Mommy, Daddy Has Already Regretted It
Chapter 190: No Matter How Heartless, I Was Born From You and Inherited Your Genes
Chapter 190: Chapter 190: No Matter How Heartless, I Was Born From You and Inherited Your Genes
Mrs. Kendrick felt her point was well-made. "Mr. Sloan, I couldn’t care less about how Laura Jennings acts up in the Sloan family, but if she targets the children, don’t blame me for showing no mercy!"
Zachery rubbed his nose. He suddenly felt his daddy was catching a stray bullet, since he was the one who had insisted on coming. "Grandma..."
Mrs. Kendrick looked at ’Christian’ pulling her sleeve. She suddenly paused her steps, feeling a strong sense of familiarity.
Was this what they meant by brotherly resemblance? The way ’Christian’ was acting so coy was exactly like Zachery.
"Alright, alright. Grandma isn’t blaming your daddy. But that muddle-headed Laura Jennings—I will not allow her to come visit you in the name of being your grandmother." Saying that, Mrs. Kendrick furrowed her brows again. "And that boy Zachery, really. How could he let you go alone and not even notify me..."
’Christian’ tugged at her sleeve again.
Mrs. Kendrick looked down and met ’Christian’s’ big, watery eyes. For a moment, she was in a daze.
Wait a minute. This look, this little pleading expression—why did it look more and more like Zachery the longer she looked!
Just then, Iris Sloan arrived at the York family’s door with the other two little ones.
Mrs. Kendrick looked at ’Christian’ and then at the ’Zachery’ beside Iris. She suddenly fell silent. She abruptly remembered that her father and her youngest uncle loved tinkering with strange things in their spare time, among which was the Disguise Technique.
Back then, Zachery was a sweet-talker, constantly following Old Mr. Kendrick around and sweetly calling him "Great-Grandpa." He coaxed the old man into such a good mood that he taught the boy everything. Zachery’s Disguise Technique had essentially reached the point where the fake could effortlessly pass for the real. So...
Mrs. Kendrick once again looked at the ’Christian’ beside her.
Oh, so this ’Christian’ was actually Zachery. Well, that was fine then.
Mrs. Kendrick waved her hand. "Let’s head back. Oh, right, Estelle, there’s no need to feed ’Christian’ again when we get back. Look at his tummy—he probably ate his fill at the Yorks’."
As soon as she finished speaking, Zachery let out a burp.
Estelle Lockwood was speechless. No wonder Thea York was so angry.
Since the children were fine, Iris finally felt at ease and prepared to return to the Sloan family. To her surprise, Nathaniel Sloan got into the car with her.
"Nathaniel?"
Nathaniel nodded. "I’m looking for Ms. Jennings."
At the Sloan estate, Laura Jennings was humming a tune in a very good mood. That sickly Christian had gone to the York family; his heart probably couldn’t take it, could it? She originally wanted to be a good grandmother too, but it was Christian who disrespected her time and time again. That was why she wanted a new grandson!
Just as she was thinking this, the main door was suddenly pushed open. Laura said impatiently, "Who is..."
She turned around and was met with Nathaniel’s icy eyes.
Laura choked on her words, a trace of panic rising in her chest. However, believing herself to be Nathaniel’s mother, she felt emboldened. "What are you doing! Don’t you know how to knock? So ill-mannered!"
Nathaniel raised his eyes indifferently. "When it comes to being ill-mannered, I truly cannot compare to you, Ms. Jennings."
"Say that again if you dare!"
Nathaniel nodded. "Ms. Jennings, you are ill-mannered."
Laura was exasperated. "How dare you call me ill-mannered!"
Nathaniel spoke unhurriedly. "It’s good that you know."
"You—"
Laura was about to blow her top when Nathaniel calmly lifted his gaze. "Sending Christian to the Yorks’ and deliberately having Mrs. York hint to him that he’s about to be abandoned... Did you feel that this grandson was disobedient, Ms. Jennings, so you wanted to swap him out for a new one?"
Having her true intentions exposed, Laura’s eyes darted away in extreme guilt. "Nonsense! What does that have to do with me!"
Nathaniel nodded. "It doesn’t matter if you don’t admit it. I’ll just take it as your guilty conscience acting up. I am holding you accountable for this."
"Nathaniel Sloan!" Hearing this, Laura became unhappy and screamed at the top of her lungs, "I am your mother! You’re treating your mother like this over a child? You heartless wretch!"
Nathaniel slowly smiled. Mom? Mother?
He had never thought much about it before. He merely assumed his familial bonds were thin. But now that Laura was becoming increasingly insatiable and her true colors were gradually being exposed, he had developed strong doubts about his own identity.
However, his expression remained unchanged, not showing the slightest hint of suspicion. He said indifferently, "No matter how heartless I am, I was born to you and inherited your genes. What can I do about it?"
Liam Sloan, who had rushed over excitedly after hearing that his brother had returned, walked in just in time to hear this. He nearly stumbled. "Pfft—"
Laura’s face instantly turned pitch-black. She trembled with anger. "Nathaniel, Nathaniel, you..."
"There is no need to be so angry, Ms. Jennings. In fact, I am also beginning to doubt whether I am truly your son." Nathaniel spoke calmly, his expression tranquil and indifferent, but his words were enough to infuriate Laura half to death. "After all, you have no redeeming qualities, Ms. Jennings, not a single merit to your name. Aside from being ’heartless,’ it seems I haven’t inherited a single thing from you. So, are you truly my biological mother?"
Hiding in the shadows, Liam looked at Laura thoughtfully.
Laura glared at Nathaniel, her eyes flashing with a mix of panic and guilt. "Nathaniel, you have no conscience! For the sake of a son, you won’t even acknowledge me as your mother!"
Hearing the commotion, Ethan Sloan walked out and scolded with a frown, "What are you arguing about?"
Laura cried and made a scene. "Ethan, I don’t want to live anymore! Nathaniel actually suspects that I’m not his biological mother! People always call me the mistress, but if it weren’t for him, would I have been reduced to being the mistress?!"
Ethan frowned at Nathaniel and said disapprovingly, "Nathaniel, what is the meaning of this? Apologize to your mother."
"Dad, Mom, what are you arguing about?" Right at that moment, Liam walked out from the corner, pretending he had just arrived with a look of surprise.
Before Ethan could speak, Liam was already looking at Laura exaggeratedly, putting on the "brainless" persona that Laura favored the most. "Mom, I know you don’t like Christian, but you can’t just do that right in front of my brother!"
Laura shrieked instinctively, "Liam, you—"
"Hey, Mom, don’t be mad, don’t be mad!" Liam cast a cautious glance at Nathaniel and then leaned in closer. He lowered his voice, but not entirely, looking for all the world like an arrogant rich brat. "Mom, let me tell you, if you really wanted Christian to get lost, you could have just kicked him out! Why did you have to make Thea say all that? Saying that after she marries my brother and has a child, Christian will become a pitiful little thing with no father or mother. Aren’t you just cursing my brother?"
Ethan snapped his head toward Laura.
Acting as if he didn’t realize what he had just said, Liam continued flamboyantly. "Mom, I know you’ve been annoyed with Christian for a long time. He’s just a sickly kid, yet he dares to be the heir of Evernight International. But even if you want to replace him, you should use a gentler approach, shouldn’t you? If you actually anger him into an early grave, wouldn’t my brother fight you to the bitter end?"
The surrounding servants were utterly speechless.
The butler remained dead silent.
Everyone’s expressions changed as they looked at Laura. So, when Thea York had visited earlier and Laura immediately sent Young Mr. Christian to the Yorks’, this was what she was plotting!
No wonder Mr. Sloan was so furious. Even Mr. Liam, the spoiled rich brat raised under Laura’s pampering, couldn’t stand watching this anymore!
Ethan’s face turned livid. Unable to utter another word of reprimand, he glared at Laura furiously, flicked his sleeves, and stormed off.
