My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 418: The Alliance
The first problem with building an alliance was that nobody agreed on what should be shared.
Kai discovered this less than an hour after Nexus’s government called an emergency meeting.
The conference room was packed with representatives from the Nexus government, the Hunter Association, and the Astral Church. Researchers and engineers occupied the seats along the walls, while the central display showed the ancient network beneath the city.
A government official pointed toward the map.
"We are being asked to provide Mythal with information about our ancient infrastructure, including the locations of undiscovered ruins and the capabilities of the central network. We cannot treat that information as ordinary research data."
Elden appeared on a secondary screen.
"I’m not asking for unrestricted access to your infrastructure. I need enough information to determine whether our defensive systems can safely cooperate."
"And what happens if Mythal discovers a way to control the network before Nexus does?"
Raze folded his arms behind Elden.
"Then we’d have discovered something useful. Why would we hide it from the people trying to keep our cities alive?"
"Because cooperation does not eliminate competing interests."
Mira touched Raze’s arm before he could respond.
"Let him finish. We need to understand the concern before we can address it."
The official continued.
"Nexus has spent generations studying these ruins. We cannot simply hand over everything we’ve uncovered because an unidentified signal has appeared."
Gabriel placed several documents on the table.
"The Church has preserved historical records for centuries. We understand the need to protect valuable information, but we also know what happens when people withhold knowledge during a crisis."
She displayed the records from Aegis.
"Those people had walls, weapons, armies, and researchers. Their defenses worked, yet their own records show that separate groups failed to share what they knew. Their civilization still fell."
The room grew quiet.
"We don’t need to surrender every archive," Gabriel continued. "But information we refuse to share today could become the reason we fail tomorrow."
Kai brought up a proposed framework.
"Nexus will retain control of its infrastructure, and Mythal will retain control of its own. We share the information required for defense, establish controlled access to relevant network data, and coordinate emergency procedures. Neither city gets unrestricted control over the other’s resources."
The official studied the proposal.
"And if Mythal discovers something Nexus needs?"
"We share the relevant findings through the agreed channels. We don’t hand over everything blindly, and we don’t withhold information that could save lives simply because it belongs to us."
Kai looked around the room.
"This isn’t about deciding which city leads the other. It’s about making sure both cities can respond when we learn what we’re facing."
The discussion continued for another twenty minutes. The disagreements gradually shifted from whether the alliance should exist to how it should function.
That was progress.
But an agreement on paper meant very little if the people involved couldn’t work together.
"Before we finalize anything," Kai said, "I want a practical exercise. We need to find out whether our systems can actually cooperate."
The Hunter Association commander nodded.
"What kind of scenario?"
"A district emergency involving infrastructure failure, an evacuation, and an unexpected change in conditions. Something that forces every organization to act."
Nobody objected.
They would soon wish they had.
...
The exercise began in a secured operations center near the Hunter Association headquarters.
Nexus’s emergency administration provided a simulated district emergency. The scenario included a damaged transportation corridor, a failing mana relay, and a residential block that needed evacuation.
The government received evacuation data and shelter capacities. The Hunter Association received simulated hazard locations and deployment orders. The Church coordinated medical support, while the engineers monitored infrastructure through the ancient network’s limited observation functions.
Elden’s team connected Mythal’s isolated diagnostic interface to the exercise.
Kai watched from the central control station as the simulation began.
"Start."
SIMULATED EMERGENCY: DISTRICT SEVEN
MANA RELAY FAILURE DETECTED
The government coordinator assigned evacuation teams to designated routes. The Hunter Association dispatched a response unit toward the damaged relay, and the Church prepared medical personnel.
For the first minute, everything worked.
Then the ancient network identified a secondary passage beneath the affected district.
Lily leaned toward her console.
"The network has found an alternate route. It’s shorter than the modern road system."
Aren compared the route with the physical surveys.
"The passage exists, but we haven’t confirmed its condition. The map shows a connection, not whether the tunnel is safe."
The engineers marked the route as unverified. The Hunter commander kept his team on the original route, while the government coordinator adjusted the evacuation schedule.
It was slower, but safe.
Then a new warning appeared.
UNREGISTERED ENERGY SIGNATURE DETECTED
Lily frowned.
"That isn’t part of the simulation."
The warning flashed again, this time accompanied by a reading from a real monitoring station beneath the district.
Aren stepped closer.
"That’s coming from the actual transit infrastructure. Something just activated underground."
Before anyone could respond, the lights flickered.
The ancient network’s seven rings illuminated across the central display. A new signal surged through the map, originating from a sealed structure beneath District Seven.
ANCIENT DEFENSE SYSTEM... ACTIVE
UNAUTHORIZED PRESENCE DETECTED
CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL INITIATED
Kai’s expression hardened.
"Stop the exercise. Switch to live emergency procedures."
The room erupted into activity.
A real alarm sounded across the operations center.
The first report came less than a minute later.
A maintenance crew working near an underground mana relay had discovered an ancient construct inside a sealed passage. Before they could withdraw, the structure had awakened and blocked their exit.
The next report was worse.
The construct had struck the relay, cutting power to a nearby transit station and trapping several hundred commuters behind emergency barriers.
The Hunter commander immediately requested deployment authorization.
"Confirmed hostile construct. Unknown capabilities. We need a response team underground now."
"Send the nearest unit, but don’t enter the passage until we have a route and a clear evacuation plan," Kai ordered.
The government coordinator began rerouting transit traffic and directing civilians toward alternative exits. The Church dispatched medical teams to the station entrances, while its communication staff contacted the trapped maintenance crew.
Aren studied the ancient map.
"The construct is near the same passage the network identified during the exercise. It may be responding to the network’s activation."
"Can you find a way around it?" Sera asked.
"Possibly. There’s an older service corridor running parallel to the transit tunnel, but I can’t confirm whether the entire route is open."
Lily examined the construct’s energy readings.
"The network is classifying it as a defensive unit, not an invading creature. Its containment protocol may have mistaken the modern maintenance crew for unauthorized intruders."
"Can we stop the protocol?" Kai asked.
"Not from here. The control commands are being rejected."
The ancient network had awakened a defense system that nobody understood, and the modern city had no direct control over it.
Kai turned toward the Hunter commander.
"Prepare two teams. One will secure the transit station and evacuate civilians. The other will approach the construct through the verified section of the service corridor. Nobody advances beyond the confirmed route until Aren’s team clears the next section."
The commander relayed the orders.
For once, nobody waited for another department to make the first move.
The government redirected traffic. The Church established a medical staging area. Engineers worked to isolate the damaged relay, while Lily and Aren tracked the construct’s position through the ancient network.
Then the construct moved.
Its signal surged through the display, and the surrounding energy readings spiked.
"The relay is taking another hit!" Lily warned.
The station’s emergency lights went dark.
A new report appeared. The construct had damaged a second power conduit, threatening the ventilation systems in the underground station.
Sera looked toward Kai.
"If the ventilation fails, the trapped passengers won’t have much time."
Kai nodded.
"Tell the response team to prioritize the relay and ventilation systems. The construct comes second unless it directly blocks the rescue."
That changed the operation.
The Hunters stopped treating the mission as a simple elimination and began protecting the route the engineers needed to reach the damaged systems. One team secured the station entrance, while the other advanced through the service corridor.
Aren guided them around an unstable section of tunnel. Lily provided updates on the construct’s movement, and the engineers isolated the damaged conduit before the entire system failed.
When the construct finally emerged into the service passage, the Hunters were ready.
It was a tall, armored machine with a featureless head and a blue core buried in its chest. Its movements were heavy but precise. When the first Hunter approached, it raised an arm and released a pulse of energy that threw him against the wall.
The team withdrew before the construct could strike again.
"It’s protecting the relay chamber," the commander reported. "It isn’t pursuing us beyond the passage."
"Then don’t draw it toward the station," Kai replied. "Hold its position while the engineers restore the ventilation. We can deal with the construct once the civilians are safe."
The Hunters adjusted their formation, keeping the construct away from the damaged conduit. The engineers restored emergency power, and the Church began guiding the trapped commuters toward the safe exits.
The operation was far from clean, but it was working.
Within minutes, the station’s ventilation returned, the maintenance crew was rescued, and the last civilians were moved out of the affected section.
Only then did the Hunters begin forcing the construct back toward its chamber.
Its energy core flickered as the ancient network’s control signals changed. Lily noticed the fluctuation and immediately relayed the information.
"It’s losing power when the network redirects energy away from the containment protocol!"
The engineers confirmed the reading. By isolating the damaged relay and interrupting the construct’s access to the local power channel, they reduced its output enough for the Hunters to disable its movement.
The machine collapsed in the passage.
No one cheered.
They had rescued the civilians, but an ancient defense system had awakened beneath a modern city during what was supposed to be a controlled exercise.
The unknown signal had not reached the planet yet.
And Nexus was already dealing with something its own technology could not control.
The operations center fell quiet as the final reports arrived.
No civilians had been killed, but several people were injured during the evacuation. The transit station remained closed, and the damaged relay would require a full inspection before it could be restored.
The exercise had exposed a real danger.
Mira’s voice came through the communication channel.
"How many people were affected?"
Gabriel gave her the confirmed numbers and explained which medical teams were still working at the station.
Mira immediately began arranging additional supplies and support personnel from Mythal.
"Send the medical inventory and shelter requirements to our administration. We’ll prepare what Nexus needs, but we won’t dispatch anything until the route and destination are confirmed."
Elden was already examining the construct’s energy signature.
"The ancient network treated the maintenance crew as unauthorized intruders. Its defensive protocol may have been dormant for centuries, and our activation could have triggered it."
"Could this happen at other sites?" Kai asked.
"Yes. We don’t know how many dormant defense systems remain connected to the network, or what conditions might activate them."
Lily looked troubled.
"So activating the network could make our situation worse even before the signal arrives."
"It’s a possibility," Elden replied. "Which is why we need to understand the systems before connecting them to anything else."
Kai looked toward the damaged section of the map.
The alliance had just experienced the exact problem it was meant to prevent. Different teams had possessed the necessary information and capabilities, but only coordination had allowed them to rescue the civilians before the situation deteriorated further.
The incident also revealed a new threat within Nexus itself.
The ancient network was not simply a collection of useful ruins. Some of its systems were still capable of acting on their own, and their original purpose did not necessarily align with the needs of modern inhabitants.
"We need a shared procedure for ancient system activations," Kai said. "Any unexpected activation must be reported immediately. No one attempts to control a dormant system without technical assessment, and no route is considered safe until it has been verified."
The Hunter commander agreed.
"The Association will establish response teams trained to secure affected areas while researchers assess the system. We’ll also update our deployment rules so the first response doesn’t depend on one person having all the information."
Gabriel nodded.
"The Church will coordinate medical support and preserve the construct’s records. We need to determine what triggered its activation and whether the same conditions exist elsewhere."
The government representative looked toward the damaged relay on the display.
"And Nexus will inspect the affected infrastructure, prepare alternative evacuation routes, and ensure that the city’s essential services can continue operating if another ancient system activates."
Kai turned toward Elden’s screen.
"Mythal will help analyze the network, but the isolated interface stays isolated until we understand the risks."
"Agreed," Elden replied. "I’ll begin with the construct’s energy signature and the network commands that activated it."
Raze leaned into the camera.
"And I’ll make sure our deployment force is ready if Nexus needs support."
This time, Kai did not tell him to wait.
"Prepare the force. We’ll determine when and where to deploy it based on the evidence."
Raze nodded, accepting the condition without argument.
The alliance agreement was finalized that afternoon. Each organization signed on to its responsibilities, the shared communication procedures, and the rules governing emergency coordination.
It was no longer simply an agreement to help one another.
It was a system designed to make that help work under pressure.
Kai looked at the ancient network map one final time. The seven sites remained synchronized, but the newly awakened construct had added another warning to their growing list of concerns.
Aegis had failed because its people fought beside one another without truly acting together.
Nexus and Mythal had taken the first step toward avoiding the same mistake.
But the threat beneath District Seven had proved that cooperation alone would not solve every problem. They still needed to understand the ancient systems they were awakening, and they still had an unknown signal approaching from beyond the world.
The next challenge was clear.
They had to make the ancient and modern systems work together... before either one became another danger they could not control.
