What?"

Sasha pointed behind Celia.

A second figure stood there.

A woman.

Long hair.

White dress.

The same silhouette Dillan had seen inside the ninth Lock.

But this time, her face was visible.

Dillan recognized her.

Not because he remembered her name.

Because his heart did.

The woman looked at him.

"You let me go once."

Her eyes shifted toward Celia.

"But you never asked where I went."

Celia whispered:

"No..."

The woman smiled.

"I came back."

The System erupted.

[UNKNOWN ENTITY DETECTED.]

[ORIGIN: FIRST VOLUNTARY DEPARTURE.]

[CURRENT STATUS: RETURNED.]

[RELATION TO DILLAN RUREN: UNRESOLVED.]

Sasha moved in front of Dillan.

The woman looked at her.

"You’re still afraid."

Sasha’s expression hardened.

"I’m not."

The woman smiled.

"You should be."

The Retained Self suddenly grabbed Dillan’s hand.

Her fingers were ice cold.

"Don’t let her speak your name."

Dillan looked at her.

"Why?"

The girl stared at the woman.

"Because she isn’t here to be remembered."

The woman smiled.

"She came to collect something."

Dillan’s heart sank.

"What?"

The woman raised her hand.

The System flashed one final warning.

[WARNING.]

[ENTITY HAS INITIATED MEMORY CLAIM.]

The woman whispered:

"The choice you made when you let me go."

The woman raised her hand.

The chamber changed.

Every Lock disappeared.

Every door vanished.

Even the floor beneath Dillan’s feet dissolved into darkness.

Only one thing remained.

A memory.

His memory.

The woman stood inside it.

"You let me go," she whispered.

Dillan stared at her.

"Yes."

"You promised not to follow."

"Yes."

"You promised not to call me back."

Dillan’s jaw tightened.

"Yes."

Her eyes softened.

"And you kept your promise."

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the woman smiled.

"So why are you afraid?"

Dillan didn’t answer.

Because he understood.

She wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t seeking revenge.

She had returned because something was unfinished.

Sasha stepped beside Dillan.

"What do you want from him?"

The woman looked at Sasha.

"The same thing you wanted."

Sasha’s expression hardened.

"What?"

"To know whether he would choose me."

Sasha froze.

Dillan looked between them.

The woman continued.

"But there is a difference."

She touched her chest.

"You asked him to choose you."

Her gaze shifted to Dillan.

"I left so he could prove that he could survive without choosing me."

The Retained Self tightened her grip on Dillan’s hand.

"Don’t listen."

The woman glanced toward her.

"You’ve been listening for years."

The Retained Self stepped forward.

"And you left."

"Yes."

"And he suffered."

"Yes."

"You knew he would."

"Yes."

The girl’s expression twisted.

"Then why did you do it?"

The woman answered quietly.

"Because staying would have made his fear stronger."

Dillan looked at her.

"You thought leaving would save me."

"No."

She shook her head.

"I thought leaving would give you a chance to save yourself."

The words struck him harder than expected.

The System appeared.

[MEMORY CLAIM: INTERRUPTED.]

[ENTITY HAS NOT REMOVED MEMORY.]

[ENTITY HAS REQUESTED VOLUNTARY RETURN.]

Dillan frowned.

"Return?"

The woman nodded.

"The memory I took when I left."

"You took something?"

"Yes."

"What?"

She pointed at his chest.

"Your ability to accept goodbye."

Dillan went still.

The Retained Self whispered:

"That was the part he couldn’t bear losing."

The woman nodded.

"So he created you."

She looked at the Retained Self.

"To hold it."

The girl shook her head.

"No."

"Yes."

"No!"

The Retained Self suddenly screamed.

The darkness erupted.

Crimson cracks tore through the space.

Dillan grabbed her before she fell.

She clung to him.

"If she gives it back..."

Her voice broke.

"I disappear."

Dillan froze.

The woman didn’t deny it.

"The Retained Self was created to preserve what you couldn’t accept."

Dillan looked at the girl.

"If I accept it..."

"You won’t need her anymore."

The girl’s fingers tightened around his clothes.

"Don’t."

Dillan’s chest hurt.

The entire purpose of his journey had become painfully clear.

He had spent years trying to save everyone.

Trying to prevent every disappearance.

Trying to preserve every bond.

And now the first person who had ever left was offering him the thing he had spent years refusing to accept.

Goodbye.

The System appeared.

[FINAL MEMORY EXCHANGE AVAILABLE.]

[OPTION ONE: RETAINED SELF REMAINS.]

[OPTION TWO: MEMORY OF ACCEPTANCE RESTORED.]

[WARNING: OPTION TWO MAY ALTER RETAINED SELF’S EXISTENCE.]

Dillan stared at the options.

Sasha stepped closer.

"Dillan..."

He looked at her.

"What would you do?"

Sasha shook her head.

"This isn’t my choice."

Dillan’s eyes softened.

She was right.

He looked at the Retained Self.

She was crying now.

"I don’t want to disappear."

Dillan crouched in front of her.

"You won’t disappear."

"You don’t know that."

"No."

He placed his hand over hers.

"But I know something else."

"What?"

"I don’t want you to exist only because I’m afraid."

The girl stared at him.

"You’re choosing her."

"No."

Dillan looked toward the woman.

"I choose neither."

The woman smiled.

"That answer again."

Dillan nodded.

"I won’t sacrifice you to preserve her."

He looked at the Retained Self.

"And I won’t keep you trapped inside me just because losing you hurts."

The girl began crying harder.

"Then what happens to me?"

Dillan hugged her.

"We find out."

The System went silent.

Then:

[UNSUPPORTED CHOICE DETECTED.]

Dillan smiled faintly.

"Good."

The woman laughed softly.

For the first time, she looked relieved.

"That’s the answer I was waiting for."

The Retained Self’s body began glowing.

But she didn’t disappear.

Instead, the crimson light separated from her.

A small sphere floated between them.

The woman reached toward it.

Then stopped.

She looked at Dillan.

"May I?"

Dillan nodded.

She touched the sphere.

The memory returned.

Not to Dillan.

To everyone.

The chamber filled with images of every goodbye Dillan had ever experienced.

Every person who left.

Every person he failed to save.

Every person who chose another path.

And finally...

The woman walking away beneath the oak tree.

Dillan watched his younger self remain where he was.

Crying.

But not following.

The memory ended.

The System appeared.

[ACCEPTANCE MEMORY RESTORED.]

[RETENTION PROTOCOL: DISABLED.]

[RETAINED SELF: RECLASSIFICATION REQUIRED.]

The girl looked at Dillan.

Her tears were gone.

"So..."

She smiled.

"Do I still have to stay?"

Dillan shook his head.

"No."

"Do I have to leave?"

"No."

She stared at him.

"Then what am I?"

Dillan smiled.

"Someone who gets to choose."

The girl slowly smiled back.

The System flashed.

[RECLASSIFICATION COMPLETE.]

[DESIGNATION REMOVED.]

[IDENTITY STATUS: AUTONOMOUS.]

The woman watched silently.

Then she turned toward the darkness.

"Now you can finally remember my name."

Dillan looked up.

"What is it?"

She smiled.

And said one word.

"Mara."

The chamber shattered.

And every System notification disappeared.

For the first time since Dillan could remember...

there was no System at all.
