Chapter 143 -116: A Sleepless Night Discussing Life

In the luxurious room, Lorne Jackson lay quietly in bed. Having drunk too much, he was sleeping so soundly that he didn’t even notice the Priest taking a blood sample.

Lorne Jackson’s condition was dire.

But Catherine found the solution Dora proposed difficult to accept.

Turning her brother into a zombie was an unseemly matter for a noble.

It was tantamount to turning from a human into a monster.

This made it hard not to suspect that Dora had ulterior motives.

She would save Lorne by turning him into a zombie, but in doing so, Lorne would permanently lose his right to the family inheritance.

No noble family would ever let a zombie inherit their estate.

No matter what other schemes Mary had, she would no longer be able to use Lorne. This struck at the very root of the problem.

For the overall situation, Dora’s method was, in fact, a good one.

“After he becomes a zombie, will he still be conscious? Will he have a mind?”

Lian asked on behalf of his fiancée.

“Lord Lian, I’m speaking of a zombie-like existence. His consciousness and mind would be preserved, of course, and he could still communicate normally. His body, however, would lose its vitality. He couldn’t eat and would require regular maintenance with preservatives, or else he’d rot. With my help, living to the age of ninety-nine would be no problem. His skin would be paler than a normal person’s, and he wouldn’t need a washroom anymore. He could still live harmoniously with his wife and children, and as long as he doesn’t bite them, he won’t transmit the virus.”

Dora explained in greater detail to the group.

The Priest was the first to object. He stood up and declared righteously, “Our lives are given to us by God, and God can take them away at any time. Your actions are undoubtedly a blasphemy against the great God of Tiger! The Holy Empire does not permit such monsters to live within the High Wall. This is irresponsible to everyone.”

“Oh, my apologies. I forgot about your duties as a Priest. But I’m sure you can choose to pretend you didn’t hear that. After all, I’m only making a suggestion, and there’s no harm in a suggestion.”

Dora said with a smile.

The Priest silently cursed her as a heretic.

Lian gave Mina a look. The clever and sensible Mina immediately led the Priest out of Lorne’s room and escorted him back to his guest quarters.

“My apologies, Priest, for the trouble. However, if you can think of any other way to save Young Master Lorne, the Blue Moon Territory would be eternally grateful. Also, I hope you can keep this matter confidential.”

Mina took a land deed from her clothes and silently slipped it into the Priest’s pocket.

The Priest nodded in satisfaction. He decided to keep his mouth shut about the matter and to occasionally vacation in the Blue Moon Territory. He quite liked the style of the place.

Catherine, Dora, and Lian remained in the room with the passed-out Lorne, still discussing the momentous question of whether to turn him into a zombie.

“How about this: let’s ask the person in question for his opinion.”

Lian felt that since Lorne still had seven days to consider, respecting his choice was the best way to avoid needless mental anguish.

Catherine thought Lian had a point. She also wanted to find another solution within those seven days.

Dora shrugged and left with the two of them.

“Catherine, Mary and her people probably haven’t left the Blue Moon Territory yet. I’m worried you might be targeted for assassination again. I have to stay and protect you. I want to stay with you tonight.”

Lian said worriedly, taking Catherine’s hand.

Catherine had been inseparable from Dora these past few days, and Lian hadn’t experienced any nightly bliss for a long time. He missed the fragrant warmth of her embrace.

The sharp-witted Dora instantly understood Lian’s meaning. She immediately grabbed Catherine’s other hand.

“Catherine, your brother’s life is hanging by a thread! At a time like this, you should be with me, staying up all night thinking of how to save Lorne Jackson.”

Catherine nodded slightly, her expression grave. “Yes,” she said.

“Why can’t she stay up all night with me thinking about how to save her brother Lorne? I’m the more suitable candidate. My teacher is Pinocchio, a renowned divine doctor.”

Lian refused to back down.

“Are you sure spending the night with you means ‘thinking of how to save Lorne Jackson’ and not ‘exploring the meaning of life’ all night long?”

Dora raised an eyebrow, exposing Lian with her sharp words.

Without batting an eye, Lian wrapped his other arm around Catherine’s slender waist. “I was traumatized by Mary today. She’s made me terrified of women. Catherine, if you don’t comfort me, I might end up on the same path as the Grand Priest.”

“Catherine, don’t listen to his nonsense! He was holding a severed head and was about to kiss it. How could he possibly be traumatized?”

Dora refused to yield an inch.

Catherine looked at her best friend and her fiancé and sighed sorrowfully.

“Dora, you’re my only friend, my dearest friend. I hope you can help me think of another way. Unless it’s the absolute last resort, I don’t want my brother to become a monster.”

Catherine looked at Dora earnestly.

Dora nodded. “Of course. I’ll figure out the best method for you.”

“I’m sorry, but I’ll be staying with Lian tonight. He’s a divine doctor; maybe he can think of another way.”

Seeing the apologetic look on Catherine’s face, Dora instantly deflated like a balloon.

“Fine, fine. I respect your choice.”

Watching Dora’s dejected figure retreat, Lian felt smug. ‘In the end, Pinocchio still came out on top.’

Catherine led Lian to the Lord’s master bedroom.

After they bathed, they did not become intimate.

Lian knew Catherine was too dejected and wasn’t in the mood. He simply held her, letting her curl up in his arms like a baby as they both fell asleep.
