Chapter 63: Arranging a Job

Chapter 63: Chapter 63: Arranging a Job

After a few drinks, there’s always a need for some... exercise. If you know, you know!

Perhaps it was the alcohol, but after a moment, he realized what he was doing and asked with tender concern, "Are you mad at me for being like this?"

She closed her eyes and said, "It’s fine!"

This only spurred Chen Xiao on, and he got even more carried away. "Even when I wear you out like this, you don’t get mad?"

"Mmm, I’m yours. All yours..."

In that instant, he transformed into the hero of Changban Slope...

「The next day, Saturday morning.」

People who drink too much tend to wake up early. When he sat up and felt the empty space beside him, she was gone.

He glanced at the time—it was only 6:30 AM. He got up and went into the living room, where he found her in the kitchen making porridge.

"Why are you up so early? It’s the weekend, you don’t have to work!"

"Buddy, you might not have work, but I do! I’m in sales!"

It was only then that it dawned on Chen Xiao. His mindset had truly changed; he’d started treating work as a source of fun, so he’d become fuzzy on the details of the work week. Besides, it’s not like anyone was checking his attendance.

As she spoke, she came out of the kitchen, and Chen Xiao noticed the exhaustion on her face.

He quickly asked, "Did you not sleep well last night?"

She rolled her eyes at him. "How was I supposed to sleep with you being so energetic?"

Chen Xiao chuckled happily. He knew that wasn’t the only reason, though. It wasn’t like his high energy was a new thing, and she usually slept just fine.

Last night, it must have been the smell of alcohol on his breath that kept her awake; she was very sensitive to smells like that.

Today was the day Chen Xiao’s parents were coming to meet his girlfriend. They were scheduled to arrive in the evening, so the plan was for Zhao Xiangjun to work her normal morning shift and then take the afternoon off.

She told Chen Xiao to stay home and get some more sleep. Nothing’s sweeter than sleeping in until the sun is high in the sky!

He was still hungover and had a bit of a headache. ’Mom and Dad aren’t arriving until evening anyway,’ he thought, so he decided to go back to sleep.

He tried to persuade Zhao Xiangjun not to go in today. What was the big deal if a major shareholder skipped a day of work? His suggestion earned him another eye-roll.

She said, "If you’re going to do something, do it right! What major shareholder? That feels like a dream. I don’t deserve it!"

’There she goes again,’ he thought. ’With me around, what don’t you deserve?’ He knew it was her catchphrase, so he couldn’t be bothered to argue.

He then asked about her parents’ visit the day before, and she recounted the events for him.

When he heard her parents had come to Bihu Twin Seals, Chen Xiao laughed. "If I’d known, I would’ve stayed home and waited for them yesterday!"

"Forget it. The apartment alone was enough to give them a scare. If you’d been here when they arrived, I’m afraid they would’ve been scared sick!"

He roared with laughter and told her to arrange a time for them to go visit her parents together.

She told Chen Xiao about her brother, Zhao Hui, explaining that she was planning to ask Wu Ting to arrange a job for him in the logistics department of the Yinuo Jiangzhou Branch.

The reason she was going through Wu Ting was because as a mere sales associate, the most she could do was make a recommendation, with no guarantee he’d be hired. If he were rejected, Zhao Hui’s newfound motivation might just vanish into thin air.

Chen Xiao said, "That’s some arrangement. You’re putting him in the logistics department? That’s all dirty, heavy labor, moving goods around all day. Aren’t you just making him suffer?"

She huffed. "Isn’t that what real life is like? He needs his character tempered. Besides, for many people, just finding a stable job is a blessing. Why should he be exempt from hard work? Only by enduring the bitterest hardships can one rise above the rest!"

Chen Xiao agreed with her point of view. He just felt that with their current circumstances, there was no need to make his brother-in-law suffer. But thinking back on Zhao Hui’s past behavior, he had to admit the man really did need some tempering. If he turned over a new leaf, they could arrange something else for him later.

During the morning, Zhao Xiangjun found a moment at the store to send Wu Ting a message. She gave her Zhao Hui’s information and asked her to arrange a job for him in the logistics department at the Yinuo Jiangzhou Branch.

Naturally, Wu Ting took an arrangement from Chairman Zhao very seriously. She immediately promised to oversee the matter personally and told her to have Zhao Hui report for duty on Monday morning.

A matter like this was incredibly simple for Wu Ting. Arranging a spot for someone in the logistics department wasn’t like appointing a regional president or the head of some important business division.

Seeing Zhao Hui’s name and personal information, she easily guessed he was a relative of Chairman Zhao. Eager to please, she asked if he should be placed in business development, retail, or merchandising, all of which were the most critical positions in a retail company.

Zhao Xiangjun refused on the spot. At his current level, putting Zhao Hui in an important position would be a disservice to both him and the company. She told Wu Ting to let him temper himself in logistics first. If he proved his worth, he could be trained for other positions later.

Less than half an hour later, Wu Ting sent a message saying everything was arranged. On Monday, Zhao Hui was to go directly to President Liu Haoran, and President Liu would personally take him to the logistics department to start his new role.

’Well, this seems like a bit much,’ she thought.

She sent Zhao Hui a message, telling him to go to the Yinuo Jiangzhou Branch first thing on Monday morning and find President Liu Haoran. All he had to do was introduce himself. She also sent him the branch’s address.

Zhao Hui was at home, bored and scrolling through his phone, when he received the message. He leaped up in excitement, grabbed his wife, who was cleaning, and planted a big, loud kiss on her cheek.

"Are you crazy?!"

Zhao Hui just giggled, turning to his parents, who were staring at him like he was a lunatic. "I got a message from Xiangjun! My job is all set up. I’m supposed to report in on Monday!"

Mr. and Mrs. Zhao were also thrilled. They hadn’t expected their daughter to be so efficient.

They urged Zhao Hui to cherish this rare opportunity, work hard, and make something of himself.

Chen Xiao slept until noon. He walked into the living room in his pajamas and found a note from Zhao Xiangjun.

She had made a pot of soup for him to drink when he woke up. It would be good for his stomach after drinking so much last night.

’It’s great having the lady of the house around,’ Chen Xiao thought happily as he sipped the soup. He casually sent a message to his mom, asking what time their train was so he could pick them up from the high-speed rail station.

A moment later, his mom replied. He opened the message, and the soup spoon instantly fell from his hand onto the table.

’No way! Didn’t you say you weren’t arriving until evening? How are you already in Jiangzhou? And at Wansheng Square?!’

He hurriedly dialed her number.

"Hey, Mom, why did you go to Wansheng? Didn’t you say you weren’t arriving until evening?"

"We were too eager to see our daughter-in-law! Your dad and I talked it over and took the first train this morning. We wanted to give you a surprise!"

’A shock, for sure, but where’s the ’surprise’ part in any of this?’ he thought. ’You come all the way to Jiangzhou, and instead of seeing your own son first, you run off to secretly inspect his girlfriend? What’s that about?’

He quickly sent a message to Zhao Xiangjun, telling her his parents were already at Wansheng Square and that he would wash up and head over immediately.

He was speechless. Before they came, his parents had asked about Zhao Xiangjun, and he’d told them she worked as a sales associate at the Yinuo men’s formalwear store in Wansheng Square. He’d said she was the prettiest one in the shop.

His mom had even questioned him, saying that everyone’s standards of beauty are different and that he shouldn’t throw around the word "prettiest" so lightly.

At the time, Chen Xiao had said confidently, "This is different. When you see Xiangjun, you’ll know. No matter where she is, using a word like ’prettiest’ is no exaggeration at all!"
