Drastic changes would be difficult

The following morning, while the others prepared to depart after eating breakfast, I listened to a report from Alfred.

It was in regards to what had been discussed with the others. Rules about the treatment of familiars.

While I had not been a part of that discussion, Alfred had spoken on my behalf.

We wanted to have our ideas in order, so they could be put into action quickly when Mr. Ekenhart visited.

The general direction was that we should try to change things gradually. However, it seemed like it would be even slower than I was expecting.

While the guards would intervene in extreme cases, there was still a lot that was dependent on the person who made the contract with the monster.

Still, once the draft had been passed, notices would be issued throughout the duke’s lands. And so many more people would be aware… If they saw the mistreatment of familiars, then they might report it.

Also, we wanted people to not hide the fact that they had familiars. This was so we could have more information about who had monsters.

Both Claire and Mr. Euto were in agreement that they would like for people to have to register when making a contract with a familiar. And those who refused would not be able to enter towns or villages.

However, this would be quite difficult.

Having people manage the registrations, having people enforce them. The annual costs would be quite high.

Regardless, there were still not that many people who had familiars. So things would slowly change as people got used to the idea of having monster companions.

After all, most people were still afraid of them.

Volgrau, for instance, was a wolf. They were known to attack humans, and so some people might be afraid of him for that reason alone.

In any case, Mr. Euto had promised that once things started to change in the duke’s territory, he would do what he could to make it spread to the rest of the country as well.

“Thank you, Alfred.”

“Not at all. Though, I still think it would have been better if you participated.”

“It’s fine. I don’t know much about that sort of thing anyway…”

I had no talent for deciding things or governing.

And so even if I had my own ideas and wishes, I wanted to avoid getting too involved in such things. Both now and in the future.

I was just an ordinary civilian, after all.

“We’re almost there…”

“Wuff!”

“Ah, papa. Look!”

“You can see the village entrance.”

After I finished talking with Alfred, we continued our journey to Range Village.

Today, I was riding on Leo with Claire and Liza.

As the campsite was already quite close, it wasn’t long before we could see the village up ahead.

“I wonder if the whole village will come out to greet us like last time?”

“Indeed. We did send word ahead, so they should be prepared. Besides, the villagers are very fond of you and Leo.”

“I don’t know if they are that fond of us. But I’m happy either way. Though, I think they will mostly want to impress you, Claire. Since you are the daughter of a duke.”

“It’s not like there is a rule that all villagers must come out and greet a duke’s daughter… Even if it was my father, they would not need to do that. After all, the townsfolk don’t come out to greet us in Ractos.”

“Ah, that’s true.”

It seemed like something that might happen in a smaller village… After all, it had been like that in Bleiyu Village.

Still, it was proof that not just me and Leo, but the people related to the duke’s household were well liked by the people here… At least, that’s what I told myself…
