My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 408: The Seven Ruins Awaken
For several seconds, nothing happened. The ancient cannon slowly lowered its enormous barrel until it disappeared behind the surrounding buildings, and the blue light inside it faded.
The streets began to calm as emergency crews moved back into position, Hunters lowered their weapons, and the people watching from rooftops started making their way down.
Kai didn’t move. He was still looking at the sky. There was nothing there, no monster, no airship, not even a strange cloud, but Starbreaker was still glowing faintly in his hand.
Sera noticed. "You’re still looking."
"Something was there," Kai said.
"Was?"
"I don’t know."
Sera looked up at the empty sky. "That’s reassuring."
Kai glanced at her. "I didn’t say it was dangerous."
"You also didn’t say it wasn’t."
"That’s because I don’t know."
Sera sighed. "Sometimes I miss when your answers were simple."
"Guys!" Lily shouted behind them.
Kai turned. Lily was staring at the device in her hands, her expression completely changed.
"What?"
"The network."
A low vibration passed through the ground. It wasn’t a tremor, but something deeper, and the ancient road beneath their feet began to glow. Another light appeared in the distance, then another, and another. Kai slowly turned as ancient structures all across Nexus began to wake, first one by one and then all at once.
"Seven," Lily said, staring at her readings.
Gabriel looked toward the sky. "The seven ruins again?"
"No." Lily looked up, her face pale. "These are different. They’re all inside the city. Nexus has seven of its own."
On the eastern side of the city, a massive tower that had been buried beneath several modern buildings lit up and pushed its upper section through the streets. Stone shifted, ancient metal unfolded, and an enormous circular lens opened toward the sky.
Lily’s eyes widened. "An observatory."
A beam of pale light rose from the tower. It didn’t attack anything. It simply reached higher and higher until it disappeared into the clouds, and for less than a second, countless points of light appeared across the sky above Nexus, like stars in the middle of the day.
Sera stared upward. "Those weren’t there before."
Kai’s eyes narrowed. "No."
The lights vanished, and before anyone could react, a second signal appeared. Far across the city, an enormous underground structure began to glow, and the ground shook as ancient doors opened and heat poured into the streets. A massive forge buried beneath Nexus was coming alive. Orange light spilled from its chambers, huge mechanical arms unfolded, and ancient furnaces ignited one after another.
"A forge," Lily said, looking at her scanner.
Kai watched the machines start moving. "What are they making?"
Lily’s scanner struggled to read the energy. "I don’t know." Then she frowned. "Wait. It isn’t making anything. The machines are preparing themselves."
"For what?"
"I don’t know."
A third light appeared beneath the Church district, where the Archive lay. Ancient doors opened deep in the earth, and thousands of crystal records rose from hidden chambers, arranging themselves into enormous floating circles. Images flickered across their surfaces, cities and wars, ancient Hunters and ruins, and Disasters and civilizations that had vanished long before modern humanity existed.
Gabriel stared at them. "The Archive is accessing everything it has."
"Why?" Lily asked.
Gabriel’s expression turned serious. "I don’t know."
The images vanished, leaving a single symbol, a circle divided into seven sections. One section lit up, then another, until all seven were glowing.
"It’s synchronizing," Lily whispered.
Kai looked at Starbreaker, and the relic responded immediately.
ANCIENT NETWORK.
SEVEN NODES DETECTED.
SYNCHRONIZATION: 1%.
The number began climbing, 2%, then 5%, then 11%.
Sera stared at it. "Is that supposed to happen?"
Kai shook his head. "I don’t know."
"Great."
The fourth signal came from the western district. At first, nothing happened, and then an enormous structure that looked almost like a cemetery rose from beneath the streets. There were no bodies and no monsters, and no graves in any normal sense. Instead, thousands of stone pillars emerged from the ground, each one carved with a name. Some were in languages Kai had never seen, and others weren’t names at all, but dates, locations, and markers of entire civilizations.
Lily walked up to one and stopped. "This isn’t a graveyard."
"What is it?" Gabriel asked.
Lily touched the stone. "A record of people who disappeared."
Kai looked across the enormous field of pillars, thousands of them, maybe millions. "How many?"
Lily shook her head. "Too many."
Every pillar lit up at once, and a wave of pale light rolled across the field. For a moment, every name became visible, and then they faded, and a single message appeared above the structure.
MEMORY PRESERVED.
The fifth signal came from deep beneath the city, where one of the ancient transportation systems opened. A circular structure appeared, and unlike the Seventh Gate, it didn’t show another world. It showed only darkness, until a thin line of blue light cut across its center and the whole structure began to rotate.
Lily’s scanner went wild. "That’s impossible."
Sera looked at her. "You’ve said that a lot lately."
"This is different. This gate isn’t opening."
"Then what is it doing?" Kai asked.
Lily swallowed. "Mapping."
The gate projected hundreds of lines into the air, stretching across Nexus, past the city, across the continent, and farther still, until they disappeared into the sky. The ancient transportation system wasn’t creating a path. It was finding one.
The sixth signal produced no light, no machines, and no energy at all. Instead, every ancient inscription across Nexus lit up at the same moment, on walls, roads, pillars, and ruins, and even on markings buried beneath modern buildings.
Lily stared at the city. "It’s activating every warning inscription."
"Can you read them?" Gabriel asked.
"Some." Lily stepped closer to one of the ancient walls, and her expression slowly changed as the symbols shifted and translated themselves.
DO NOT OPEN THE SKY.
DO NOT WAKE THE SLEEPING NETWORK.
PREPARATION MUST COME BEFORE TRANSIT.
Sera looked at Kai. "That sounds bad."
"It does," Kai said.
"But the system is doing all of that right now."
"Yes."
Sera looked around. "Should we stop it?"
Kai didn’t answer. He looked at the seven lights, then at Starbreaker, which was no longer just glowing. It was vibrating in his hand.
The seventh signal came from the central structure deep beneath Nexus, the one all six other systems connected to. The ground shook, windows rattled in every nearby building, and the ancient roads lit up as mana surged through the channels beneath the city. The seven systems connected one after another, and seven enormous beams of light rose into the sky.
Starbreaker displayed new information.
SEVEN ANCIENT SYSTEMS.
NETWORK STATUS: ACTIVE.
FUNCTIONS IDENTIFIED.
The functions appeared one at a time, observation, creation, memory, death, transit, and warning. Kai waited for the seventh.
CONTROL.
Nobody spoke.
Lily slowly lowered her scanner. "Control."
Sera frowned. "Control what?"
"I don’t know."
"Maybe the network itself," Gabriel said, looking at the seven structures.
Kai didn’t answer, because he was thinking. These seven ruins weren’t random, and they weren’t separate facilities. They were seven parts of one system, and the network had just brought all of them online at once.
Starbreaker projected a circular map into the air, with seven points joined by lines in a massive pattern around the city.
"That’s the whole inner network," Lily said.
Kai nodded. "But why activate it now?"
No one had an answer.
Then the map changed, and the seven markers began to rotate. All seven systems were turning toward the same direction. The observatory’s great lens stopped pointing at the sky and slowly swung west, then north, and then back toward the center of Nexus. The forge’s massive arms shifted, the Archive changed its orientation, the pillars in the western district turned, the gate stopped spinning, and even the inscriptions seemed to realign. Deep beneath the city, the central structure redirected its energy, and every one of them was now pointed at a single place, the observatory.
Lily stared at the map. "Why are they all pointing there?"
Kai looked at the observatory, then at Starbreaker, and the relic displayed a single line.
PRIMARY NODE IDENTIFIED.
Kai’s eyes narrowed. "The observatory isn’t just one of the seven."
Gabriel looked at him. "Then what is it?"
Kai watched the observatory pulse with light. "I think it’s the beginning."
Sera crossed her arms. "The beginning of what?"
Kai shook his head. "I don’t know."
A deep sound rolled across the city, and something at the base of the observatory began to open. Massive stone doors separated, revealing a staircase that descended into darkness. Ancient lights appeared along the steps, one, two, three, and then hundreds, until the entire staircase was lit, and something was waiting at the bottom.
Starbreaker reacted violently, and for the first time since Kai had found it, it displayed a warning.
PRIMARY SYSTEM ACCESS.
ANCIENT AUTHORITY DETECTED.
RECOGNITION REQUIRED.
Kai stared at the message.
Sera stepped up beside him. "Looks like we’re going back underground."
"Looks like it," Kai said.
Lily was already moving. "Finally."
Gabriel sighed. "Aren’t you going to ask what we’re walking into?"
Lily stopped and looked back. "No."
Gabriel raised an eyebrow. "Why not?"
Lily smiled. "Because we’re definitely going to find out."
Sera laughed.
Kai looked at the observatory. The seven ruins inside the city had awakened, and whatever this inner network was preparing for, the answer seemed to be waiting beneath it.
He tightened his grip on Starbreaker. "Let’s go."
The lights inside the observatory turned blue, and the ancient door opened wider.
