My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 423: Calamity
The tower fired.
A blue beam tore through the sky above Nexus, so bright that people across the avenue covered their eyes. It left a glowing line suspended in the air, stretching from one end of the city to the other.
For half a second, nothing happened.
Then every window along the surrounding street shattered.
Glass rained onto the pavement. Car alarms screamed, and people ducked behind parked vehicles as nearby ancient towers turned toward the same empty patch of sky.
Kai looked up.
The beam had not struck anything visible.
"Everyone, get away from the windows!" Sera shouted.
Her warning had barely left her mouth when the tower fired again.
This time, the beam changed direction.
It struck an ancient structure rising above the rooftops several streets away. The impact split the structure down the middle, and its upper section tilted toward a crowded avenue.
Stone and metal groaned as the enormous piece began to fall.
Kai moved.
He crossed the distance in a blur, reaching the avenue just as people began screaming and running in every direction.
"Clear the street!" Sera shouted. "Get everyone away from the falling structure! Don’t gather in the intersections!"
The Hunters nearby reacted immediately. Some rushed toward the civilians, while others formed a line to keep people from running beneath the collapsing structure.
A delivery driver abandoned his vehicle and pulled an elderly man away from the curb. A woman stumbled while carrying a small child, and a Hunter caught her before she hit the ground.
Above them, the structure continued to fall.
Kai raised his hand.
His power struck the largest section of the collapsing mass, breaking it apart before it could crush the avenue. The enormous slab split into several pieces. Most of the debris crashed into abandoned vehicles and storefronts, while smaller fragments scattered across the road.
The impact shook the surrounding buildings.
Dust swallowed the street.
Kai landed among the wreckage, his eyes moving across the damaged avenue. The largest threat was gone, but several people had been caught by the smaller debris. Hunters were already pulling them free.
"Medical teams to the avenue!" Sera called through her communicator. "We have multiple injuries. Keep the western entrance clear for the rescue crews!"
A young Hunter approached her, breathing hard.
"Captain, the tower is still active. Should we move in and destroy it?"
"No. We don’t know what it will do if we attack it." Sera pointed toward the nearest shelter entrance. "Get those people inside first. Then report every change you see."
The Hunter nodded and ran.
Kai watched the rescue teams work for a moment. They were moving, communicating, and helping the injured without waiting for him to tell them what to do.
Their preparations had mattered.
But the damaged buildings and blood on the pavement made one thing clear.
They had prepared for an emergency.
They had not prepared for this.
...
A notification appeared before Kai could return to the others.
[CALAMITY DETECTED.]
Kai stared at the message.
He waited.
No conditions appeared. No countdown began. There was no objective, no list of enemies, and no explanation of what the System had detected.
Nothing followed.
"Kai?"
Sera approached, brushing dust from her sleeve. Her expression tightened when she saw him looking at the empty space before him.
"Did the System tell you anything?"
"Only that a calamity has been detected."
"What kind?"
"It didn’t say."
Sera looked toward the towers. Another ancient weapon began to glow, forcing her to shield her eyes.
"So we’re dealing with something the System can’t explain?"
"Or something it isn’t going to explain."
Kai lowered his hand.
"Either way, we can’t wait for instructions."
He looked across Nexus. Blue lights were appearing throughout the city as ancient structures activated one after another. Some rose from beneath the streets. Others unfolded above the rooftops, revealing weapons and mechanisms that had remained hidden for centuries.
"This isn’t a trial," he said.
Sera followed his gaze.
"No rules. No conditions. No idea when it ends."
"Exactly."
She tightened her grip on her weapon.
"Then we make our own rules. Protect the civilians, keep our teams connected, and don’t attack anything until we understand what it’s doing."
Kai gave her a brief nod.
"Tell the others."
Before she could respond, another explosion shook the distant streets.
They turned toward the sound.
Aren and Lily were standing near a damaged observation platform, studying the ancient network through the readings Starbreaker had shared with their equipment.
Aren watched as two towers rotated toward each other.
"That shouldn’t be happening," he muttered.
Lily barely looked up from her display.
"You’ve said that four times."
"And the network has done something worse every time."
"Five times now."
Aren gave her a disbelieving look.
"Are you seriously counting?"
"It helps me keep track of how often you’re surprised."
"I’m surprised because ancient weapons aren’t supposed to attack their own structures!"
Lily’s expression grew serious.
"Then stop looking at the weapons. Look at what they’re targeting."
She enlarged the readings.
The towers were responding to several points in the sky. Their targeting systems were shifting between them, while ancient barriers activated around structures that had not been attacked.
One tower fired at a nearby structure.
Another immediately turned toward the first.
Aren’s expression changed.
"It’s treating the other tower as a threat."
"Or its targeting system is receiving incorrect information," Lily replied. "Either way, these defenses aren’t coordinating properly."
Aren looked toward the damaged observation platform.
"We need to reach the control systems. If we can understand their commands, we might be able to stop them."
"Not yet. We don’t even know whether they’re following commands or reacting to something."
A distant tower fired again.
This time, the beam struck empty air.
The space above a nearby plaza twisted.
Lily’s display flashed red.
"Aren, move!"
The ground beneath them shook as a dimensional fracture opened above the plaza. The buildings behind it stretched toward an impossible point, their shapes bending as if the entire street had been reflected through a broken mirror.
Paving stones lifted from the ground.
Cars slid toward the opening, scraping across the pavement. People clung to railings and lamp posts as the air itself seemed to pull them forward.
Then something pushed through the fracture.
Aren froze for a fraction of a second.
The creature had four long limbs and a body covered in dark plates. Its head was narrow, with no visible eyes. Blue light pulsed beneath its armor, matching the glow of the ancient towers.
It dropped onto the plaza.
The moment its feet touched the ground, it lunged at the nearest moving figure.
A man trying to escape was thrown through a storefront window.
"Get everyone out!" Aren shouted.
He rushed forward, intercepting the creature before it could reach another group of civilians. His attack struck its side, forcing it away from the crowd.
The creature twisted unnaturally.
Aren’s next strike passed beside its body, even though his aim had been correct.
"What?"
The creature struck back.
Aren barely raised his weapon in time. The impact drove him across the plaza, his boots scraping against the stone.
Lily watched the readings spike.
"The space around it is changing!"
"Could you be more specific?"
"I’m trying!"
The creature charged again.
Aren rolled aside as its claws tore through the ground. The stone beneath them stretched toward the fracture, and the creature seemed to slide across a distance that should have taken several steps to cross.
Aren cursed under his breath.
He had explored dozens of ancient ruins. He had faced relic guardians, automated defenses, and creatures awakened by dormant systems.
He had never fought something that made distance itself unreliable.
"Kai!" Lily shouted into her communicator. "We have a creature emerging from a dimensional fracture in the plaza. Its movement is being distorted by the opening!"
Kai was already moving.
...
Kai reached the plaza moments later, with Sera close behind him.
Aren was retreating toward an open section of the street, trying to draw the creature away from the civilians. Several Hunters were helping people escape through a side passage, while others struggled to keep the damaged storefronts from collapsing.
"Status?" Kai asked.
"It’s fast, difficult to hit, and apparently doesn’t appreciate being stabbed," Aren replied, breathing hard.
Sera glanced at the deep grooves in the pavement.
"Did you try asking it nicely?"
"I was saving that for my next attempt."
The creature lunged again.
Kai intercepted it, striking its armored body. His attack connected, but the creature’s outline shifted at the moment of impact. The force sent it tumbling across the plaza, yet it recovered almost immediately.
Sera attacked from the opposite side.
Her strike caught one of its limbs and damaged the armor. The creature staggered, then twisted toward her with startling speed.
Kai forced it back before it could reach her.
"Don’t let it get close to the fracture," Lily called from behind them.
Kai glanced at her.
"Why?"
"The opening changes whenever the nearby tower fires. Its position shifts with the distortion. When the creature is near it, the distortion makes its movements harder to predict."
"So we pull it away from the tower."
"Exactly!"
Kai nodded toward Sera.
"Draw it toward the western side."
She understood immediately.
Sera moved first, striking the creature’s damaged limb before retreating toward the open street. The creature followed her, abandoning the fracture as it pursued the nearest target.
Kai stayed between them, forcing the creature to turn whenever it tried to change direction.
This time, its movements were easier to follow.
Aren noticed the difference.
"That’s it! Keep it away from the opening!"
He moved to block the creature’s escape route, leaving Sera a clear angle.
She took it.
Her next strike drove through the damaged armor, and Kai followed with a powerful blow that sent the creature crashing onto the pavement.
The blue light beneath its plates flickered.
Then it went dark.
The creature stopped moving.
For one brief moment, the plaza fell quiet.
Sera lowered her weapon and released a breath.
"Please tell me that’s the end of it."
Aren approached cautiously.
"If it gets back up, I’m leaving."
"You’d leave us behind?"
"I’d leave with great speed."
Kai ignored their exchange and looked toward Lily.
"Did the fracture change?"
Lily stared at her display.
Her face had gone pale.
"No."
Kai looked back at the opening.
It remained suspended above the plaza, bending the buildings behind it into impossible shapes.
The creature was dead.
The fracture was still open.
Then the blue light inside the creature’s body flashed once.
The opening widened.
A wave of force swept across the plaza, throwing dust and loose debris into the air. Kai planted his feet while Sera grabbed a nearby railing. Aren stumbled backward, catching himself against a damaged wall.
Something moved on the other side of the fracture.
Not one creature.
Something much larger.
Lily’s display began filling with warnings.
"Kai, the opening is expanding toward the second tower!"
He looked up.
The fracture was stretching across the sky, its edge creeping toward another ancient structure rising above the rooftops.
"If it reaches that tower," Lily continued, "the two systems might connect. I don’t know what happens if they do."
Kai watched the space between the fracture and the tower grow smaller.
"Can you close it?"
"Not with anything we’ve discovered so far!"
Another pulse rolled through the plaza.
The fracture widened again.
This time, a huge shape pressed against its other side.
Kai raised his weapon.
"Everyone, fall back. Keep the civilians moving, and don’t let anyone approach the opening."
Sera immediately began directing the Hunters toward the evacuation route. Aren joined her, helping the injured reach safety while keeping his eyes on the fracture.
Lily continued tracking its expansion, searching for anything that might explain how to stop it.
Above them, the second tower began to glow.
And something on the other side of the fracture started pushing its way through.
