Chapter 64
"What the... " Liyu’s mind was stunned for a moment as he felt the dark blade rushing toward his neck; however, he didn’t panic, for his speed was far too great for him to be caught off guard by something like this.
He slid one leg backward and bent his body ever so slightly, allowing the blade to slide right past his head, and without hesitation, Liyu kicked toward the attacker.
His leg collided heavily with the chin of Li Feng, sending the young man crashing into the side of a nearby tree. Yet Li Feng didn’t stay down; instead, he used the tree to quickly regain his footing before charging forward once more.
Wait... he was being attacked by Li Feng? Why had that bastard of a cousin suddenly decided to kill him? And wasn’t Li Yuexin and the rest supposed to stop him?
Yet before he could even finish that thought, he sensed another, even greater danger approaching from behind.
Liyu turned swiftly, his claws elongated instinctively, ready to strike whoever was assisting Li Feng in trying to kill him, yet he wasn’t prepared for what he saw.
The face that greeted him was that of a beautiful young woman... clear sky-blue eyes, flowing hair, and a gleaming blue sword slicing through the air as it headed straight for his shoulder.
Wait, she was attacking him too? Liyu’s mind was completely stunned; just what in the world was going on here?
Still, he didn’t allow Yuexin’s sword to hit him; he managed to block the strike before quickly retreating away from the duo, only to be met by another pair from the side.
Li Xie attacked with his sword, and Li Jie followed with his rapier. Liyu’s face couldn’t help but twitch at that moment.
He managed to dodge all of the attacks, but he genuinely couldn’t understand what he had done wrong for all of these people to suddenly want to kill him. Heck, even Yuexin was trying to kill him.
Wait a minute... he had only just returned to his body, which meant the one who must have started all of this was undoubtedly... Liyu’s face twitched violently.
That stupid clone! What exactly had that fool done to make everyone want to murder him? He genuinely wanted to know.
"Hey guys, what are you doing? Do you really want to kill me now?" Liyu asked in a baffled voice, trying to reason with them. "Shut up! You can’t trick us!" Li Jie shouted immediately.
"No matter what kind of abomination you are, you can’t fool us into believing you’re Brother Yu!" A bead of sweat rolled down the side of Li Jie’s face; the reason was simple: this imposter was terrifyingly powerful.
They had been trying to capture him for more than twenty minutes already, and yet none of them had succeeded. His strength, his speed, his reactions, his combat skills, the way he fought with that silver dagger... everything about him screamed professional warrior.
And that only made things far worse. After all, they had Li Yuexin, the Battle Princess, with them, yet even she hadn’t been able to suppress the imposter. Li Xie didn’t want to admit it, but it almost seemed as if the imposter was even more skilled than Yuexin herself.
And yet this bastard continued walking around with the appearance and cultivation of Brother Yu, expecting them to believe he hadn’t done anything to the real one. Liyu raised an eyebrow.
An imposter? Hadn’t he literally told them before that he wasn’t the original Liyu in one sense? It was their fault for refusing to believe him, so why were they suddenly calling him an imposter now?
His head genuinely couldn’t wrap around what was happening. Yet before Liyu could ask any questions, Li Yuexin spoke, her tone cold.
"Where is Brother Yu?" Her blue eyes locked onto him. "You did something to him after you separated from us, didn’t you?" She tightened her grip on her sword.
"Abomination. I’ll give you one chance: explain yourself and return Brother Yu, or I will stop holding back and show you no mercy." Liyu’s eyes twitched. Why did he suddenly have a very bad feeling about this?
And what exactly did she mean by abomination? Something flashed through his mind... a spark of realization. He had left the group, and King Rayden had taken over afterward, which meant whatever happened between then and now was entirely that idiot’s fault.
"Listen, guys! It really is me!" Liyu shouted. "Come on! It’s really me! I’ve been traveling with you guys this whole day and yet you can’t recognize me?" Li Yuexin’s eyes trembled slightly.
For a brief moment, she felt as though Liyu had truly returned, yet she couldn’t be certain, so she spoke: "If you’re really Brother Yu and not the imposter... then why did you say you had no idea who I was?
Why did you compliment Brother Feng’s calm demeanor?" Her face became increasingly strange. "Something everybody knows you would never do."
She continued listing examples one after another, meanwhile, Liyu’s expression gradually turned solemn. That bastard King Rayden had truly screwed everything up.
He knew the fool would cause trouble, but wasn’t this a little too much trouble? There was absolutely no way in hell he would ever compliment Li Feng... not even if that bastard somehow saved the world from destruction itself.
"Listen, guys. I know this sounds crazy, but the person before wasn’t me. But right now I’m ba.. " He didn’t even get to finish; Li Feng’s sword swept toward his neck once more.
"Shut up, imposter!" Of course, Liyu dodged the attack effortlessly, yet Li Jie, Li Xie, and Li Yuexin all attacked immediately afterward. Liyu frowned; if he chose to fight back seriously, he wasn’t certain he could perfectly control his strength, and if he failed... he might seriously injure one of them.
So instead of fighting... he ran. And naturally... they chased. As Liyu sprinted through the forest, he quickly established a mental connection with his clone.
The moment the connection formed, the very first thing he said was: "Hey, fool. You have three minutes to explain this madness you’ve caused." King Rayden remained silent for a few moments, then he replied: "I honestly don’t know what I did wrong.
I simply answered their questions honestly, and then they suddenly decided I was an imposter and tried to subdue me. I genuinely don’t know what I did wrong." "Shut up and explain what happened."
Liyu’s tone was utterly merciless. King Rayden sighed, then he finally agreed: "Fine. I’ll start from the beginning. It seems the group quickly noticed that the way I carried myself was slightly different from before, so they decided to ask me a few questions in order to test whether I was really you."
Liyu already felt a headache coming. "And then?" he asked. There was a brief pause, then King Rayden spoke again: "And then... they asked me questions. I answered them. And apparently... they didn’t like the answers." Liyu’s eye twitched.
"Be specific." Another pause before King Rayden finally admitted: "...I may have failed the test." "Failed?" Liyu asked. "How badly?" King Rayden went silent for several long seconds, then he finally answered: "Spectacularly."
Liyu nearly tripped while running. That basterd... Like seriously, why would Li Yuexin ask him the name of the person who made her carved toy, and he would respond with, "I have no idea"?
Why the hell would he say that Li Feng’s aura was calm and worthy of being a king? And why would he go around saying things like, "This body is really not comfortable," and many other suspicious statements that were more than enough to get him hunted down?
"You bastard!" Liyu cursed inwardly as he dodged the two rapiers that Li Jie threw at him; the weapons were enhanced by qi and buried themselves deeply into the side of a tree.
Liyu twisted his body and let out a small sigh. "I guess I will have to prove that I am Liyu then." He looked toward Li Feng and shook his head. "Hey, dumb dud, you do know that swinging your sword like that only makes you look like a joke, right?"
Li Feng frowned slightly. Dumb dud. That was the nickname Liyu himself had given him. A flicker crossed Li Feng’s eyes; it seemed he was telling the truth.
At that exact moment, Li Xie’s sword shot toward Liyu’s abdomen; Liyu dodged the strike and caught Li Xie by the wrist. "Granny would be very mad if she learned that you wanted to kill a fellow clansman. Heck, not just anyone, but Granny’s favorite heir."
Liyu raised an eyebrow. "Do you really want to make Granny sad?" Li Xie’s gaze immediately became solemn; it was Li Yu without a doubt. Nobody else would dare weaponize Granny’s favoritism so shamelessly.
"And you, Jie." Liyu turned toward the young man. "Are you really certain you don’t want to take off your expensive royal silk robe before fighting? You wouldn’t want any damage coming to it, would you?" Li Jie paused; he grabbed his rapier and blinked.
Why had he forgotten that? He immediately began checking his clothes. To his utter horror, a tiny cut, no longer than an inch, had appeared on his sleeve. Li Jie’s expression shattered; he slowly dropped to his knees.
"Nooooo!" His miserable scream echoed through the forest. "That one is taken care of as well." Liyu’s body tingled with warning; he dodged the blue sword that came for him once more.
His leg swept out and struck the attacker’s leg; the attacker slid backward and nearly fell from the tree. Yet before she could fall, Liyu grabbed her shoulder. The attacker was naturally none other than Li Yuexin.
She stared directly into his eyes; there was uncertainty there, worry too. Liyu’s gaze shifted toward the carved doll hanging at her side. A small smile appeared on his face. "I see you still kept it safe." His voice softened.
"If you want, I can carve you another one." Hearing that, Li Yuexin felt her emotions churn violently. The blue sword slipped from her hand... CLANG! The weapon fell onto the branch beneath them.
The next moment she rolled out of Liyu’s grasp and hugged him tightly. "You are back..." Her voice trembled slightly. "I was so, so worried... I thought you were taking over by an abomination" Liyu couldn’t help but smile; he gently patted her back. "Who knows? I might have actually been taken over by one bastard king instead."
His eyes narrowed slightly. "Don’t worry. I’ll thrash that bastard soon." The hug lasted much longer than Liyu found comfortable, still, he didn’t push her away; instead, he simply let out a small sigh of relief. Everything had finally been resolved.
At that moment, the voice of his clone entered his mind. "Why?" That was the very first thing King Rayden said. "Why must you always go on a bloody onslaught?" His tone was filled with annoyance.
"And now you have dyed my robes with blood and gore." A pause. "I will have to spend the entire night cleaning them."
King Rayden sounded genuinely offended; unlike Liyu’s outfit, which could clean itself automatically, King Rayden’s royal robes actually needed proper maintenance. "So annoying."
Liyu’s expression darkened. "You know what?" His tone turned cold enough to freeze a river. "Just pray my mood settles before I see you tomorrow. Because if it doesn’t... You’ll take far more care of you than your precious robe."
King Rayden felt a slight shiver run down his spine; without another word, he immediately cut the mental connection. Liyu sighed... finally, he could get some rest.
The entire night had been slightly hectic, though before he could truly relax, he still had to explain why he had acted differently earlier.
Fortunately, that part wasn’t difficult. After cooking up a quick lie... a very convincing lie at that... the others immediately believed him. What could they do? The lie was simply too perfect to be called a lie. "I have to admit."
The system suddenly spoke after remaining silent for a very long time. "The host possesses remarkable talent when it comes to lying." Liyu’s eye twitched. "Hey, Sys. Just shut up and let me rest."
"Why should I?" The system immediately replied. "Because I want to rest." The system, however, had absolutely no intention of shutting up.
"You know that Paladin title you received? I would argue that you don’t deserve it." Liyu opened one eye. "Oh?"
The system continued mercilessly: "Host, if anyone saw how you massacred those innocent unlucky people back there, they would see you as a messenger of darkness, not some holy warrior."
"But you gave it to me." Liyu raised an eyebrow. "Well, not directly." The system coughed awkwardly. "Once the host fulfills certain conditions, rewards are granted automatically. It’s not like I personally decide what to give you whenever I want."
Liyu slowly closed his eyes. "Alright. I understand." A pause. "Now please keep quiet and let me sleep." The system remained silent for a moment, then...
"That move you pulled back there seemed very romantic, Host." Liyu’s eye opened instantly. "Don’t tell me you’ve been watching romance dramas as well?" Liyu suddenly felt like cursing the system. "
Sys." His voice became dangerously calm. "Please. Shut up. And let me rest." The system did not shut up, not even slightly.
At that moment, Liyu genuinely questioned his life choices; wasn’t this damn thing supposed to come with a power-off button, or at least a mute function?
No, instead, this system was absolutely insufferable. Thankfully, after several more minutes of nonstop nonsense, the system finally allowed him to sleep.
Soon, the night passed, and the sun rose. After making a few preparations, the group set out once more. Not long afterward, they finally broke free from the Beast Forest.
Two hours of heavy running later, they arrived before Urgrat City, the closest human settlement to the Beast Forest.
The moment Liyu stepped through the city gates... the news spread like wildfire. The failed heir of the Li Clan had returned, and within a single day, the entirety of the Night Region knew about it.
