Chapter 38: You’ve Been Targeted by a Ghost
Chapter 38: Chapter 38: You’ve Been Targeted by a Ghost
[What the hell is Fu Zimo trying to do? The Huo Family already debunked the rumors! What’s he still fussing about?]
[It’s just a game, why is he being so loud? Is he insecure or something?]
[Who plays a game by hitting someone’s sore spot like that?]
[Our Zimo just responded to the rumors openly too.]
[If you have nothing to hide, just answer the question directly!]
"What a boring question." A faint smile played on Gu Qingyin’s lips, but it didn’t reach her eyes. "Are you intentionally going easy on us? There’s no need. We can handle it."
Huo Xinghai also smiled. "Maybe he’s just kind-hearted by nature."
Hearing the mother and son’s backhanded compliments, Fu Zimo didn’t get annoyed. He pressed on, "Have you decided on your answer?"
Huo Xinghai scoffed. "Gu Qingyin is my mom. We’re mother and son."
"Ha." Fu Zimo laughed out loud. "The viewers online might not be able to see clearly through the screen, but we can see you perfectly well right here. Gu Qingyin is too young. How could she possibly have a son as old as you?"
Gu Qingyin sighed. "Is it my fault I look young?" She furrowed her brow in mock distress. "So what should I do? Do you want me to pull out my ID card for you to see?"
"There’s no need." Huo Xinghai said in a gentle voice, "He’s no one important. He can believe it or not."
Hearing Gu Qingyin offer to show her ID, Fu Zimo had felt a flash of panic, suspecting he had misjudged. But Huo Xinghai’s follow-up remark immediately calmed him down.
’So it really is fake. These two are putting on an act for me!’
Fu Zimo sneered inwardly, but his face showed a look of concern for them. "Since you can prove it, it’s better to just show it. You can take this opportunity during the live broadcast to clear up the rumors. Otherwise, for a real mother and son to always be accused of acting... how disgusting."
Concerned for them? Not a chance. It was just a strategic retreat to press his advantage.
Huo Xinghai’s gaze suddenly darkened. He was about to stand up and lash out when Gu Qingyin pressed his arm down. She said with a beaming smile, "Kids these days have such nerve. And they’re especially good at taking a mile when you give them an inch."
Fu Zimo’s brow twitched. "If it’s proven that I’m wrong, I can apologize publicly."
"Oh, how polite." Gu Qingyin clicked her tongue twice. "As much as I’d love to prove you wrong, it’s a shame... In this round, I don’t have the lowest card, so what you say doesn’t apply to me."
Gu Qingyin blinked and said encouragingly, "Try harder next round." She tilted her chin at Huo Xinghai. "Shuffle the cards. Let’s keep playing."
Huo Xinghai suddenly broke into a smile and leaned forward to collect the cards.
Seeing this, the Lin Family Siblings subconsciously pushed their cards toward him. The absent-minded Feng Xia followed suit, leaving only Fu Zimo in an awkward position, not knowing whether to hand over his cards or not.
Of course, Fu Zimo wasn’t willing to let it go. He had waited so long for this opportunity. But harping on it any longer would just make him look like he was making a scene.
After a two-second struggle, Fu Zimo tossed his cards down. "Fine. For the sake of your reputation, I’ll just have to try harder."
[Ooh, you can cut the tension with a knife.]
[Is there something wrong with Fu Zimo? Why is he so nosy?]
[I don’t get it. So what if he proves they aren’t mother and son?]
[He probably thinks he can use this scandal to kick Haibao’er out of the entertainment industry?]
[Hmm... so naive it’s almost cute.]
[Suddenly, I’m kind of shipping them. What do I do?!]
[Sis! Don’t have such wild tastes!]
The game continued. In this round, Gu Qingyin got the highest card, and Feng Xia got the lowest.
Fu Zimo’s expression changed at the sight. Just as he thought Feng Xia was about to be put on the spot, Gu Qingyin instead borrowed a pen and paper from Lin Tian, wrote something on it, then quickly folded it into an octagon and handed it to Feng Xia.
Gu Qingyin smiled and instructed, "Keep this on you at all times. Don’t let it leave your side for twenty-four hours, and don’t open it."
Feng Xia looked at the octagonal piece of paper, hesitating. But with so many people watching, she braced herself and took it. Noticing no physical discomfort, she quietly breathed a sigh of relief.
’Right,’ she thought. ’It’s not written on yellow paper, nor with vermillion. It’s useless.’
They played a few more rounds, but Fu Zimo was just a bystander the whole time. The highest and lowest cards never landed in his hands, and by the time the game ended, he never got another chance to press his questions.
Gu Qingyin stood up and smiled at him. "Seems you didn’t try hard enough."
Fu Zimo forced a smile. "A pity I couldn’t help you clarify things this time. Hopefully, there’s a next time."
Huo Xinghai scoffed. "You may be living by the sea now, but the Huo Family’s private affairs are still none of your business."
Getting called out so sarcastically by the person himself, the smile on Fu Zimo’s face nearly crumbled. He looked toward the director, stiffly changing the subject. "What are we doing next?"
The director suppressed his excitement and replied in a normal voice, "There are no arrangements for now. The guests can return to the villa to rest for a bit. We’ll gather on the beach at seven this evening for a bonfire party."
This spontaneous game the guests started was a massive win for him; the number of viewers in the live stream had more than doubled!
Fu Zimo led Feng Xia away first. Gu Qingyin called out with a beaming smile, "Remember to keep the thing I gave you. I’ll be checking on it tonight."
Feng Xia’s steps faltered. A sudden unease crept into her heart. ’This piece of paper really is useless, right?’
After saying her piece, Gu Qingyin paid them no more mind and walked over to Lin Tian. "Do you mind if I use the restroom?"
Lin Tian looked listless and felt a chill all over; her illness seemed to be flaring up again. She sniffled and said spiritlessly, "I’ll take you. The restroom here is well-hidden, almost as if they were afraid someone would find it."
Gu Qingyin studied her expression but said nothing.
When the two reached the restroom door, Gu Qingyin pulled Lin Tian inside as she opened it.
Lin Tian was stunned. "Sister Qing?"
Gu Qingyin gave her a reassuring smile, turned off both of their microphones, and casually set up a Barrier to block out the Yin Qi.
Lin Tian immediately felt her body start to warm up.
Seeing that the color had returned to her face, Gu Qingyin asked, "Do you believe in ghosts?"
Hearing that word, Lin Tian felt a chill in her heart for some reason, a creepy, hair-raising sensation, even though she was an atheist.
"What do you mean?"
"You’re being targeted by a ghost. The chill you feel is because you’ve been tainted by too much Yin Qi." Gu Qingyin stated it as a matter of fact, not caring whether the other party could accept it. "I can help you, but not for free. You’ll have to pay me a Fate Fee."
Lin Tian’s jaw dropped, and she stood stunned for several seconds.
It was all too incredible. If anyone else had said this, she would have thought they were trying to scam her. But the person in front of her was Huo Xinghai’s mother. The Huo Family was so wealthy, why would they be interested in the pittance she had in her pocket?
Lin Tian’s lips trembled. "How can you prove that what you’re saying is true?"
"I can open your Heavenly Eye," Gu Qingyin offered with great sincerity. "If you’re not afraid, that is."
"No, thanks!" Lin Tian refused instinctively. She did not want to see a ghost. If it was real, it would traumatize her for life! It was a gamble she couldn’t afford to take!
Lin Tian stared intently at Gu Qingyin for a few seconds before asking in a low voice, "The Fate Fee... how much is it?"
